Magic: The Gathering [Fifth Dawn] - Nuts and Bolts Theme Deck

Small, inexpensive artifacts have been staples of the Magic game since its earliest days, but the Fifth Dawn expansion boosts their usefulness to another level. Cards like Auriok Salvagers and Leonin Squire bring cheap artifacts back from your graveyard and apply early attacking pressure. With sixteen artifacts that cost {1} or less, the Nuts and Bolts deck takes full advantage of your creatures' scavenging abilities.
The star of the deck is Trinket Mage. When it comes into play, you can search your deck for whatever little artifact you need, even an artifact land. Let the dumb kids play with the big, expensive creatures. Many of the best Magic decks rely on cheap spells, deck manipulation, and utility. Nuts and Bolts has these in spades.

Trinket Mage's partners in crime are Auriok Salvagers and Salvaging Station. They generate great card advantage by getting back the little artifacts you've already used so that you can play them again and again. Just keep your defenses up long enough to get about six lands in play and let these cards do their thing. You can recycle Chromatic Sphere to draw lots of extra cards, Sunbeam Spellbomb to gain tons of life, or Aether Spellbomb - the best artifact to reuse - to repeatedly return all your opponents' creatures to their hands, allowing your creatures to eventually walk in for the win.

Remember to play lots of creatures early and then use Trinket Mage and Steelshaper's Gift to find some devastating Equipment for them. Bonesplitter is always great, but the surprise gem of the deck is Skullclamp — one of the first cards you should search for. Not only does Skullclamp give your creatures an offensive boost, it also converts them into extra cards when they die. As the game progresses, Qumulox and Synod Centurion provide some beefy backup for your army.

If you need an offensive edge, consider adding a few copies of Auriok Steelshaper from the Mirrodin set. Since this creature reduces the cost of equipping a creature by {1}, it allows you to move many of your Equipment for free. It also gives all your Knights and Soldiers +1/+1 if it has Equipment on it. Extra Bonesplitters and Auriok Glaivemasters combine nicely with the Steelshaper, making your small creatures a force to be reckoned with.

This deck doesn't waste time with subtlety. Its primary tactic is to make a horde of Goblins and attack! Your shrieking battalion includes Goblin Arsonist, which can be lethal even when it dies, Mogg Flunkies, which is surprisingly big but won't attack by itself, and Goblin Battle Jester, which can keep your opponent's creatures from blocking. Krenko himself can double the number of Goblins you have each turn, quickly providing you with an overwhelming force.

Goblins aren't the only weapons in your arsenal. Flying, fire-breathing Dragons such as Dragon Hatchling and Furnace Whelp are devastating in the air. Both Trumpet Blast and Cleaver Riot supercharge your attack. Spells like Chandra's Fury and Volcanic Geyser burn away potential blockers—or the last remnants of your opponent's life total. Red's outright aggression is well matched to the brutal side of green's nature magic: Titanic Growth and Serpent's Gift are both ways for a 1/1 Goblin to take out a gigantic opposing creature.

If you're looking for ways to make this deck even more savage, Thundermaw Hellkite is a great addition. This 5/5 flying Dragon has haste and can clear opposing fliers out of its way! Firewing Phoenix is another red flying creature, and like any good Phoenix, it won't stay dead for long before rising from the ashes. Finally, the planeswalker Chandra, the Firebrand can double your spells and deal plenty of damage in her own right.

The "Sole Domination" deck focuses on creatures with the exalted ability. If you attack with exactly one creature, each of your creatures with exalted boosts that creature by giving it +1/+1 for the turn—and you'll still have the other creatures back on defense! The most fearsome attacker of all is Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis. If this 5/5 flying Demon attacks alone, not only does it get all the exalted bonuses (including its own), but it also forces your opponent to sacrifice a creature.

The deck's other creatures are particularly suited to take advantage of those bonuses. Vampire Nighthawk has flying, lifelink, and deathtouch. Liliana's Shade let you spend black mana to make it bigger in addition to any exalted bonuses. Veilborn Ghoul makes it almost impossible for you to run out of creatures: it comes back to your hand from your graveyard when you play a Swamp!

Although the exalted ability appears in black as an expression of powergrabbing, in white, exalted is an expression of communal support. Among your white cards with exalted is Angelic Benediction, an enchantment that not only boosts your solitary attacker but also taps a potential blocker whenever your champion attacks.

For even bigger boosts, try adding more cards with exalted to your deck. Cathedral of War is a land with exalted, and Sublime Archangel gives each of your creatures exalted, even if they already have the ability—and each instance works independently! Disciple of Bolas takes advantage of all those temporary boosts to cash in your creature for extra life and extra cards. And the planeswalker Liliana of the Dark Realms harnesses the power of Swamps for a variety of delightfully evil purposes.
