The Vietnam War was the nation's longest conflict, and many wondered if it should ever have been fought at all. For over a decade it touched the lives of every American, tested the resolve of our national spirit, and created deep emotional questions about our most fundamental American principles. It seemed like everyone felt the anguish of knowing someone who had died or had been wounded in Vietnam. That connection made the war intensely personal. Without making a statement, it makes the most powerful statement of all. There is simply a solemn V-shaped wall quietly nestled into the ground. The Wall points to the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. 58,000 names are etched deeply into the Wall's reflective black granite surface. These are the 'loved and lost."

The most visited National Park Service Monument in Washington, the Wall has touched a healing chord in the conscience of the country. Its mirrored surface invites reflection on our nation and the nature of war itself, reminding us of the tragic fact that no matter how worthwhile or heroic its cause, the sacrifice of war is ultimately measured in human lives. Over the years, pilgrims visiting the memorial have left over 50,000 treasured items in silent tribute to those they came to honor. Many of these gifts have found their way into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection museum. However, one of the most stirring tributes came from artist Lee Teter. In 1988, Teter and several members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 began to envision a painting that would capture the emotional power evoked by a visit to the memorial. That painting. Reflections, depicts a veteran reaching out to the Wall to keep faith with the reflected images of fallen comrades. Chapter 172 currently owns the copyright to Reflections and uses the proceeds from the sale of prints to benefit veterans and other philanthropic projects. In a sense, the painting itself keeps the faith by helping surviving veterans and ensuring that the 'lost' are not forgotten.
