Hange was one of the best soldiers ever to wear the legendary cloak of the Scout Regiment. She served her country until the very end - until she chose the mission and her comrades’ lives before her own.
However, Hange’s death in Attack on Titan was met with a lot of controversy because of both the way she died and the cause she sacrificed her life for. As the series concluded, a lingering question remained: Did Hange have to die?
How Did Hange Die in Attack on Titan?
In an attempt to halt Eren's devastating Rumbling and prevent global destruction, the remaining Scouts forged an unlikely alliance with their former Marleyan enemies. With time running short, their only hope rested on a single option: the Flying Ship.
The scouts were optimistic, anticipating success for their plan. However, an unexpected setback occurred as Floch appeared out of nowhere, sabotaging the mission by damaging the plane's fuel tank. His actions delayed the Scouts' departure from the hangar, allowing the Colossal Titans to close in.
Recognizing the necessity to create an opportunity for her comrades, Hange chose to confront the Titans, showing how great of a leader she was. Before taking action, she had an emotional moment with her squad and entrusted the role of commander of the Survey Corps to none other than Armin Arlert.
The Reason Why Hange Sacrificed Herself
Although Hange's choice to thrust herself into the center of the Colossal Titans' advance might seem extreme and irrational, she was fully aware of the risks. Her aspirations went far beyond her own life, as her sacrifice proved to be of great significance for both her comrades’ and humanity’s survival.
Hange bravely faced the large group of Titans, focusing on taking down the front ones before succumbing to the intense heat. Her actions resulted in the fallen Titans tackling the others, slowing down their march towards the hangar.
Even though the Titans managed to reach the hangar and cause havoc to everything in their path, the Scouts successfully prepared the flying ship and headed towards Eren. While it remains uncertain if they could have escaped without Hange's aid, her sacrifice undoubtedly played an important role in their escape.
Later, after Mikasa freed the world from the Titan curse, all characters met with their fallen friends for the last time. Connie and Jean met with Sasha while Levi was able to see two of his best friends - Erwin Smith and Hange.
Final Thoughts on Hange Zoë's Death
Hange's sacrifice, though it bought the Scouts only a mere minute or two, held immense significance. It defined the fate of humanity, determining between salvation and the potential destruction caused by the Rumbling.
Ultimately, Hange’s decisions proved to be reasonable as she knew that taking the difficult path was the only righteous choice. Her attack on the Titans showcased her great leadership qualities and solidified her as one of the best people ever to lead the Scouts.
Nobody knows what would’ve happened if Hange hadn't stepped in to slow down the Titans and help her friends escape the island. Her sacrifice, while tragic, deserves great respect as it indirectly helped stop the Rumbling. After all, one thing is certain: without Hange’s decision, humanity's survival chances were not good.
