“Open fire!” That’s an order often given by artillery officers when their units are called in to “soften” an enemy’s position prior to a ground conflict. Though the use, style, and type of heavy ordnance used by artillery units has become more effective and precise throughout the centuries, highly trained personnel are still the ones responsible for deploying, plotting, and firing the world’s most powerful artillery pieces, such as the 155-mm Howitzer.
In World War II, the use of artillery was a staple in providing support for both sets of combatants. The United States employed various types of field artillery pieces, such as the 105-mm and 155-mm Howitzer cannon, which gave its forces excellent fire-support for offensive actions and to repel enemy attacks. The artillery officer’s role was paramount to the success of any fire-support operation. He was responsible for the deployment of his unit’s artillery pieces, plotting an enemy’s position on a grid map, then directing his troops in the actual firing of the artillery pieces. When all went correctly, the effect of good artillery fire had devastating results. Enemy positions were neutralized, and offensive operations could move forward.
The 634th Field Artillery Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division was a unit whose combat effectiveness proved most successful for the Allies. The battalion fought in numerous, intensive engagements against Axis forces in the Mediterranean region of the European Theatre of Operations (ETO), and helped the Allies blast their way into Germany in 1945. The need for good artillery can never be underestimated, and during World War II, the Allies had incredibly accurate field artillery pieces and excellent officers who played a major role in achieving total victory over the Axis.
