Out of Demon Slayer’s anime and manga run, the Kidnappers’ Bog Arc remains its shortest arc, with only two episodes in the anime and four chapters in the manga. Despite its length, it tells an important story and acts as the beginning of another phase in the Demon Slayer storyline.

Arrival | Disappearances
Tanjiro suits up and prepares to leave for his first mission. Urokodaki gives him some final words of advice and educates him more about his uniform and sword, especially the myth about black sword wielders. Urokodaki then gives him a brown box to carry Nezuko in. He watches as Tanjiro walks out of sight.
Upon his arrival at his destination, Tanjiro sees a dejected-looking man named Kazumi. His bride-to-be was taken away by someone unknown. He overheard some people gossiping about the recent disappearances and asked Kazumi to take him to the spot where the girl vanished.
Tanjiro inspects the spot and detects the presence of a demon. He keeps investigating and tracking the scent of the demon. This leads him to a compound where a young girl is getting ready for bed. As she walks, some dark fluid follows closely behind her. Someone watches her from darkness. As she closed her eyes to sleep, her bed was engulfed by the dark fluid and two monstrous hands came out, covering her mouth as she tried to scream.
Investigation | Battle
She is swiftly sucked in, leaving no trace. Tanjiro gets a feeling that something is amiss, but sees nothing. Drawing his sword, he dug into the ground where the demon’s scent was strongest. As a black fluid gushed out, he saw a woman and pulled her unconscious body from the mud. Almost immediately, a demon with three horns, a Swamp Demon, surfaced and disappeared, gritting its teeth.
Suddenly, three demons appear from the ground and try to pull him in. He leaps and slices off their hands. The demons reappear and one the apparent leader brandishes his collection of personal belongings of every sixteen year old girl he’s devoured. The demons start popping out and attacking Tanjiro one after the other. Nezuko quickly comes to his rescue, leaving the Swamp Demon stunned.
Tanjiro restrains her from chasing after the demons. He willingly walks into the mud, entering the demon’s domain. He sees the clothes of some humans floating around and becomes infuriated. Two of the demons come at him, gritting their teeth and baring their fangs. He uses Water Breathing Sixth Form as it requires no footing to create a whirlpool and slash the demons to pieces.
Nezuko fights with the third demon on the surface, as Tanjiro makes his way up. As the demon tries to dive back into the earth, Nezuko stops it. As it regains momentum, it tries to drill into her face, but Tanjiro comes to her rescue. He inquires about a demon named Muzan and notices how frightened the demon becomes at the mention of that name. It refuses to talk and tries to escape, so Tanjiro beheads it and tends to Nezuko, who is already asleep. After the battle, Tanjiro waves to Kazumi and leaves the town.
The Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji
A Kasugai crow flies in and informs Tanjiro of his next mission at Asakusa. He arrived there at night and saw that Asakusa was a more culturally advanced city with taller buildings and rail buses. He goes to a cart to get dinner and rest for a bit. While eating his dinner of udon with grilled cheese, he detects the smell of a demon coming from the town. Leaving Nezuko behind, he ran towards the smell, making his way across a road filled with people. He finds Muzan Kibutsuji, holding a child who called him “father.”
Tanjiro is completely stupefied at the sight of Muzan Kibutsuji and his wife and child, who are oblivious to him being a demon. In a swift moment, Muzan nicks a passerby with his nails, and the man causes a scene, as he transforms into a demon and tries to eat his wife.
Kidnapper’s Bog Arc | Analysis & Review
Storyline | 8/10
The kidnapper’s bog arc introduces a sense of suspense and intrigue into the overall series, as it tells of Tanjiro’s first actual mission as a demon slayer. As he investigates the disappearances in the village and encounters the demons responsible for them, he also gets to see what Urokodaki meant when he taught him about Blood Demon Arts, which are supernatural abilities of demons.
It also introduces Nezuko’s will and a touch of her abilities in combating demons.. Her fighting on the side of Tanjiro instead of the demon proves that, not only is she capable of suppressing her hunger for blood, she is also a dependable comrade in the fight against demons.
The action sequences are exhilarating as ever, with beautifully choreographed fight scenes that highlight each character’s strengths and weaknesses. It also introduces a different set piece. Something other than the village setting we’ve gotten accustomed to in the previous arc.
Character Development | 7/10
This arc shows considerable growth in Nezuko’s character and abilities. Urokodaki has taught her that all humans are friends and all demons who bring harm to humans are to be killed. She takes that instruction to heart and lashes out with all her considerable strength to defend the same humans that her brother is fighting to save.
Tanjiro on the other hand, has little growth to note in the two episodes of this arc. The only notable difference I can see in him is his ability to adapt to a new environment and conditions while still being able to fight and kill demons.
Also, it introduced a character we’ve only heard about in the previous arc, Muzan Kibutsuji. His face became known at the end of this arc, but the very short interaction he had with Tanjiro left an indelible mark on Tanjiro and the viewers.
Sounds And Music | 8/10
The sound effects are clear and loud, making the clashing of swords and the weird noises that the creatures make feel very real. This is especially true when the third of the swamp demons grits its teeth noisily. It gives a different kind of vibe that I could feel in my body, almost like sending some kind of shrill chills to my teeth. The voice acting here is also impeccable and you could very well feel the emotions that the characters give.
The opening and closing themes are the same as those of the previous arc and are, still, excellent. But, sometimes I find myself just skipping through the opening theme song and moving to the main action. Now, this could be due to the anticipation of “what’s next?” or because I didn’t want to waste time on such a recurring element. Who knows?
Themes | 7/10
This arc emphasizes trust. This can be seen when Tanjiro left Nezuko alone to fight a demon while she also safeguarded Kazumi and the lady he saved in the bog. Before he did that, he questioned whether or not she was capable of holding back her urges, but decided to put that trust in her. He also had to trust in his own abilities while in the Swamp Demon’s lair.
Art and Animation | 9/10
The fluidity and clarity in the graphics of this arc is impeccable. Although it cannot be compared to that of some anime that were released this year, it is safe to say that the graphics of these two episodes were at the peak of their year of production.
Even though the graphics of the anime were pretty crisp, it wasn’t exactly perfect and gave off vibes of being hand drawn. Maybe some corrections were made by software, but that’s only to be expected of drawings, as they’re not meant to be entirely perfect.
Overall Rating | 8/10
This is Demon Slayer’s shortest arc ever, both in the manga and in the anime, but that’s not to say it wasn’t interesting or action packed. I got to see Tanjiro in real action for the first time, torture a demon for information, and finish off three demons. All this from a boy that, just a few episodes ago, couldn’t even bring himself to kill even one.
