Who is Mitsuri Kanroji?
Mitsuri Kanroji is one of the supporting characters in Demon Slayer manga and anime series. She is the Love Hashira and one of the strongest fighters in the Demon Slayer Corps. Unlike other Hashiras or members of the Demon Slayer Corps who are on a path of vengeance, Mitsuri became a member of the Demon Slayer Corps to find a husband. She becomes Obanai Iguro’s crush and almost completes her goal.
Mitsuri Kanroji | History
Remarkably, her extraordinary strength emerged during her early childhood when, at just 14 months old, she effortlessly lifted a 33-pound picking stone to assist her pregnant mother in the kitchen. Her exceptional physical prowess was evident as she even defeated sumo wrestlers in arm wrestling matches as a child.
At the age of 17, she faced a series of failed marriage interviews, where men rejected her based on her unconventional hair color and her strength, deeming her "ridiculous." Frustrated by societal expectations, she succumbed to conformity by dyeing her hair black and suppressing her innate strength and appetite for a period. However, this façade wore thin as she grew weary of hiding her true self.
Despite her efforts to conform, she met someone who fell for her fake appearances and was willing to marry her. However, consumed by self-doubt, she ultimately called off the marriage, realizing that living a lie was not a path she could endure. Instead, she made the courageous choice to join the Demon Slayer Corps. Under the mentorship of Kyojuro Rengoku, she honed her skills and gradually unleashed her true potential, ultimately rising to the rank of Hashira.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Appearance
Mitsuri is undoubtedly the prettiest female character in the Demon Slayer anime and manga series. The 19-year-old boasts a distinctive appearance. Her hair extends to either waist or hip length, sporting an eye-catching blend of pink with neon-green hues. She styles her hair in three voluminous braids, accompanied by five shorter strands that frame her face like bangs. Her striking features include bright green eyes adorned with lengthy lashes, along with a tiny mole gracing each of her cheeks.
Mitsuri wears a customized Demon Slayer Corps Uniform, distinguished by a violet tint, paired with a white haori. Notably, she opts for a modified uniform, with the chest area left unbuttoned. Instead of the traditional Hakama, she opts for a short skirt. Completing her ensemble are a pair of lime-green striped socks, complemented by navy blue thigh-high socks. Her footwear choice consists of pink-lined boots, which feature sandals for a distinctive touch.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Personality
Mitsuri Kanroji is simply a bag of emotions. She embodies a vibrant, emotional, and warm-hearted persona. She frequently showers people with compliments in her thoughts, showcasing her affectionate nature. While she may act shy and easily become flustered, her kindness remains a constant. This is especially evident in her strong bond with Obanai.
Beneath her gentle exterior lies a resolute spirit, unyielding in her determination to serve as a demon slayer and slay demons. Beyond her emotional depth, she occasionally acts like a child, often acting in a Zenitsu-like manner. Despite that, her caring nature and enthusiasm is always evident.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Motivations
Since childhood, Mitsuri had shown exceptional strength, a huge appetite, and hair colors that couldn’t be considered as normal. Unfortunately, these were reasons why men always turned her down and refused to marry her. She became depressed and decided to change all that made her special. In order to do that, she curbed her eating habits, dyed her hair black, and always feigned weakness like other girls. This led to a prospective husband.
But, self-doubt wouldn’t let her be. After a series of thoughts on having to live the rest of her life pretending to be someone that she’s not, she decided to continue her search for men stronger than herself, so she could at least feel protected. Her search brought her to the Demon Slayer Corps, where she came across a number of strong fellows. After learning that the Hashiras were the strongest of the lot, she worked hard until she was promoted to the Hashira level and started developing feelings for Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Relationships
Owing to her unique and friendly personality, Mitsuri Kanroji could easily be seen as overbearing. It’s especially clear in how she always tries to be courteous and tries to make friends with everyone that comes her way. This was evident in the Swordsmith Village when she tried to speak to Genya Shinazugawa, who only shunned her, and she then came running to Tanjiro to report to him.
While she relates with all the other Hashiras and even other members of the Demon Slayer Corps, she doesn’t always give any input whenever required. She leads an easy life whenever she’s around those whom she loves or respects, and only sees beauty even in the scars of others.
