Who is Doma?

Doma is one of the demons in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga and anime series. He is one of the strongest demons in the series, as he is the Upper Rank Two demon. He’s also one of the secondary antagonists in the Infinity Castle Arc.

Additionally, he is the leader of a religious group called the Eternal Paradise Faith. This group is dedicated to worshiping him. In return, he listens to his follower’s problems and offers them guidance and advice. Primarily, the cult serves as a means for Doma to capture and devour his victims, who are usually pretty women.

Doma | History

Doma was born to unnamed parents who founded a cult called the Eternal Paradise Faith. As he was born with some distinctive physical features, such as his pale hair and rainbow-colored eyes, people believed he was sent from the gods, that he was special.

Due to this, his parents made him the head of the cult. People would troop in to worship him and seek his guidance. He used to spend long hours listening to people’s troubles and woes. Even though he saw them all as foolish for pouring out their troubles to a child, he always listened to them anyway.

One day, his mother killed his father after she found out that he made the cult’s female followers into concubines. She took her own life after. Even though Doma didn’t believe in Buddha, paradise, or any parts of the religion, he kept up the pretense and kept being the leader of the cult.

Doma | Transformation

Not much is known about how exactly Doma became a demon, but all signs indicate that he met Muzan Kibutsuji when he was twenty years old. Muzan most likely turned him into a demon at that time. The Demon King saw him as a strong warrior and the potential he possessed. Muzan offered to turn him into a demon, which he accepted. Afterwards, he began consuming his followers, after promising them paradise, as he thought they’d get to live forever inside him.

After years of mindlessly consuming his followers, Doma rose through the ranks to become the Upper Rank Six demon. After Daki and Gyutaro became demons, he rose the ranks again and became the Upper Rank Two. He surpassed Akaza, the Upper Rank Three, despite the fact that Akaza became a demon before him.

Doma | Appearance

Doma would easily pass for being the flashiest demon in the entire Demon Slayer series. He is a striking young man with a slender, well-defined physique with lustrous golden blonde hair. In addition, his nails have a distinctive pointed shape and are stained with a shade of blue that sometimes appears as purple. His eyes are extraordinarily beautiful, as the irises appear to have rainbow hues. Etched in his eyes, are the daiji and kanji characters for “Upper Rank” and “Two” respectively. When he met Daki and Gyutaro, his left eye carried the kanji for “Six”.

Doma wears a red sweater that looks like it's dripping black ink over his shoulders and chest. He also wears a pair of tan hakama pants. He was often seen in the past wearing a red robe with black ink marks. He also wears a yellow juban with stripes and white pants with a gold belt. On top of his head, he sometimes sports a black cap with decorations that hang down, resembling the ink blot effect.

Doma | Personality

As A Human

Doma was completely incapable of comprehending or feeling any human emotion. This is seen in how nonchalant he was when he witnessed his mother killing his father and then herself. Little Doma wasn’t even fazed or moved at the sight of such an occurrence. In fact, the only thing that bothered him was the smell of blood. He also never liked his parents, as he regarded them as being stupid, especially for making him the cult’s leader and believing in things like paradise.

As A Demon

Doma has quite a disturbing personality. To put it simply, he's a real downer. He's a psychopath, which means he doesn't understand human emotions. Even when he was a human, feelings and emotions were foreign concepts to him.

Doma believes that life is just one big painful experience and that death is the only way to escape it. He has a twisted view of reality and thinks that his evil deeds are somehow a form of saving people. He doesn't like humanity at all, but he's good at pretending to be friendly to fool others. However, if someone pushes his buttons, he can turn cold and dangerous in an instant.

Interestingly, he seems to have a thing for targeting women to devour, not for any profound reason, but because he thinks they're more filling. He doesn't care much for his fellow demons either and sees them as bothersome pests below him. He's unlike other demons who have a code of honor or show respect to their enemies. Instead, he enjoys making fun of them.

