The Ten-Tails is the most powerful-tailed beast in the Naruto series, surpassing all of the others in strength and might. However, this colossal creature's significance extends beyond just power, as it plays a crucial role in the story and the ambitions of key villains. Originating from the fusion of the God Tree and Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Ten-Tails is essentially the source of all chakra, making it a central figure in the shinobi world's history.
In Naruto Shippuden, Madara and Obito Uchiha strive to capture all nine tailed-beasts to resurrect the Ten-Tails, aiming to use its immense power for their own goals; Goals that set the stage for some of the most intense battles in the series. Understanding the Ten-Tails provides insight into the series' deeper themes of thirst for power, legacy, chakra, and the never-ending struggles among the shinobi.
The Origin and Story of the Ten-Tails
Ages ago, before there were ninjas, Kages, ninja villages, or any jutsu, humanity was always at war. During this time, a strange alien creation came to Earth and began a new era that changed everything. This deity was the God Tree, a powerful tree that produces a chakra fruit once in a millennium.
The ones responsible for this were the Otsutsuki, an advanced race of human-like creatures whose goal was to gain unlimited strength and power by colonizing planets. The God Tree, which drained the life energy of entire planets, was crucial to Otsutsuki’s plans. However, it also sparked an internal conflict that eventually led to the origin of all shinobi in the world of Naruto.
When the God Tree finally produced the chakra fruit, the Otsutsuki’s Princess Kaguya ate it and claimed all its power for herself. Unlike her people’s tradition, Kaguya stayed on Earth and had children who became the first shinobi—the first people to possess chakra. In time, Kaguya’s thirst for power grew so much that she created the Ten-Tails to fight her sons and take their chakra for herself.
Luckily, Hagoromo and Hamura were powerful enough to defeat their mother. To ensure lasting peace, the brothers sealed the Ten-Tails in two separate places: its body became one with the moon, and its chakra merged with Hagoromo’s. After becoming the Ten-Tails jinchuriki and earning the Sage of Six Paths name, Hagoromo took further steps to ensure his goal for peace would be effectively accomplished.
To achieve this, Hagoromo released the Ten-Tails from himself, creating the Nine-Tailed Beasts. This allowed him to tame the Ten-Tails’ powers and bring peace to the world for many years. Or, until Kaguya’s power-seeking ambitions eventually resurfaced, causing chaos in the Shinobi world.
While Hagoromo and Hamura sealed their mother, Kaguya left one last hope for herself in the form of Black Zetsu, who was tasked with bringing her back. After a thousand years, Black Zetsu manipulated events so that Madara Uchiha would gain the Rinnegan and pursue Kaguya’s goal. With his power and control over the Akatsuki and Obito Uchiha, Madara’s Eye of the Moon plan succeeded, bringing back the Ten-Tails and, eventually, Kaguya Otsutsuki.
However, humanity had evolved significantly since Kaguya first arrived on Earth, thanks to her giving people the power of chakra so long ago. With powerful shinobi like Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi, and Sakura facing her, Kaguya was unable to dominate the planet as she once did. Even though she and the Ten-Tails returned, they were ultimately defeated by Naruto and Sasuke, who sealed Kaguya and the Ten-Tails once and for all.
The Ten-Tails’ Forms and Appearance
Unlike the other Tailed Beasts, the Ten-Tails took on multiple forms over the years, each one extremely powerful and intimidating. Its initial and simplest form featured a scary-looking head with a large mouth full of spiked teeth and the Rinne-Sharingan positioned at the top center. Its body extended backward with ten tails, balanced by two enormous arms on either side. The creature was so huge that its hand easily dwarfed the Nine-Tailed Beasts.
Its second form is probably the Ten-Tails’ weirdest look, hard to describe even by looking at it, let alone through text. Nevertheless, here is an attempt. The second form of the Ten-Tails featured a long, slim body that extended into a lengthy neck topped with a very asymmetrical face. While its powerful eye remained at the top of its forehead, its other features were arranged so that it had only one ear on the right side, with its mouth positioned on the left. Additionally, in this form, the Ten-Tails had three limbs, and its ten tails resembled arm-like extensions of its body.
Now, it's time for the form that most closely resembled its name—the Ten-Tailed Beast. During this transformation, the Ten-Tails gained a muscular body with strong arms and legs, giving it a more humanoid appearance. However, its tails and face remained mostly the same, with only minimal differences and additions.
Finally, after Obito created the God Tree—a massive tree-like creation with the Rinne-Sharingan at its top—Kaguya transformed into the final form of the Ten-Tails. This beast had a circular body with the heads of the other Tailed Beasts emerging from it. Additionally, the Ten-Tails possessed multiple arms, a main rabbit-looking head with big ears, and its eye—the Rinne-Sharingan—positioned above its mouth at the center.
