Unlike villains in other anime, the Cursed Spirits in Jujutsu Kaisen often leave an indelible mark on the viewers. They either play integral parts in the character development of one or more characters or provide some level of comic relief.
While Jujutsu Kaisen has presented a lot of Cursed Spirits, I’d focus on one very strong hot-headed one named Jogo.
Jogo | Profile
Name: Jogo
Gender: Male
Species: Cursed Spirit
Grade: Special Grade
Anime Debut: Episode 5
Manga Debut: Chapter 10
Voice Actor: Shigeru Chiba
Who is Jogo?
Jogo is a primary antagonist in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga series. He is classified as a Special Grade Cursed Spirit and, just like his allies, believes that the earth would be a better place without humans, and is hell-bent on getting rid of them. He is Hanami’s only friend in Kenjaku’s group, and he was killed by Sukuna, the King of Curses in the Shibuya Incident Arc of the Jujutsu Kaisen storyline.
Jogo | Appearance
Jogo had a distinct hybrid look, combining human features with those of a Cursed Spirit. When compared to his allies Mahito and Hanami, Jogo seemed much smaller than them as he moved with the slow gait of an elderly man. It was common to see him propped up on a cane, and his slouched back gave him away as a hunchback.
Jogo's head looked a lot like Mount Fuji, but with a twist: it resembled a volcano.
On top of his head, where a volcano crater would open, his skin turned a spectral hue of pale gray, gradually becoming brown. Just as unusual were Jogo's facial features: he possessed a single enormous cyclopean eye, two narrow holes on either side of his skull that served as ears, and his teeth were a striking shade of black. Every time Jogo became angry, he would stuff large corks into his ears. When he was very mad, the corks would break out and a fireball would shoot out of his skull.
As for his clothing, Jogo loved to keep things simple. He wore all black, including baggy shirts with sleeves that fell just below the elbow, black pants, and black shoes. Then, to provide a dash of contrast to his foreboding aura, he wore a white scarf and his signature cape, which was speckled with yellow dots.
Jogo | Personality
Just like his allies, Jogo has a strong sense of pride and arrogance. He also shares in the belief that Cursed Spirits represent the true essence of humanity (or are the true humans). He also has a deep conviction that the eradication of all humans is necessary to purify the earth, leaving the Cursed Spirits as the sole occupants.
Due to his arrogance, he holds a disdainful view toward Cursed Technique users, humans, and sorcerers. This leads him to underestimate Satoru Gojo, despite the wide acclaim on Satoru’s strength. However, his brief encounter with Satoru put a great deal of fear in him and shattered his confidence.
Among all things, Jogo is a hypocritical character. This is seen in how emotionally attached he is to his allies, how affected he gets by their deaths, and how mercilessly and callously he takes the lives of multiple innocent humans. Lastly, he is a pretentious and ill-tempered character, especially in how he acts all high and mighty in Gojo’s presence, under the assumption that Gojo would not exert his full potential while being surrounded by “weak” individuals.
Jogo | Motivations
It is common knowledge that Cursed Spirits are created from the actions or emotions of humans, such as fear, hate, or actions stemming from any strong emotions, and Jogo is no exception. He was created from the fear people have of volcanoes and fire-related disasters.
Just like his allies, Jogo sees the human populace as weak and as mere impurities that stand in the way of having a perfect world. Hence, they should be annihilated.
Jogo | In the Story
The first nine chapters and four episodes of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga series gave no definitive insights into Satoru Gojo’s abilities or fighting prowess as much as Jogo’s debut did. After being told that his strength was roughly about half of Sukuna’s, Jogo felt confident enough to take on the rumored strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer, a confrontation that gave viewers a glimpse of Gojo’s strength and techniques.
Also, this confrontation served as a spectacle and lesson to Yuji Itadori. This was where he learned about Domain Expansion and its counter-move, the Domain Amplification, which serves to displace a weaker Domain with a stronger one. This confrontation, however, planted a great deal of fear in Jogo and made him realize that Satoru is truly not a mere sorcerer.
Moving on, Jogo had the opportunity to confront Satoru Gojo again in the Shibuya Incident Arc, during their plot to seal the sorcerer. This time, he didn’t do it alone, as he stood with Choso, Mahito, and Hanami, all to keep Satoru busy till the Prison Realm was ready.
But in the ensuing battle, Jogo lost Hanami when the cursed spirit fell victim to Satoru’s trap and was crushed by Satoru’s Infinity. Devastated and stricken with fear, Jogo fled the scene. A short while later, he rejoins Mahito and Choso in the fight against Satoru, ultimately leading to the sorcerer getting sealed in the Prison Realm.
After Satoru had been sealed, Jogo goes in search of Itadori who had just been beaten to a pulp by Choso, but first meets and burns Maki and Nanami. He then finds Itadori and feeds him ten of Sukuna’s fingers, bringing the King of Curses to life. After a brief discussion and dare, Sukuna and Jogo engage in a battle that destroys a large portion of Shibuya, especially after Jogo uses a huge comet-like ball of fire to kill Sukuna. This attack failed and Sukuna killed him.
Jogo | Relationships
Jogo navigates a complicated network of relationships that mirror his motivations, role, and conflicts in the story of cursed spirits versus humans. His relationships, particularly with other cursed spirits, humans, and Jujutsu Sorcerers play a pivotal role in understanding his character and the overall storyline of the story. Here is an analysis of Jogo’s key relationships.