Doma is quite the actor, just like the big bad guy, Muzan. He's been running a cult for a whole century, blending in with humans and pretending to be a regular guy to gather more followers.

In a nutshell, Doma is a psychopath who can put on a friendly face but has a seriously disturbing personality underneath. He's manipulative, clever, and obsessed with the idea that death is the only escape from life's suffering.

Doma | Relationships

With Other Demons

Unlike all other demons, Doma is the only demon who speaks to Muzan as though they are friends, but his inability to feel emotions such as remorse is one of the reasons why the Demon King dislikes him. However, that doesn’t reduce his adoration for his lord.

With the other upper ranked demons, he was always jovial and seemed to care about their wellbeing, especially of his subordinates. He’s also very friendly whenever he’s around them too. His relationship with Daki and Gyutaro could very well be regarded as his most important. He feels responsible for them since he was the one who turned them into demons. He did even show a little bit of remorse when he heard of their death. He offered to gouge out his eyes as penance for not watching out for them!

With Demon Slayers

Aside from the whole demon/demon slayer being sworn enemies relationship, Doma has some deeper relationships with some demon slayers like Inosuke and Shinobu Kocho.

In the case of Inosuke, Doma is responsible for the death of his mother. He’d met Inosuke when the lad was a child because Inosuke’s mother was one of his followers. Doma liked her because she was very pretty. After Inosuke’s mother found out that he was a demon that devoured his female followers, he killed her. He also killed her mother and husband when their questions about her death started disturbing him.

He is also responsible for the death of Kanae Kocho, the former Flower Hashira and Shinobu’s elder sister. He mortally wounded her in a battle and ran off as the sun was already coming up, leaving her for dead. Shinobu found her elder sister afterward and swore to find and enact revenge on Doma.

With His Followers

Since he was a child, he’s been crowned leader of the cult his parents founded. He was bored with listening to the troubles of people and also giving advice to them. Everything he did for them was just pretend. He doesn’t even like them, but, like most psychopaths, he only likes the attention he gets.

Upon his transformation into a demon, he starts seeing them as food and only selects the pretty females among them to devour. By doing that, he believed that he’s offering them paradise, alleviating them of all their troubles, and giving them eternal solace. To avoid getting discovered, he’d been keeping the population of his followers to a minimum of about 250, limiting their exposure to the outside world.

Doma | In the Story

Quite a number of demons in Demon Slayer are consequential in moving and influencing the narrative of the story, and Doma is no different. He starred in three important and hefty arcs: Entertainment District, Swordsmith Village and Infinity Castle Arcs.

The Entertainment District Arc showed him in Gyutaro’s memories when he saved the siblings, Daki and Gyutaro, from certain death. Gyutaro’s recollection of him showed that he was responsible for transforming the siblings into demons. Doma found them while he was also devouring some women in the Entertainment District.

In the Swordsmith Village Arc, Doma and other upper rank demons are seen in the Infinity Castle in a meeting with Muzan Kibutsuji. The Demon King voiced his displeasure at how useless the Twelve Kizuki demons are after Gyutaro’s death. Doma teases the other upper ranked demons and even Muzan Kibutsuji himself. Afterward, he begs Nakime to teleport him to where Gyokko and Hantengu have been sent, but she returns him to his base of operations.

In the Infinity Castle Arc, Doma debuts as a cruel and powerful demon. He engages in a lethal battle against Shinobu, the Insect Hashira. While Doma first looks forward to the chance to have another meal, their encounter rapidly turns violent. Shinobu uses her poison-infused strikes to get revenge on Doma for killing her sister. Despite her best attempts, Doma proves to be a formidable foe with his ability to regenerate and immunity to her poisons.

As the fight intensifies, both parties get serious injuries. Doma is temporarily defeated by Shinobu after she manages to deliver a decisive strike. He makes a startling comeback, which leads to a tragic turn of events in which he devours Shinobu, leaving only her butterfly-shaped hairpiece.

