In the cozy little town of Hogsmeade Village, you can find J. Pippin’s Potions, which has all the potion recipes and most of the ingredients you need in stock. Hogwarts Legacy can’t live up to the books and movies that inspired it without the addition of potion making. There are seven potions within the game to help aid the player during combat or while sneaking about. In this article, we will be covering the best ways to find and make these potions.
If you have yet to unlock the Room of Requirement, these potions can be brewed in Professor Sharp’s Potions Classroom and plants can be grown in the Herbology Classroom. To access these potions for use on PC, hold Tab and use your mouse to select the item then press Tab again to consume it. For PlayStations, hold L1 and use your analog to select the desired potion, then tap L1 to consume. And for Xbox, repeat these same steps but with the LB button instead.
Thunderbrew Potion
The Thunderbrew Potion is a powerful damage potion that conjures dark clouds and bolts of lightning that will strike any surrounding opponents. This potion is great to use as an offensive tool while battling enemies. It will stun and damage those within the dark clouds for thirty seconds, helping you take down goblins and Ashwinders alike.
The potion recipe can be bought at J. Pippin’s Potions in Hogsmeade. It costs 1,200 Galleons and requires three ingredients:
- 1 Leech Juice
- 1 Shrivelfig Fruit
- 1 Stench of the Dead.
The easiest way to gather these ingredients is to buy them from J. Pippin’s. Leech Juice is 150 Galleons and Stench of the Dead is 100 Galleons. Shrivelfig, however, cannot be found in the open world or bought at J. Pippin’s. The only way to get it is to buy it from the Magic Neep in Hogsmeade for 150 Galleons. If you don't feel like buying them every time you need them, you can buy seeds for 450 Galleons and grow them yourself in a medium pot, which you can purchase from Tomes and Scrolls for 750 Galleons.
But if you’re short on money after buying the costly recipe, the next alternative is to scour the world.
Leech Juice can be found from leeches on the shores of most lakes in the game. Lastly, the Stench of the Dead is dropped by enemies, like the Inferi, which can be found in graveyards and ruins.
Wiggenweld Potion
The Wiggenweld Potion is probably one of the most important potions in Hogwarts Legacy. The Wiggenweld Potion is used to restore health during combat. It is a very common drop and can be found by looting chests, bags, and bodies, so you never have to worry about running out while on a mission.
The potion recipe is free and one of the items you pick up from Hogsmeade at the start of the game. You only need two ingredients for this one:
- 1 Horklump Juice
- 1 Dittany Leaves
Dittany Leaves can be purchased from the Magic Neep for 100 Galleons, or you can grow them in the Herbology Class or in the Room of Requirement. Horklump Juice can be bought at J. Pippin’s for 50 Galleons or found throughout the world. They look like spiky purple mushrooms and are most commonly found outside of caves.
Felix Felicius
Felix Felicius, also known as Liquid Luck, may sound more familiar than the other potions, and that’s because of the vital role this potion played in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This potion recipe is only available for those who preordered Hogwarts Legacy, and there is no way to get it after the fact.
For the players who are lucky enough to have this potion, it can be used to find treasure throughout the environment. If you are one of the people who like to turn off all your HUD elements to immerse yourself into the Wizarding World, at least make sure your mini map is on for this potion.
The ingredients you need are:
- 1 Lacewing Flies
- 1 Fluxweed Stem
Lacewing Flies are 100 Galleons, but can be found in the world and are pretty easy to spot, since they glow like fireflies. They are most commonly found in grassy areas, congregated around bushes. You don’t need to travel too far outside of the castle to find them.
For Fluxweed Stems you will need to travel to the Magic Neep once again. They can be bought for 150 Galleons or you can buy the seeds for 350 Galleons and grow them yourself.
Once you have all the ingredients you need, large chests will be revealed on your mini map for an entire in-game day and then you can begin your treasure hunt.
Edurus Potion
The Edurus Potion improves one’s defense by turning their skin into stone and is great to use during combat for an extra layer of protection. The potion lasts for twenty seconds, but it could make all the difference in the world during a challenging fight.
You can purchase the recipes from J. Pippin’s Potions for 300 Galleons. The ingredients you need to make it are:
- 1 Ashwinder Eggs
- 1 Mongrel Fur
Ashwinder Eggs can be purchased at J. Pippin’s for 150 Galleons, or they can be collected in the open world. They are most commonly found on rocky, flat terrain. J. Pippin’s also sells Mongrel Fur for 50 Galleons, or you can venture into the forest and fight a few Mongrels who will drop their fur after they’ve been defeated.
Maxima Potion
The Maxima Potion is another good potion to use during a battle to inflict more damage. The potion will increase your spell damage for thirty seconds. The use of the potion comes with some cool visual effects, such as the red glowing hand that you use to cast spells.
The recipe can be bought from J. Pippin’s for 500 Galleons. The ingredients include:
- 1 Leech Juice
- 1 Spider Fang
Leech Juice can be found from leeches along the shores or bought, while Spider Fangs are acquired from the source itself. If you are not a fan of spiders, their fangs can be purchased from J. Pippin’s for 50 Galleons, thankfully, but if you are brave enough to venture into spider infested caves, you’ll save yourself some money.
Focus Potion
The Focus Potion reduces all spell cooldowns and is great to use in combat if you have that one favorite spell that takes too long to reuse. The longest cooldown is ninety seconds for Avada Kedavra, but this potion will help you use the one-hit killing curse more often. The duration of the Focus Potion is fifteen seconds.
The potion recipe is one of the most expensive at J. Pippin’s, costing 1,200 Galleons.
This potion required three ingredients:
- 1 Lacewing Flies
- 1 Fluxweed Stem
- 1 Dugbog Tongue
While we’ve already covered where to find the first two (Lacewing Flies in bushes and Fluxweed Stem from the Magic Neep), Dugbog Tongues take a bit more work, and they sound disgusting.
Dugbog Tongues, unfortunately, can’t be bought from J. Pippin’s Potions, or from any other vendors. You must fight the beasts themselves. Most Dugbogs can be found in shallow water, and can even be spotted outside of Hogwarts. There are more Dugbogs in swampy areas, primarily in the South Sea Bog part of the map.
There are two different Dugbog enemy types, but each will drop their tongues after you have defeated them. Then you can finally make that potion.
Invisibility Potion
There are a few ways to turn invisible in Hogwarts Legacy, but unfortunately neither of them are done with a cloak. Since the Disillusionment Charm doesn’t fully turn you invisible, and you can still be spotted if you get too close to enemies, the Invisibility Potion is your next best go to. However, the potion has a very short duration of only five seconds.
The recipes can be bought for 800 Galleons at J. Pippin’s and you’ll need three ingredients:
- 1 Leaping Toadstool Caps
- 1 Knotgrass Sprig
- 1 Troll Bogeys
You can buy all three of these ingredients in Hogsmeade. Leaping Toadstool Caps are 150 Galleons apiece and Troll Bogeys are 100 Galleons apiece at J. Pippin’s. Knotgrass Sprigs can be bought at the Magic Neep for 150 Galleons, or you can buy the seeds and grow them yourself for 350 Galleons.
Leaping Toadstool Caps can be found throughout the world pretty easily, and grow practically anywhere. Troll Bogeys, however, are harder to obtain since you have to take down a full grown troll, so maybe the price at J. Pippin’s isn’t too bad.
Now that you are better acquainted with the ins and outs of potion making in Hogwarts Legacy, you can go out and explore the world for yourself, all while spicing up your gameplay with these potions.
