In the final battle of Attack on Titan, Mikasa and Eren meet for the last time in circumstances they both would never deliberately choose. They meet in the middle of a rampage that wiped out nearly all of humanity, a rampage that Mikasa puts to an end by stopping Eren for good.
What Does Mikasa’s Dream Mean?
In a brilliant display of foreshadowing that highlights Hajime Isayama's careful planning, Mikasa tells Eren that she'll see him soon. When the first episode of Attack on Titan’s final chapter was released, this moment didn't catch much attention as no one knew its meaning. However, its true significance became apparent later, particularly at the end of the series.
Just before defeating Eren, Mikasa has a dream of her and Eren living in a secluded cottage, far from civilization, a scene later explained as an alternate reality that Eren created to spend time alone with Mikasa. In this imagined scenario, the two escape the conflict between Paradis and Marley, seeking refuge in the mountains to spend Eren's final years together.
In the final moments of these alternate reality memories, Eren's remaining four years draw close to an end and Mikasa, in an intimate interaction, gently cradles his head as if preparing for a kiss. While doing so, she reassures Eren that they will meet soon, hinting at the conclusion of their relationship. Later, in a heart-wrenching parallel within the true reality, Mikasa holds Eren's head in a very similar way. Sadly, this time, it happens after she kills him to save what’s remaining of the human race.
Mikasa and Eren’s Final Moments Together
The parallels between these two realities offer a fascinating contrast in Mikasa's emotional expressions toward Eren. In the alternate reality, the events happen because Mikasa openly confesses her love for Eren, while in the actual storyline, she refrains from such a confession. Despite this difference, both narratives share very similar outcomes - Mikasa stands by Eren until his final moments, and the world suffers from the consequences of the war.
Even though she liked what she saw in those alternate memories, Mikasa - aware that there existed only one way to stop the Titan’s curse - made the selfless choice to end Eren's life. This led to one of the most highly anticipated moments in Attack on Titan - Eren and Mikasa’s first kiss that, unfortunately for every EreKasa fan, was also their last one.
The Simple Reason as to Why Mikasa Kissed Eren
In the end, the message is clear. Mikasa kissed Eren because she loved him, and she never stopped doing so. Her affection transcended the chaos of wars and the formidable powers of Titans. This love guided her to the difficult yet righteous choice to end Eren’s destruction and save the world.
There was nothing she wanted more than to live peacefully in a world where she could kiss Eren every day, but she knew that it was impossible. Her kiss was a heartfelt goodbye to Eren, and a sincere gesture of gratitude for everything he had meant to her. At that moment, it was her way of conveying love to the person who meant everything to her.
