A few of the most iconic Haki moments is when Luffy unleashes a mighty wave of Conqueror's Haki at Marineford and Fish-Man Island, knocking out hundreds of foes with his overpowering willpower. Or even Whitebeard meeting with Shanks, and how they literally split the sky with their clash of Conqueror’s Haki. Scenes like this showcase Haki as one of the most pivotal forces in the One Piece world.

Haki is a mysterious power that allows individuals to harness their spiritual energy for superhuman abilities. More than brute strength, it represents the pinnacle convergence of mental fortitude, physical vigor, and will. Haki is wielded by the strongest characters, driving the greatest battles and epic scenes in the series.

In this article, we’ll be exploring all the types of Haki and everything we know about Haki so far. We’ll also talk about some of the greatest Haki users in the series and some of the most epic moments of Haki usage.

Haki | What is Haki?

For a newcomer in the series, Devil Fruits seem to be the name of the game in One Piece. However, as Kaido himself stated, the powers of Devil Fruits will only get you so far, and Haki is the true secret to conquering the seas. Devil Fruits give extraordinary powers to their users, but Haki represents something even more primal.

The use and training on Haki is what separates the true powerhouses at sea from the regular pirates. The same applies to Marines, as it is a requirement to be able to have some mastery of Haki to really climb in their ranks. All the Marines with the rank of Vice Admiral and above are required to be able to use Haki.

The true essence of Haki comes from it being a primal energy source. It comes from the depths of the individual user’s spirit. That’s why some users with outstanding and unique spirits can use even more extraordinary feats with their Haki. It not only unlocks new abilities but amplifies one's existing natural talents to incredible heights.

This fusion of awakened powers complementing one's natural skills is the core of Haki. No need to consume some kind of cursed fruit to acquire special abilities, you only need enough spirit and training. It represents the true notion of the user to conquer one’s internal doubts, projecting their determination.

Haki | The Three Types

Haki represents the manifestation of one's willpower, it takes on three distinct forms that grant different abilities. Each type of Haki taps into the hidden potential and energy of the user. While Haki is hidden within each person, most warriors specialize in one type of Haki and are proficient in using one more than the others. The truly dedicated can improve their skills across all three types simultaneously with enough training. Even if a person can use Haki, there are varying levels of mastery and power between users.

Observation Haki

This type of Haki, also known as Kenbunshoku Haki, grants the user a sixth sense to perceive the world surrounding them more in depth. An Observation Haki user is capable of perceiving the presence, strength, and emotions of everyone around them. They can expand this perception to great distances, giving them superhuman eyesight. Experienced users can take this further by gauging the strength and Haki levels of those they sense. Some users are able to read the emotions and motivations of others, helping them overcome possible traps.

One of the biggest abilities that only the most advanced Observation Haki users can unlock is the precognitive ability. This effectively grants the user a glimpse into the future and allows them to predict the movements of their opponents. The stronger the level of the Haki user is, the more time they can see into the future, even though it’s not clear what’s the limit of this timeframe.

Observation Haki is present early in the series, being present as early as Jaya and Skypiea. Enel and other characters are able to use “Mantra,” which is essentially Skypiea’s word for Haki.

Armament Haki

Armament Haki, AKA Busoshoku Haki, has some key basic techniques that are super important to understand. The most basic one is called Hardening. It's when the user covers specific body parts with a tough, hardened layer of Haki. This layer, usually black in color, gives a big boost to both offense and defense.

On the offensive side, Hardening makes the user's attacks incredibly powerful. They can smash through tough objects and overpower defenses. With hardened fists, you can easily crush stone or iron. What's really scary is that it can even bypass the defenses of people who have Devil Fruit powers. Defensively, Hardening acts like super strong armor. It can protect the user from all sorts of attacks unless the attacker has superior Armament Haki. We've seen hardened body parts shrug off hits from blades and blunt weapons like they were nothing.

