In the world of Naruto, the Three Legendary Sannin are some of the most famous and powerful ninjas. These three – Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade – were trained by the Third Hokage and became the best in their own right. Jiraiya, known as the Toad Sage, was Naruto Uzumaki’s mentor and taught him many important skills. Orochimaru, with his dark and mysterious ways, was one of the main villains in the series, always seeking more power. Tsunade, the Slug Princess, became the Fifth Hokage and brought her medical expertise to the village.

The Origin of the Three Legendary Sannin
Back in his younger years, Hiruzen Sarutobi led a prodigious trio of shinobi that he shaped into some of the greatest of all time. They became adept at using numerous jutsus and summoning techniques that few could match. However, despite their close bond and success on missions, the Three Legendary Sannin often lacked maturity, never saw eye to eye, and constantly tried to prove their individual powers and ideals.
These three completely different, yet equally powerful ninjas proved their skills time and time again, earning the respect of everyone in Konoha, from the lowest-ranking shinobi to the village leaders. The Legendary Sannin even had their own chance to become Hokage, further proving their power and significance in the village.
The greatest proof of this trio’s power came during the Second Great Ninja War. In this conflict, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade demonstrated remarkable jutsu mastery and strength in the battle against Hanzo who recognized their abilities, giving them the “Three Legendary Sannin” nickname. Regrettably, they disbanded after this war, each following paths that suited their personal needs and ideals.

He was Konoha’s greatest protector and a character even the worst villains in Naruto feared and respected.
Jiraiya’s Early Days
Jiraiya honed his skills under Hiruzen Sarutobi, swiftly surpassing the average shinobi in the village. His rapid growth in power made him a key figure during the Second Great Ninja War. Later, the Toad Sage trained Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan, helping to unlock their remarkable abilities, which would eventually lead to his downfall.
Abilities
As for his abilities, Jiraiya had an impressive command of ninjutsu and genjutsu, along with mastery over the Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Yin, and Yang nature transformations. He was well-known for his summoning techniques, capable of calling on the powerful toads from Mount Myoboku to assist him in battle. And while this may already seem incredibly powerful, it’s not what Jiraiya was truly known for.
Mastering the art of Senjutsu and harnessing the immense power of Sage Mode, Jiraiya gained unmatched abilities. Entering this state greatly enhanced his powers, senses, and chakra reserves, turning him into a shinobi capable of handling any challenge. However, the failure to fully study his enemy before combat led to his ultimate defeat in the fight against Pain.
Even though he was defeated, Jiraiya’s status as an iconic shinobi remains unchanged. He not only overcame many enemies but was also often considered for the role of Hokage—a position that reflects one's strength and a position the humble and light-hearted Jiraiya always declined.

Just like Jiraiya and Orochimaru, Tsunade played a major role in the Second Shinobi War, confronting Hanzo and helping to ease the conflicts between villages, which earned her the title of Legendary Sannin. After the war, she chose to step back from her previous duties and pursue a peaceful life – until Konoha called, at least.
Becoming a Hokage
After the death of the Third Hokage, Jiraiya nominated Tsunade as the best choice for the Hidden Leaf Village’s next leader, a role she eventually accepted. After settling in the village, rather than simply enjoying the status and staying safe in her office, Tsunade once again demonstrated why she deserved the title of Legendary Sannin.
Abilities
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, the powerful medical-nin was one of the Allied Shinobi Forces’ most important warriors, using her healing abilities to support her side. She could quickly and effectively heal any injury and even restore the chakra of her teammates. Additionally, her mastery of Summoning Techniques allowed her to call on Katsuyu, a slug capable of dividing itself to cure hundreds of ninjas simultaneously.
However, Tsunade was more than just a medical-nin. She showed immense physical strength too, especially when she fought Madara and managed to break his Susanoo. Additionally, the combination of her Senju and Uzumaki blood, along with her Creation Rebirth jutsu, which allowed her to heal herself of any injury, gave Tsunade a significant advantage in battle. She effectively used these strengths to defend Konoha and achieve victory in the Fourth Great Shinobi War.

After everything that happened in the Naruto series, it might seem surprising, but it’s true: Orochimaru was once one of Konoha’s best shinobi. He wasn't just a skilled ninja with a wide range of techniques and remarkable combat abilities; Orochimaru was also incredibly smart. Perhaps even too smart for Konoha’s and his own good.
Orochimaru’s Selfish Mission
After fighting alongside his Sannin teammates and defending the shinobi world during the Second Great Ninja War, Orochimaru chose to leave the village and pursue a personal goal of immortality and becoming the strongest, most versatile ninja. To achieve this, he traveled through all the Naruto villages, joined the Akatsuki, worked with the Anbu, and conducted various dark experiments that were far from ethical.
Abilities
Over time, Orochimaru got what he was looking for. He mastered all nature transformations, learned to summon a giant snake to fight alongside him, and became skilled in clone techniques, medical ninjutsu, space-time ninjutsu, and barrier ninjutsu. Additionally, he developed the Living Corpse Reincarnation technique, which allowed him to heal or modify his body, and even switch to a new one at will.
While Orochimaru may not have been the biggest threat in the series, he remained an important figure, particularly in the original Naruto anime and manga series. He defeated Hiruzen Sarutobi, caused many problems for the main characters, and even manipulated events to pave the way for more morally gray shinobi to emerge. However, as Naruto: Shippuden progressed, his role diminished, and this Legendary Sannin became more of a side character that few were talking or thinking about.
