Who is Frank Lloyd Wright?

Born in 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright was a genius, a man with a vision, and one of the greatest architects of all time. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Wright started his rich career in the firm of Adler and Sulivan where he perfected his craft and then opened his own office in 1893. That’s where the magic began. 

Throughout his career, Frank Lloyd Wright designed approximately 1,000 buildings, with around 400 of them being constructed, some of which became cultural phenomena and awe-inspiring attractions that remain widely popular today. His signature way of blending architecture with nature pioneered a movement known as "organic architecture". That’s not all, Wright also introduced the Prairie style, emphasizing horizontal structures over the increasingly popular vertical designs of the time.

He not only set the foundation for the buildings themselves, but he also paved the way for many upcoming architects. His innovative techniques and visionary ideals pushed the boundaries of what was deemed possible in architecture with iconic buildings like Fallingwater and the Robie House standing as testaments to his masterful work.

Fallingwater is the proudest representation of organic architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s undisputed masterpiece, and a building you simply cannot help but love. By blending nature with architecture, it has stood as Pennsylvania’s treasure for nearly 90 years and is one of the most beautiful and should I say, underrated, landmarks in the USA.

Located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania this modern 9,300 square feet palace opened to the public in 1964 and, with hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly, has been a huge attraction ever since. Plus, the building was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list, proving that it’s indeed a sight to behold. 

And guess what? Like always, LEGO has managed to capture its essence perfectly and offer fans the chance to enrich their homes with the fascinating beauty of the Kaufmann family's former weekend retreat. In addition to being a wonderful decor piece, the LEGO Fallingwater set offers a challenging building experience, providing an enjoyable way to spend quality time with fellow fans.

Why We Like It

What I find fascinating is that even Edgar J. Kaufmann himself wasn't initially aware of the stunning, nature-infused masterpiece that Fallingwater would become, despite it being designed for his family. While they envisioned a house positioned to face a waterfall, Frank Lloyd Wright had a far grander vision in mind, once again showcasing his extraordinary genius.

And while there is no doubt that Mr. Wright did an amazing job, I also have to give credit to Adam Reed Tucker, who designed this marvelous Fallingwater LEGO model. After all, with its ideal size of 10 inches (25.6 cm) wide, 7 inches (17.78 cm) tall, and 6 inches (15.24 cm) deep it will surely grab the attention of everyone in the room. 

2. LEGO [Architecture] - Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum LEGO Set

Back in 1943, an avid art collector named Solomon R. Guggenheim decided that his collection deserved the best care possible and sought out one of the greatest architects of all time to design a museum that would leave a lasting impact on New York City. And our dear Frank Lloyd Wright did exactly that and everyone who’s seen this museum knows exactly what I’m talking about. 

It took Wright approximately 16 years to create this masterpiece, enduring numerous challenges along the way. With over 700 drafts scratched out and refined, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum finally opened its doors in 1959. On its opening day, a crowd of over 3,000 eagerly awaited entry, ready to be transported into a whole new realm of artistic experience.

Why We Like It

Visiting or even just passing by this museum is an experience in itself, evoking a magical feeling that only architectural wonders like this can. That being said, I think owning a LEGO model of it is a must. The LEGO Solomon R. Guggenheim set brings the beauty of Wright’s creation while adding its own “bricky” charm, making it one of the best unique decorative pieces. Plus, you get the unmatched fun of assembling its 744 pieces, which is a special experience for all LEGO fans. 

What surprised me is that this set includes the eight-story annex tower as well. This not-so-little detail perfectly complements the museum, adding a touch of the 60s era, which is quite beautiful. And, while this is a highly detailed and quite large model, there is another simpler yet equally magnificent one fans can consider getting as well. 

3. LEGO [Architecture] - Solomon Guggenheim Museum

Our Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

This is another Solomon Guggenheim Museum LEGO set, but the variation of this beautiful museum is one I'd recommend for younger fans or LEGO newbies. Why, you ask? Simply because it’s easier to build and still makes for a beautiful decor piece. Plus, its smaller size can be an advantage for those with limited display space.

Why We Like It

Nevertheless, it still wonderfully portrays the Solomon Guggenheim Museum and is not a downgrade in my opinion. Plus, you get an extremely fun booklet that guides you through building this model and provides interesting insights into the museum's architectural significance.

4. LEGO [Architecture] - Imperial Hotel LEGO Set

Our Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

Frank Lloyd Wright’s magic enchanted not only American cities; it traveled far around the world, reaching Japan’s capital. Utilizing his masterful skills, Wright crafted a new version of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, which stood as one of the world’s best for 45 years. 

Wright’s Imperial Hotel represented a significant upgrade over its predecessor, constructed from exotic and durable materials like golden brick and pale Oya stone. He introduced a never-before-seen design, which he described as “an architect’s sincere tribute to a unique nation, a building that respects Oriental tradition, at the same time that it keeps its own individuality as a sympathetic friend on Japanese soil.”

Unfortunately, after surviving many earthquakes and accommodating many high-profile quests, it could not satisfy the needs of the modern world and needed to leave space for its much bigger replacement. Luckily, what makes me happy is that at least portions of this architectural masterpiece have been preserved at the Meiji-mura Architecture Museum in Inuyama—a destination that’s surely a top spot on my bucket list for my Japan trip.

Why We Like It

Now, while I’m planning that trip, I’ve decided to treat myself to the LEGO Imperial Hotel model and enjoy this amazing piece of architecture. Building it was extremely fun as its 1181 pieces gave me a very satisfying challenge that resulted in a majestic 4" (10cm) tall, 11" (28cm) wide, and 9" (24cm) deep LEGO model that now takes the central stage in my Japanese collection.

5. LEGO [Architecture] - Robie House LEGO Set

As arguably the finest representation of Wright’s Prairie style and a structure recognized by the American Institute of Architects as one of the ten most significant buildings of the twentieth century, the Robie House stands as an architectural marvel in which all Americans should take pride.

The Robie House was built in 1910 and had a shaky past, changing owners frequently and narrowly escaping demolition on two occasions, all thanks to Wright's personal intervention. Now, it’s part of the University of Chicago, serving as one of the city’s most beautiful landmarks, and drawing tourists from far and wide to admire its beauty.

Why We Like It

In addition to its wonderful rectangular shape, glass windows, and fantastic Roman brick exterior, its interior is what most people find breathtaking. Typical of Wright’s style, it perfectly blends the house with its natural surroundings while simultaneously giving it the feeling of a home.

While visiting the Robie House is truly unparalleled, the LEGO Robie House set offers a wonderful glimpse of its exterior beauty. The set perfectly portrays this architectural masterpiece, leaving me in awe every time I lay eyes on it. From its iconic horizontal structure to the meticulous details like the precisely lined windows, it feels as though you've shrunk the house and brought it onto your desk.