Now, let's take Hardening to the next level with the Imbuement technique. This is when objects like swords or guns get coated with hardened Haki. It makes them super tough and also gives them the same offensive power as when you harden your body. So if you shoot a hardened bullet or shoot a hardened arrow, they'll stay super tough even after being fired.

But the real masters of Armament Haki can do even more with two advanced techniques. The first one is called Emission. It lets the user send out powerful shockwaves from their hardened limbs without actually touching the target. Then we have the highest level, Internal Destruction. This is when Haki is channeled into something or someone to wreck them from the inside.

Armament Haki does have its limits. It can get worn out if you use it too much, and you'll have to rest up to get it back. If someone hits you hard or has a stronger Armament Haki, they can break through your defenses. Skilled swordsmen can actually pierce through the hardened layer too.

When you reach the highest levels of Armament Haki, it's absolutely devastating. It's a crucial tool for fighting in the wild and dangerous New World, especially against people with Devil Fruit powers. If you want to be a top-tier fighter, mastering Armament Haki is a must.

Conqueror’s Haki

Known as Haoshoku Haki in Japanese, and “Haki of the Supreme King”, Conqueror’s Haki isn't your ordinary Haki ability. This is something incredibly rare. Only those with true king levels of willpower and unbreakable spirit can ever hope to wield this extraordinary power.

Imagine standing before legends like Whitebeard or Big Mom as they unleash their Conqueror's aura. You'd feel a tremendous wave of dominating force that would shake you to your core. Weak-minded folks will straight-up faint just from being in the presence of these Supreme Rulers. Even the toughest warriors would have to focus to stay conscious.

Things get really crazy when top-tier masters of Conqueror's Haki clash their auras. It's total chaos with bursts of black lightning crackling across the skies and shockwaves that could level entire fleets! The heavens themselves can't even handle it when titans like Roger, Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom start throwing down. Their battles have literally ripped the skies apart in a mind-blowing display of supreme willpower.

There's an elite group of absolute masters who take it to the next level - infusing their physical strikes with Conqueror's Haki. We're talking about Luffy, Zoro, Yamato, and the OG legends coating their weapons and fists with this dominating spirit. Just picture Luffy channeling all that unstoppable willpower into one devastating strike against an indomitable beast like Kaido! That's the level of power it takes to seriously injure something considered "invincible."

Only an incredibly small number of people in the world can reach those ultra-supreme levels of Conqueror's mastery. We're talking about elite individuals like Shanks, Garp, and Rayleigh - the absolute top dogs when it comes to ruling over the realm of spirit and willpower. Witnessing their clashes could probably be cataclysmic enough to obliterate entire islands!

The Supreme Haki

Conqueror's Haki is the mark of those with "kingly qualities" - an innate charisma and ambition that allows them to inspire or dominate others. Many notable users hold royal titles or great influence. While rare overall, it's more prevalent in the New World where Luffy will face many such opponents.

There's no training method to awaken this ability since it manifests from birth. All known cases involve unconsciously unleashing it through sheer willpower during extremely intense moments. Conqueror's Haki can be controlled but not directly strengthened - it grows alongside the user's spirit.

Haki | Trivia

• Even though the term Haki was introduced later in the series, the first time we get to see a feat of Haki was in the first manga chapter, or episode four of the anime when Red-Haired Shanks to scare The Lord of The Coast away and save Luffy.
• Luffy’s iconic knockout of 50,000 enemies at Fishman Island was a hardcore feat, but Oda has confirmed that Shanks or Rayleigh would have been able to knock out the entire 100,000 foes at once.
• Armament Haki is the most common type of Haki, after the time skip it seems like everyone and their grandma can use it.
• Since Haki is intimately related to the person using it, every user is able to strengthen their Haki in different ways.
• Every member of the current Four Emperors of the Sea is a master in the three types of Haki, all of them except Buggy, who has not shown any sign of being able to use any type of Haki.
• Contrary to popular belief, Conqueror’s Haki isn’t visible to the naked eye, all the black lightning is more of a stylistic effect, rather than a visible phenomenon in the in-series world.