Inosuke later joins the fray against Doma alongside Kanao, another skilled Demon Slayer. Inosuke's arrival disrupts Doma's schemes, leading to a challenging showdown between them. Through clever strategies and teamwork, Inosuke and Kanao eventually outmaneuver Doma, capitalizing on his vulnerability to Shinobu's poison and finally killing him.

Doma | Strengths, Skills, & Abilities

Doma, as one of the Twelve Kizuki, boasts a formidable array of abilities that make him an exceptionally powerful demon. His combative prowess, coupled with his potent cryokinetic Blood Demon Art, places him among the deadliest adversaries. Doma's strength is exemplified by his effortless defeat of the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, and his previous victory over the late Flower Hashira, Kanae Kocho. He even could face both Inosuke and Kanao, Demon Slayers on par with Hashira, simultaneously without breaking a sweat.

Doma's incredible power extends to his regenerative capabilities, typical of all demons, allowing him to recover from devastating injuries in seconds. He demonstrated this ability when Akaza punched off the top half of his head, considering it a glancing blow. Furthermore, he swiftly neutralized Shinobu's deadly Wisteria poison attacks and developed immunity to her poison, showcasing his remarkable reactive adaptation.

One of Doma's unique attributes is his clinical apathy, rendering him incapable of experiencing emotions. Paradoxically, this detachment gives him a distinct advantage, allowing him to analyze situations without emotional interference. His keen intellect becomes apparent as he skillfully deduces his opponents' abilities and strategies. Moreover, his exceptional memory and ability to manipulate his followers for over a century underscore his intelligence.

In terms of physical attributes, Doma's durability is extraordinary, with his assimilation of Muzan's blood granting him an exceptionally sturdy body. His speed and reflexes are inhuman, and he moves so quickly that he often appears to teleport. Notably, he managed to outpace Shinobu, the fastest Hashira he encountered, and even decapitated her before she could react. Doma's stamina and endurance are seemingly limitless, allowing him to endure relentless attacks without displaying discomfort or pain.

Beyond his physical and mental prowess, Doma possesses supernatural abilities, such as extrasensory perception, enabling him to detect threats outside the realm of normal perception. This acute sensory perception renders sneak attacks ineffective against him.

Doma | Weapon

Doma uses a Tessen as his main weapon. These are Japanese fans that have been weaponized or designed for use in battles, just like that used by Avatar Kiyoshi from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Doma’s fans are golden, with green ribbons and have engravings on them that look like lotuses. They are very sharp and fit his style of fighting as they can cut and slash like swords while making huge gusts of wind. They have also been shown to be very strong, as they have survived many sword cuts and strikes without breaking.

Doma | Blood Demon Art

Doma wields potent cryokinesis through his Blood Demon Art. He can spontaneously generate ice and frost from his own body, exerting precise control over these elements. This mastery allows him to unleash formidable ice techniques. Due to the extreme cold, his ice is particularly lethal when inhaled, swiftly causing the victim's lung cells to die, resulting in rapid suffocation.

Doma's proficiency extends to crafting diverse ice creations, including frost lotuses, stalagmites, icy air clouds, and even miniature ice clones. These clones can replicate his techniques, enhancing his combat prowess. Additionally, Doma can employ the ice as extra appendages, such as creating ice vines while engaging in combat. In battles, he melds his cryokinetic talents with Tessenjutsu, augmenting his fan strikes with icy enhancements. Doma's preferred creations include frost lotuses and crystal-like ice shards, amplifying his threat on the battlefield.

Doma | The Monster

As none of the other demons in Demon Slayer embody sadism and power in equal measure as Doma, he definitely is a memorable character. Seeing Doma in the series adds great intensity to the general plotline, leaving fans both awestruck and horrified. But amidst it all, I’d leave you with a quote from Doma himself:

“Life is precious,  treasure it.”
