After putting an end to Eren's Rumbling by killing him, Mikasa brought the centuries-long war to a close, finally achieving the freedom everyone, especially Eren, had been longing for.
Following the conclusion of Attack on Titan, multiple scenes show Mikasa living a new life in the world she and her friends created—a peaceful world with no enemies.
What Happened to Mikasa at the End of The Anime?
The mid-credit scenes in Attack on Titan's ending show Mikasa's adult life.
In the first scene, Mikasa and her friends visit the tree where Eren is buried. Later on, there's a time skip to a not-so-distant future where Mikasa is once again at the same tree, this time with a baby and a mysterious man in fancy clothes. After another time skip, Mikasa is shown with the same man and others, likely her family.
Mikasa's story wraps up as she lies in a bed of flowers, holding a small bouquet made from the same flowers near the tree. Confirming the obvious theory of her marriage, the anime features a wrapping around her ring finger, indicating she got the quiet family life she deserved.
These scenes give a conclusion to Mikasa's story and introduce another mystery:
Who is Mikasa's husband?
Does Mikasa End Up With Jean in Attack on Titan?
Looking back at past seasons, certain moments between Jean and Mikasa hint at Jean's feelings and offer insight into why he might propose to Mikasa at the end of Attack on Titan. Jean would often get a bit shy around her and once managed to compliment her looks. Besides, Jean had this unusual dream featuring a girl who strongly resembled Mikasa—everything from the hair and eyes down to minute details like the scar on her cheek.
Furthermore, more details support this theory. The man accompanying Mikasa to the tree, the one she started a family with, dressed in a suit and hat that reminded one of Jean's style. He also stood taller than Mikasa, with hair of a medium length resembling Jean's in the final season.
Jean’s Love Interest in Mikasa Throughout the Series
As mentioned earlier, when Mikasa and Jean first met, he was struck by her beauty and promptly complimented her hair. Shortly after, he witnessed Eren discussing cutting Mikasa's hair, which left him both mad and jealous. However, this wasn't the only instance of Jean becoming upset with Eren's behavior; he also criticized Eren for attacking Mikasa in his Attack Titan form.
Throughout the series, Jean consistently sought to be close to Mikasa on the battlefield, aiming to keep an eye on her and also appreciating her skillful use of the ODM Gear. Fortunately, his dedication to her proved invaluable to the story when he saved Mikasa's life by fiercely killing a Titan which attempted to devour her.
Jean's affection and love interest for Mikasa was hinted at throughout the series. She was the first person he checked on after a fight, and he prioritized her safety more than anyone else. To highlight his focus on Mikasa, Jean was the first to notice her small facial scar and inquire about it—the very same scar the woman in his dream possessed.
Final Thoughts on Mikasa’s Life After Attack on Titan’s Ending
Even though it's not officially confirmed who Mikasa ended up with, the signs strongly suggest it might be Jean. Besides the clear hints throughout the series as well as the ending, this theory just feels right, as Mikasa deserves to live a good life with a good man. Who better fits that bill than Jean Kirstein, the man who consistently showed genuine romantic interest throughout the entire series?
Even if Mikasa got married and had kids, she always kept the scarf Eren gave her, showing her everlasting love for the boy who saved her life as a child, and whom she grew up with. Despite Eren's horrifying actions to humanity, Mikasa stayed understanding the entire time, and loving him unconditionally.
Mikasa's and Eren's love story didn't end happily, and Eren's quest for freedom concluded tragically. However, that didn't rule out the possibility of Mikasa and Jean finding happiness together. The ending provides closure for both Jean and Mikasa, as well as all of our other characters who had fought tirelessly over the years for their freedom. The time-lapse of Mikasa's life in peace, and dying in old age serves as a fitting conclusion to the beautiful story of Attack on Titan.