With Other Cursed Spirits
Jogo has a strong, almost familial connection with Dagon, Hanami, and Mahito. They all share a common objective: to eliminate humanity and establish a world where cursed spirits reign supreme. Their relationship is not only strategic, but it also demonstrates a strong sense of mutual respect and camaraderie, which is evident in their interactions and planning sessions.
With Suguru Geto
Like the other unregistered special grade curses, Jogo aligns with the sorcerer, Suguru Geto (who is later revealed to be possessed by Kenjaku). This relationship is based solely on practicality, as they both share a common enemy in mankind and the Jujutsu society. While Jogo recognizes and respects Geto’s abilities and strategic thinking, he is skeptical of his ultimate goal and devotion to their shared convictions.
With Jujutsu Sorcerers
Jogo has had encounters with a few sorcerers, but his most notable are with Yuji and Gojo. While he harbors a deep hatred for both of them, he views Satoru Gojo as the primary obstacle to their ultimate goal, and Yuji as both a threat and a valuable tool, especially as he’s Sukuna’s host.
With Sukuna
Jogo’s relationship with Sukuna is intriguing. Initially, Jogo seeks to ally with Sukuna, acknowledging his influence and strength as potentially crucial to accomplishing their objectives. But seeing as Sukuna’s interests are purely selfish, he ends up killing Jogo as a show of power. Their relationship ends up serving to highlight the power dynamics and ambitions within the world of cursed spirits, and the hierarchies that extend beyond human relationships.
Jogo | Skills And Abilities
Refined Speed And Reflexes
Jogo's incredible speed enables him to swiftly move through the battlefield, catching opponents off guard and launching a relentless assault. His impressive reflexes perfectly match his incredible speed, turning him into a force of unstoppable destruction. He also possesses exceptional agility and speed, allowing him to outmaneuver opponents effortlessly.
Intense Durability
Jogo, being a special grade cursed spirit, has an impressive resilience to physical damage. This enables him to endure powerful attacks without much difficulty. His ability to manipulate cursed energy provides additional protection, bolstering his durability against any potential harm.
General Skill
Jogo possessed remarkable intelligence and an abundance of energy, surpassing even other special grades. Kenjaku believed that Jogo's strength was comparable to having eight or nine of Sukuna's fingers. Although he couldn't stand up to formidable opponents like Sukuna and Satoru Gojo, Jogo still surpassed the majority of sorcerers and other special grade curses.
Jogo's mere presence could cause non-sorcerers to go up in flames while stepping into his domain meant certain death for Jujutsu Sorcerers. During the Shibuya incident, Jogo demonstrated his power by swiftly overpowering formidable sorcerers such as Nanami, Maki, and Naobito, causing significant harm in split seconds with his impressive speed and strength. Although he couldn't match Sukuna's full power, Jogo's maximum technique was still recognized as a potential threat by Sukuna.
Jogo impressed Sukuna as one of the toughest adversaries he had encountered. As a testament to his immense strength, even Kenjaku expressed a strong interest in absorbing Jogo to acquire his technique.
Jujutsu
Cosmic Cursed Energy
Jogo had an exceptional amount of cursed energy, even for a special grade, that it was said to be on par with approximately nine of Sukuna's fingers. Sorcerers like Satoru and Naobito immediately recognized the immense power erupting from him, indicating that he possessed extraordinary abilities. He heavily relies on his cursed technique during battles, using it relentlessly without ever tiring himself. He also demonstrates his expertise in Jujutsu and cursed energy reserves by effortlessly creating a domain and using powerful techniques.
Battle Techniques
Karekichu – Ember Insects
Using this technique, Jogo could conjure small insect curses from the volcano hole in his head. These insects possessed stingers that produced an eerie and piercing sound upon contact, followed by a fiery explosion.
Disaster Flames
Jogo had a volcanic-related skill that enabled him to generate cursed flames that were extremely concentrated. In addition to being able to make flames or shoot radiant heat from his palms, he was also able to manifest small volcanic holes in the surroundings that allowed his very strong beams to be released.
Gokunoban: In – Supreme Art: Meteor
Using this technique, Jogo was able to create a massive blazing meteor which he could then throw at his intended target. A significant chunk of Shibuya was completely obliterated as a result of the collision, which caused enormous devastation. Even Sukuna stated that he would not have been able to escape the impact of Maximum: Meteor without suffering any injuries.
Domain Techniques
Domain Expansion: Gaikan Tecchisen – Coffin Of The Iron Mountain
Jogo's Domain Expansion creates a volcano that he can control with ease. Even a sorcerer of moderate skill would be incinerated upon contact, and the volcanic rocks within the area are a formidable and unavoidable arsenal.
Anti-Domain: Ryoiki Ten’en – Domain Amplification
This increases the cursed energy that Jogo possesses into an aura that is capable of carrying a hit that cannot be missed. It can also be used to neutralize an opponent's domain.
Jogo | Doused
While Jogo’s death reminds me of Gojo’s imprisonment and the impending gore that’s to be expected in Jujutsu Kaisen’s third season, I’m pretty sure I’m speaking for all of us when I say we’re going to miss him. His character also seems to perfectly complement that of his allies, for while Dagon’s element is water, Hanami’s is plants, while Jogo’s is fire.
But until I decide which character to write on, Sayonara.
