One of the best aspects of Hogwarts Legacy is the incorporation of fantastic beasts. The game gives you the ability to capture creatures both large and small, adorable and terrifying, and then feed, groom, breed, and play with them. The creatures are kept in different habitats, called Vivariums, within the Room of Requirement, but capturing them can be frustrating.
Oftentimes, you’ll come across poachers or other aggressive enemies that stand in between you and that adorable puffskein, and once you’ve finally defeated them, you have to chase the little ball down. However, there is a formula that will help you easily capture all the nifflers and puffskeins you want.

In order to capture beasts, you first need the Nab-Sack. The Nab-Sack is a magical bag that allows you to “nab” beasts from their dens, saving them from poachers. The only way to get this magical item is to complete the main quest: The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. This quest is kind of a decent way into the game, so you’ll have to play through the main story in order to get there. The quest comes after Percival Rackham’s Trial and before Charles Rookwood’s Trial.
The quest will take you to the Room of Requirement where Deek will teach you how to use the Nab-Sack. He’ll suggest a few spells to slow them down or pull them closer to you, but there are better spells out there that’ll make your life easier.

Fantastic beasts like to congregate and inhabit one area, called dens, which makes them easier to find. These dens are marked on your map by little paw prints. Whenever you hover your cursor over it, it will tell you what type of beast den it is. There are thirteen types of beasts that you can capture and take care of: Nifflers, Mooncalves, Puffskeins, Diricawls, Fwoopers, Kneazles, Unicorns, Phoenixes, Thestrals, Hippogriffs, Jobberknolls, Graphorns, and Giant Purple Toads.
Each one of these have dens that spawn beasts for you to capture, but the Graphorn den is a little special. You will have to play most of the game and complete the main quest Lord of the Shore before any Graphorns will spawn in the den, and only one spawns at a time.

After fast traveling to the den you want, make sure to have three things assigned to your spell slots: the Nab-Sack, Accio, and Arresto Momentum. These three things will make it so much easier to capture nearly any creature.
The spell Accio is acquired during your first Charms class, so you don’t have to worry about obtaining that spell. On the other hand, you have to work for Arresto Momentum. You will need to complete both Madam Kagawa’s Assignments, which becomes available after Percival Rackham’s Trial. In order to do the quest you will need a broom. A broom is 600 Galleons Sprintwiches in Hogsmeade
From there, you will have to complete the first assignment, which requires you to pop five balloons over Hogsmeade Station and then learn Glacius. For the second assignment, where you learn Arresto Momentum, you will have to pop five more balloons over the Spire and Keenbridge Tower.
With these two spells under your belt, you can begin.
First things first, make sure the creature you want to capture is in range for you to cast a spell on them. Next, you’ll cast Accio to pull them closer, which will help you out later on. You’ll then cast Arresto Momentum on the creature, which freezes them in place. This spell has a time limit though, so quickly use your Nab-Sack to suck them in.
Most of the time, Arresto Momentum will start to wear off before you’ve finished capturing them. Different animals, especially the bigger ones, take longer to capture, and this is where using Accio to pull them close to you helps. That way, if they do run, they are unlikely to get too far before your Nab-Sack is finished doing its thing. The other creatures will scatter, but if you cast Revelio then you can easily find out where they ran off to.
This formula is especially helpful for smaller, flying beasts and quick ones. However, creatures like Thestrals and Hippogriffs are still a pain to catch.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of capturing beasts, you’re going to want to capture as many as possible from every den, but keep in mind that there is a limit to how many your bag can hold at a time. It’s always heartbreaking to run out of room when there is still one little mooncalf that still needs rescuing. Now, you’re forced to leave it behind, all alone, after you’ve kidnapped its entire family.
Luckily, the Nab-Sack can hold plenty of creatures, up to fifty five at a time! Each Vivarium can hold up to twelve beasts and four species. That means you can hold forty eight beasts. For those you don’t have room for, they can be sold at Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade for 120 Galleons.

Since you can’t capture baby creatures in the wild, and they’re so cute that you have to have them, breeding beasts is a must. You can’t deny that you want a baby Niffler or Mooncalf running up to you for food and attention. There is a side quest, called Foal of the Dead, that will teach you how to do this, and you will unlock the breeding pen. In order to breed beats, you need two of the same species of beast that are of opposite sex, which can be found in your beast inventory. You will have to have completed the Foal of the Dead quest and unlocked the breeding pen. Then, you will need one free space in the Vivarium for your new baby.
Now that you know how to capture beasts easier, you can set off and explore the beasts' dens across the map and bring them to their new home!
You’ll need the Nab-Sack, a magical bag obtained during the main quest The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. It lets you rescue creatures from poachers and bring them to your Vivarium.
Use Accio to pull them closer and Arresto Momentum to freeze them. Then, quickly use your Nab-Sack before the effect wears off to secure your new creature.
Each beast has its own den marked by a paw print on the map. Hovering over it tells you which type lives there, from Puffskeins and Nifflers to Thestrals and Graphorns.
Graphorns only appear after completing the Lord of the Shore main quest. Even then, only one Graphorn spawns at a time, so patience is key.
The Nab-Sack can hold up to 55 creatures. Each Vivarium can contain 12 beasts from up to 4 species, so manage your space wisely—or sell extras at Brood and Peck.
Complete the side quest Foal of the Dead to unlock the breeding pen. Place a male and female of the same species in your Vivarium, and soon you’ll have an adorable baby beast.
Use Accio to bring them close, then Arresto Momentum to freeze them midair before using the Nab-Sack. This combo works wonders on speedy Nifflers and Mooncalves.
