After everything is said and done, Paradis Island is left in rubble, serving as an old ghost town full of destroyed buildings and tall trees. However, one mysterious boy explores this land and finds the most iconic tree of them all - Eren’s tree.
The Mysterious Boy in the Post-Credit Scenes
In the mid-credit scenes of Attack on Titan, Paradis Island is modernized over time until it is ultimately destroyed several years after the finale. Later, Eren’s home appears in an unfamiliar state full of trees, tall grass, and collapsed buildings. Notably, there are no people - no local inhabitants, at least.
One mysterious boy accompanied by the man’s greatest companion - his dog - explores these lands, hoping to understand Paradis’s history and reveal its mysteries. During this exploration, the boy finds the biggest mystery of them all. He finds the very tree where Attack on Titan’s story began.
Little did he know, he would become one of the show’s most intriguing enigmas, a riddle that only Hajime Isayama can decipher. And, even though the true answer remains a mystery, fans have crafted multiple theories about the kid in Attack on Titan, some more realistic than others.
Theories About the Boy At The End | Is He Related to Mikasa or Eren?
The first theory relates this boy to one of the show’s main characters - Mikasa Ackerman. After creating a family and living a long life, Mikasa dies at the end of Attack on Titan and is laid to rest next to Eren beside the iconic tree.
Taking her family life into consideration, fans speculate that the boy could be a distant relative of Mikasa, drawing parallels due to his resemblance, characterized by his short black hair and red scarf - a resemblance that fuels the belief that he might continue Mikasa's legacy.
A similar theory proposes that the boy could either be connected to Eren or be a reincarnation of him. However, this idea is less plausible because the Paths stopped existing after Eren's death. Furthermore, Eren's lack of romantic attachments contradicts the idea of the boy being his relative.
The final theory is quite strange, linking the boy's love for dogs with the canine-like Titan glimpsed during Attack on Titan's final battle. It proposes that, after entering the tree, a new centipede-like entity transforms the kid into that Titan. Nonetheless, this idea seems very far-fetched as the only known creature of that nature disappears when Mikasa defeats Eren.
The Meaning Behind the Post-Credits
In the dystopian state Paradis is left in, the appearance of the aforementioned mysterious boy hints at a possible sequel to Attack on Titan. While he and his dog never entered the tree “on screen”, it’s likely that neither of them could resist the urge to explore this secret.
The post-credit scenes in Attack on Titan offer two understandings. If the boy finds an alien centipede in the tree, he might become the next Founding Titan, restarting the cycle of the Titans. Alternatively, if no centipede exists, Hajime Isayama may have simply included the panel to confuse fans, sparking further discussions and theories.
Final Thoughts about The Unknown Kid
At the end of Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and their comrades' story, they left their land in a state of peace - something that hadn’t been achieved for thousands of years. However, history repeated, leaving Paradis Island into yet another war - a war where, unlike before, Paradis was destroyed.
Years later, after every single building collapses, one particular tree rises above everything, showing the strength of the people who previously cherished it. Also, in all that chaos, the young boy who discovered this tree piques a lot of interest among fans, leaving the future of the series open.
While the theories of where this boy comes from may hold some truth, they still cannot be fully confirmed. The world of Attack on Titan has always been full of surprises, often turning the unexpected into reality. However, only one person knows the answer to this question, and it remains to be seen if he will ever share it with the audience.
