The Titans are the main antagonists in Attack on Titan. They are huge, blood-thirsty creatures with only one primal goal – devouring humans. While all are dangerous, there are different types of Titans in size, look, and abilities that pose a different threat to the world.
The Pure Titans are the most common type of Titans known for mindlessly marching through Paradis Island and destroying everything in their path. In the first three seasons, nobody knew what they exactly were and where they came from. And while some information was revealed, their existence still remains one big, creepy mystery.
The History of the Pure Titans in the Anime
The existence of the Titans dates all the way back to two thousand years ago when a young slave named Ymir accidentally stumbled upon an alien creature. This encounter led to her transformation into the very first Titan – the Founding Titan, marking the beginning of Attack on Titan's story.
The Eldian King, who married Ymir, was hungry for power and seized the opportunity to use the Founding Titan to conquer the world. When Ymir Fritz died, the king divided this titan power between their children by making them eat their own mother. Thus, the morbid, two-millennia-long Eldian tradition of inheriting the titan powers began.
This legacy of inheritance ultimately gave rise to the Nine Titans, each possessing unique powers. On the other hand, the origins of the Pure Titans remained a mystery, with the best theory being that, after numerous years had passed, the technologically advanced nation of Marley used scientific methods of creating Pure Titans. And just like the Eldians thousands of years ago, they did it to conquer their enemies.
What Are the Pure Titans in Attack on Titan?
With the injection of a Titan’s spinal fluid, the Eldian people are given the form of enormous creatures known as Pure Titans. These are humanoid creatures with weird-looking bodies, huge heads, and disproportionate extremities. Depending on if they are Abnormals or not, the Titans' height varies between as little as 10 to as big as 50 meters.
When turned into a Pure Titan, the person loses everything that makes them human. They no longer have emotions, can’t think logically, and exist only for destruction. They become mindless monsters with far-from-coordinated movements that make them appear like big babies who are still learning to walk. While they are relatively simple creatures, all these characteristics combined make one intimidating blend of immense power and chaotic unpredictability.
How Do the Pure Titan’s Bodies Function?
When the two Pure Titans, Sawney and Bean, were captured by the Survey Corps and later examined by Hange, a lot of information was revealed. The most important thing that came to light was the fact that when deprived of the sun’s energy, these creatures became lethargic and much less aggressive. This revelation shattered the previous belief that consuming humans was a physiological necessity for them. Instead, it became evident that sunlight was a vital requirement for their existence.
Throughout the whole series, the physiology of the Pure Titan's bodies is never fully revealed. What takes center stage is their astonishing bodies which are extremely strong and possess a remarkable regenerative ability, allowing them to regrow any part of their body. Nevertheless, despite their formidable characteristics, they have one weak spot that the scouts are very familiar with - the back side of their neck.
What Are the Abnormal Titans?
The Abnormal Titans, though physically similar to their Pure counterparts, stand out for their remarkably distinct behavior which makes them a more formidable foe. While the Pure Titans are mindless and driven by their desire to eat humans, the Abnormal Titans show signs of higher intelligence and strategic thinking that guide them in pursuing much bigger goals.
Perfect examples of these Titans are Rod Reiss and Dina Fritz. Their actions showed how the Abnormals can and will focus on a specific target despite having plenty of other options in front of them. Rod Reiss aimed specifically for the walls, while Dina Fritz's main target was eating Grisha's new wife.
Furthermore, the mystery around the Abnormal Titans gets even bigger with the revelation that some of them possess the ability to communicate through speech. A good and messed up example of this phenomenon is Connie's mother, who managed to greet her son while trapped in her Titan form.
The Difference Between Pure Titans and the Nine Titans
The Nine Titans are the strongest ones in the series. They are inherited by a human who can voluntarily transform into his Titan form and consciously control it. The Beast Titan, Jaw Titan, Armored Titan, and all of the others possess powers that are far beyond those of the pure or abnormal ones. They possess powers that can win wars and conquer whole nations.
The ones who transformed into Pure Titans, on the other hand, cannot transform back into a human. As already mentioned, they lose all consciousness that ties them to being a human and become a monster with the simple need to seek out and devour humans. Also, unlike one of the nine, the Pure Titans give a much lower advantage on the battlefield, especially compared to Titans like the Colossal Titan or the Armored Titan.
Furthermore, the Nine Titans prove their superiority over their Pure counterparts when it comes to durability. They can harden their bodies and regenerate at an accelerated rate, making them significantly more resilient in battle. When these attributes are combined with their unique abilities such as flight, swift running on all fours, and martial arts proficiency, it becomes evident that the Nine Titans are the most dominant force in the world.
Final Thoughts on the Pure Titans
Attack on Titan was all about freedom, and the Pure Titans were the exact opposite of that. The Pure Titans, with their scary looks and mindless behavior, served as a harsh reminder of what happened when power went unchecked. With no human traits and a destructive mindset, they posed a constant danger to the people of Paradis Island.
On top of that, Abnormal Titans, a subset of Pure Titans, added complexity to the narrative with their higher intelligence and strategic thinking, making them an even more formidable challenge for the Survey Corps.
In the end, the Titans served as a reflection of the dark aspects of human nature, something that became very apparent when their origin was revealed. The act of transforming humans into Pure Titans with the intent of annihilating another nation showed a really disturbing side of human behavior. And the most unsettling aspect of all was the ease with which the Marleyans undertook this horrifying practice.
"Titans. I've seen the ocean. I've seen mountains. I've seen people. So many people. But I've never seen anything like them." - Armin Arlert