And, as an honorable mention, there is the partially formed circular-shaped Ten-Tails in the world of Boruto, where the Otsutsuki and their allies plot to yet again harness the power of this beast.
The Powers of the Ten-Tailed Beast
The Nine-Tailed Beasts are very powerful, right? Especially Kurama. Well, the Ten-Tailed Beast is a combination of all of their powers, plus more. It contains huge levels of chakra and is able to withstand any damage and inflict huge chaos effortlessly, making it undoubtedly one of the strongest creatures in the entire Naruto series.
Its power is evident from instances dating back to its creation. Even the Sage of Six Paths couldn’t fully contain the Ten-Tails, understanding that sealing it entirely would be impossible. This led him to divide the Ten-Tails’ chakra into nine separate beasts. However, when the Ten-Tails was whole again, it truly demonstrated its immense strength.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, the Ten-Tails showcased its chakra reserves by unleashing one of the most powerful ninjutsu ever – the Tailed Beast Ball. With this simple, yet very effective and destructive ability, the beast could easily level entire armies, landscapes, and cities. And the worst part? The more advanced it got, the more its Tailed Beast Ball grew in power.
When it comes to raw strength and resilience, the Ten-Tails remains unparalleled, showing immense physical power and unmatched speed that even surpassed those of the most powerful ninjas. With these abilities, it maneuvered the battlefield with ease, posing a formidable challenge to any opponent. Moreover, even when struck by the most powerful attacks such as the Tailed Beast Ball or Amaterasu, the Ten-Tails could endure and continue fighting the shinobi.
Additionally, the Ten-Tails could regenerate damaged body parts and generate new ones, such as limbs or even small Ten-Tails soldiers to defend itself against nearby threats. To counter those standing further, however, its ability to extend its limbs proved very handy, making the Ten-Tailed Beast nearly unbeatable.
The Ten-Tails Jinchuriki | From Hagoromo to Madara and Obito Uchiha
It's widely acknowledged that a jinchuriki of a Tailed Beast possesses significantly more power than an average shinobi. As the beast's strength increases, so does that of its jinchuriki, which is part of why Naruto is so strong. However, as evident, Kurama isn't the most powerful Tailed Beast, meaning that another one takes the spot of the most powerful one. And that’s the jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails.
With its huge power and vast chakra reserves, the Ten-Tails has proven to be an unstoppable force that has conquered worlds and effortlessly defeated humanity’s most powerful warriors. To control it thousands of years ago, the Sage of Six Paths sealed the Ten-Tailed Beast’s chakra within himself, becoming its first jinchuriki.
As previously mentioned, while becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki granted the Sage of Six Paths even greater power, he eventually had to use the Creation of All Things technique to divide its chakra into the Nine-Tailed Beasts. However, this did not end the threat of the Ten-Tails, as power-hungry shinobi like Madara and Obito sought to awaken this ancient creature once again.
In his quest, Obito eventually succeeded in becoming the next jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, gaining the power to single-handedly combat the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Since he possessed an incomplete version of the Ten-Tails and changed his ideals during the war, Obito was unable to fully control the beast and was ultimately defeated.
After Obito's failure, Madara Uchiha stepped in to demonstrate to the world the unnatural power of the Ten-Tailed Beast. As its third jinchuriki, Madara acquired enormous chakra reserves, jutsu mastery, and abilities like the Rinne-Sharingan, solidifying his status as the greatest threat the shinobi world had ever faced.
He effortlessly defeated all the Kage, posed a significant challenge to Team 7, and emerged victorious against the mighty Might Guy, who unlocked all Eight Gates to battle the elder Uchiha. And, despite Might Guy, Six Paths Naruto, and Sasuke coming close to overcoming Madara, Black Zetsu was the one who defeated the third jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails. This paved the way for Kaguya to return and become one with the final form of the Ten-Tails.
Final Thoughts on the Ten-Tails in Naruto
In the Naruto series, the Ten-Tails stands out as one of the most fearsome creatures ever. With its power, chakra levels, and ability to cause considerable chaos, it has played a very important role in shaping the history of shinobi. From the ancient times of the Sage of Six Paths to the modern battles of Naruto and Team 7, this beast remained the greatest threat to the shinobi world.
Its transformations, from the early forms to the monstrous final merging with Kaguya, showcase its unmatched power and resilience. Whether you admire its raw strength or fear its destructive potential, the Ten-Tails leaves an indelible mark on the Naruto universe as a symbol of might that altered the very fabric of the world and its rules.