Her relationship with Shinobu Kocho is like that of an adopted sibling. They are both very close, being the only female Hashiras. They also share secrets; Mitsuri teaches Shinobu Kocho how to make western dishes, while Shinobu often acts as her mentor and offers advice on various matters.
While her parents and siblings were unnamed, it is evident that she was greatly loved by them. They had no problem feeding her humongous appetite and never made her feel odd or unloved because of her hair color or strength.
But her most important relationship is with Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira. While much of their relationship isn’t told in the anime yet, it is evident that he is her singular love interest. At some point in the future, she declares her love for him and asks him to marry her.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Strengths And Abilities
Exceptional Physical Prowess: Even at a young age, Mitsuri demonstrates extraordinary physical strength. She helped her pregnant mother in the kitchen by lifting a 33-pound picking stone when she was just 14 months old, demonstrating her extraordinary strength. Because of her formidable physique, she can fight demons and other formidable foes head-on.
Whip–Katana Proficiency: Mitsuri uses a whip-katana, a long, thin sword with a flexible blade that looks like a whip. This expertly crafted weapon allows her to hit targets further away than a normal sword would. Due to her skill with the whip-katana, Mitsuri is able to execute attacks with fluidity and accuracy, striking in a variety of directions or delivering many blows to a single victim.
Flexibility: Her exceptional flexibility is crucial to her ability to use the whip-katana successfully. This agility enables her to not only wield her sword without causing harm to herself, but also to make acrobatic and dynamic moves during battle. Her physical adaptability makes her a dynamic and unpredictable fighter.
Endurance And Durability: Mitsuri has shown extraordinary endurance and stamina in battle. She is resilient enough to keep battling even after taking significant damage from demons' strong strikes.
Breathing Technique: Mitsuri Kanroji uses the Love Breathing Technique, which she created due to her inability to properly harness and learn Fire Breathing Techniques from Kyojuro Rengoku. As a clone of the Fire Breathing Technique, the Love Breathing is equally a formidable breathing technique and it helps Mitsuri harness her strengths and weapon properly.
Demon Slayer Mark: Mitsuri Kanroji is the only Hashira that has the Demon Slayer Mark. These marks are like odd spots on the skin, similar birthmarks or scars. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the face or other visible parts of the body. Activating this mark would grant the user exceptional abilities and fortitude to go beyond their human limits to do things they’d not originally be able to do.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Weapon
Unlike other Demon Slayers who use standard katanas, Mitsuri's weapon is an exceptionally long, thin, and flexible katana that closely resembles a whip. It was crafted by Tecchin Tecchikawahara, the chief of the Swordsmith Village.
This whip-katana extends her reach well beyond that of an average swordsman. This enables her to execute attacks that curve and twist through her targets, allowing for multiple strikes to various areas or repeated hits to the same location. The katana itself is a striking shade of pink, and its handguard takes the form of a four-leaf clover, featuring pink leaves with golden borders. Additionally, the words "Destroyer of Demons" are elegantly engraved on one side of the handguard.
Accompanying her katana, Mitsuri carries a standard-sized, traditionally shaped sword sheath. Given her katana's unique form, Mitsuri employs a precise folding technique to sheathe it properly.
Mitsuri Kanroji | Symbolism And Themes
The character of Mitsuri Kanroji does more than slay demons and look pretty. There are a number of symbolic notions to her presence and persona in the anime.
She shows that there is more that can drive people to become strong or achieve life goals. Unlike other Hashiras and Demon Slayers who joined the Corps out of vengeance or were victims of demon attack, Mitsuri Kanroji is the only member of the Demon Slayer Corps that joined to find love.
In a world of rigid, stern and principled people, Mitsuri serves as a conduit of ease and compassion, as she still is the friendliest Hashira. She continues to be herself no matter what the situation calls for. During Tanjiro’s trial, she is the only Hashira that felt great pity for him and wished he wouldn’t be killed.
On a last note, she is undoubtedly Demon Slayer’s prettiest female character. She embodies all the stereotypical feminine charms (colorful hair, slightly exposed cleavage, a weak feminine approach and friendliness, etc.) that you would normally see in a Shonen heroine. But, irrespective of how feminine and weak she might seem, she is a very skilled and formidable opponent against demons.
