In the dark and ruthless world of Attack on Titan, many of the female characters had an enormous positive impact on their world. Their significance was so big that without them, humanity stood no chance in the ongoing war against their gruesome foes.
These women, armed with exceptional physical and intellectual abilities, paved the way for mankind's victories by confronting every challenge before them. They sacrificed a lot during this war, with some even giving their lives for this cause, all contributing to a better future.
8. Frieda Reiss
While not playing a major role in the ongoing story, Frieda had a significant impact on its trajectory. As a member of the Royal Family, she possessed the powers of the Founding Titan, which allowed her to manipulate the thoughts of others and erase their memories - just as she did with Historia.
Because Frieda lived under the rules of her father she lacked freedom and control over her own life. She wasn’t training to use the strength of the Founder and just played the role of a simple vessel instead.
This, however, quickly backfired on the day Grisha attacked the Royal family. Frieda was unable to fully utilize her powers and instead of easily beating Grisha, she lost and nearly all of her relatives were eaten.
7. Yelena
Being part of the Eldians’ allies - the anti-Marleyan volunteers - Yelena is one of the most crucial figures in the fourth season. While she is not a fighter, Yelena is a great tactician who silently has a big influence on the battle between the two nations.
However, her single-minded thinking and trust in Zeke's vision lead her to ignore the concerns and well-being of others, including her fellow Eldians. These manners often cause conflict within the alliance and are a reason why she is not liked and respected by some.
6. Gabi Braun
Gabi Braun is a girl introduced in the fourth season of Attack on Titan adding complexity to the series and altering the question of who the true antagonists are. She is a subject of Ymir and a young Marleyan soldier with strong beliefs that Eldia and the residents of Paradis Island are the worst people on Earth.
Gabi's determination to eliminate what she perceives as the enemy, similar to Eren's narrow thinking, is a characteristic that often makes her an unlikable character. Her intense desire to prove herself as a warrior clouds her judgment and leads her to make impulsive decisions that put her and others at risk.
As the series progresses, Gabi develops new understandings of the world. She learns more about the people on Paradis and starts to understand the other side more clearly, shifting her thinking about what she is fighting for.
5. Sasha Braus
Sasha is an innocent farmgirl and a very sweet person who has to live in the dark world of Attack on Titan. She is a simple girl known for her strong passion for food (especially potatoes) and her amazing marksmanship skills. Whether facing the challenge of confronting Titans or simply sharing a meal, Sasha is always ready to help her friends, highlighting the spirit of kindness and support.
While she seems cute on the outside, Sasha is a fierce warrior on the inside. She manages to prove her courage and selflessness on multiple occasions with the most memorable one being her courageously standing up against a Titan to save a friend, having nothing but a bow and arrow in her hands.
Sasha’s joyful presence is always a welcome breath of fresh air into the series. Her humor and love for her squadmates are unmatched, making her the sweetest and most loveable character in Attack on Titan.
4. Hange Zoe
Hange Zoe is an intriguing character whose vibrant energy outshines every member of the Survey Corps. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge motivates and gives her the courage to face the Titans and uncover the mystery behind their existence. This determination led her to capture and study two of these immense creatures up close, getting vital information about their behavior.
Hange is a brave warrior, but she doesn't possess the same level of combat expertise as some of the other Scouts. While she can fight a titan when necessary, her battle intelligence and leadership are what make her valuable to the squad - something that becomes most evident after Erwin’s death when she becomes the next commander.
These traits make Hange a double-edged sword for the Survey Corps. Sometimes her strong will to accomplish a goal results in unclear thinking and reckless decisions that jeopardize the squad’s safety. However, these instances are relatively rare and do not overshadow the numerous qualities that establish her as one of the best characters in the entire series.
3. Annie Leonhart
Annie Leonhart holds a very significant role in the series. She was the first main villain and one of the people who unraveled the truth of the Marleyan soldiers’ infiltration within the Survey Corps.
As a member of the Scouts, Annie proved that she was a good warrior and showed her combat skills against the Titans. However, her fighting abilities were really highlighted when she used her Female Titan form both in the first and the fourth season of Attack on Titan.
Contrary to what was initially thought, Annie was not a bad person. She did very bad things, but she has also shown compassion and love for many of her “enemies” on Paradis Island, ultimately helping them stop Eren’s Founding Titan.
2. Mikasa Ackerman
Mikasa Ackerman is the main female character in Attack on Titan. She is known for her exceptional combat skills and deep loyalty to Eren Yeager - a person she loves and swears to protect.
Mikasa's strengths lie in her mastery of various combat techniques and especially her unmatched command of the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear. She is one of the most skilled soldiers in the Survey Corps and shows levels of agility and precision only comparable to the great Captain Levi.
Her commitment to protecting Eren is occasionally the reason for her bad decisions. She often displays narrow focus in times of need and misses the big picture while following Eren and his needs. This emotional instability was a problem until after a scene in the fourth season where her eyes were finally opened to the truth. Only then did she switch her focus to what mattered the most and solidify her presence as humanity’s most important warrior.
1. Ymir Fritz
The one who started everything. Being a slave with no particular strengths, Ymir eventually became the strongest woman ever who changed the world for thousands of years to come. She was turned into the first Founder Titan and under the command of the mad King Fritz, she used her powers to conquer the planet, starting the long-lasting domination of Eldia.
However, even though Ymir had amazing abilities, she was never free. Her character symbolizes the idea of oppression and manipulation, adding a key layer of complexity to the story. Disappointingly, she never experiences freedom, giving away everything to help others.
Final Thoughts
In anime, where most shonen and action-packed anime series often tend to prioritize strong male protagonists and overshadow their female counterparts, Attack on Titan stands out as a masterfully crafted show that achieves a remarkable balance. It’s a show with a lot of strong, very likable, and most importantly, badass female characters who can best any threat that opposes them.
From the likes of Mikasa’s extraordinary battle skills to Sasha’s joyful energy, and Hange’s exceptional leadership, this series is full of many unique female characters that matter to the plot. These are characters who are always in the spotlight, being part of some of the most memorable moments seen in anime.
