Ravenclaw Personality Traits | What kind of person is a Ravenclaw?
Students sorted into Ravenclaw are intellectual, witty, wise, and have a passion for learning. Members of the house are very competitive, especially when it comes to their grades and Quidditch. They strive to have top marks, are always studying, and are very creative. Despite their bright minds, Ravenclaws can sometimes be absent-minded, condescending, and focus too much on being the best. Ravenclaws are also known to be eccentric and quirky, like Luna Lovegood and Uric the Oddball.
Ravenclaws tend to excel in classes like Charms, Potions, and Astronomy. The house of Ravenclaw corresponds most with the element of Air.
Ravenclaw House History
Ravenclaw House was founded by Rowena Ravenclaw when she and the other founders, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin, established Hogwarts. The house founder valued those who were passionate about learning and had a bright mind. Ravenclaw had a daughter, Helena Ravenclaw, who ran away with the Ravenclaw diadem when she was young. It is rumored that Rowena died of a broken heart soon after.
The house ghost is the Grey Lady and it's revealed later in the Harry Potter series that she is Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter, Helena, and she is the only person who knows where the lost diadem is. The diadem is one of the many objects Voldemort turned into a Horcrux and it was destroyed during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Uric the Oddball, one of the medieval wizards talked about in History of Magic, was also a Ravenclaw. He was known for his eccentric behavior, such as wearing a jellyfish as a hat. It's possible that he was taught by the founders of Hogwarts during his time as a student. His manner of death is unknown, but it's speculated that it was from old age.
During the thirteenth century, a Ravenclaw witch named Ignatia Wildsmith created Floo Powder, one of the most popular ways to travel during Harry's time, next to Portkeys and Apparating.
Laverne de Montmorency was a witch sorted into Ravenclaw and studied potions between 1834 to 1841. She went on to be a pioneer and invent different love potions. She died in 1893.
The head of Ravenclaw House, Filius Flitwick, was born on October 17th. The year is unknown, but it was most likely sometime during the 1900s. It's suspected that, based on his appearance, he has goblin ancestry. He was sorted into Ravenclaw during his time at Hogwarts. He went on to teach Charms and became the head of house after graduating.
Ravenclaw Common Room
The entrance to the Ravenclaw common room can be found at the top of a spiral staircase in the Ravenclaw tower. The room is the highest common room out of all the houses and offers the best views of the Hogwarts grounds. There is a bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle on the common room door and students must solve a riddle to enter. The riddles change frequently. An example of a known riddle used is "Which came first, the phoenix, or the flame?"
Past the entrance is a brightly lit common room decorated with blue, purple, white, and bronze. There's a dome ceiling and arched windows that provide enough light to make the room glow. It has white marble floors and, in one part of the common room, a ceiling decorated with stars. This common room is perfect for lovers of natural light and the night sky.
