“Naruto, let’s show them our power.”
- Kurama
In the Naruto anime and manga series, the Tailed Beasts are powerful creatures made of chakra. There are nine of them, each with a different number of tails, from the One-Tailed Shukaku to the Nine-Tailed Kurama. These beasts are feared for their immense power and are often used as weapons in wars as part of shinobi known as jinchuriki, lending them their strength.
So, what makes these beasts special, and what are their unique abilities? Let’s find out!
What are the Tailed Beasts in Naruto?
The Tailed Beasts in Naruto have origins that trace back long before the main storyline of the series. Around a thousand years ago, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, known as the Sage of Six Paths, used the chakra of the Ten-Tails and divided it into nine parts, creating nine different Tailed Beasts varieties.
These beasts each have unique powers and appearances, often resembling real or mythological animals, and possess a varying number of tails ranging from one to nine. Most notably, their enormous chakra reserves enable them to use powerful techniques like the Tailed Beast Ball, along with unmatched physical abilities and telepathy.
What is a Jinchuriki?
A jinchuriki is a powerful shinobi who has a Tailed Beast sealed inside them. Not everyone is suited to become a jinchuriki, as factors like personal strengths, compatibility with the beast, and the effectiveness of the seal all play a role. When these conditions are met, the ninja gains huge chakra reserves and can harness the beast's powers.
The stronger the bond a jinchuriki forms with their Tailed Beast, the greater the potential for unlocking unparalleled powers. For example, Naruto’s kindness and determination to befriend Kurama—who was initially very reserved—were key in accessing the full extent of the Nine-Tails' powers. With these powers, this duo defeated many of Naruto’s strongest villains.
“The Fourth Hokage entrusted me to Naruto, we became friends and now he’s able to use my Chakra, the Fourth sealed me into Naruto to take you down.” - Kurama to Tobi
Shukaku | The One-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Bunpuku, Gaara, Obito Uchiha
- Type of animal: Tanuki
Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast, is one of the first Tailed Beasts introduced in the Naruto series with its jinchuriki being none other than the ill-tempered Gaara who later became a key figure in the story. Shukaku, having been mistreated by humans, developed a tense and unpleasant demeanor, which did not go well with Gaara’s goals. However, as Gaara and Shukaku grew more in sync, the Tailed Beast's powers were fully realized.
As a resident of the Village Hidden in the Sand, Shukaku’s abilities were closely tied to sand. It not only possessed sand-based powers but also expertly manipulated it, complementing Gaara’s own skills to defeat numerous foes. Additionally, Shukaku could perform powerful sealing techniques and demonstrated remarkable resilience to various attacks, proving to be a reliable combat partner.
Matatabi | The Two-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Yugito Nii
- Type of animal: Bakeneko
Although Matatabi's role in the series is relatively minor, its story offers a compelling look at the nature of both humans and Tailed Beasts, proving that they are inherently unfriendly. This affectionate cat-like beast with a body of blue flames was originally part of the Hidden Leaf Village before being sold to the Hidden Cloud Village where it continued to serve the goal of peace among the villages.
Aside from being a very respectful Tailed Beast, Matatabi possessed abilities that allowed her to best many opponents. Her Fire Release techniques, combined with her unnatural speed and the ability to merge with other Tailed Beasts, allowed her to truly excel in combat. However, her jinchuriki, Yugito Nii, was not strong enough to resist the Akatsuki, who captured Matatabi easily and used her powers for their Ten-Tails reawakening objective.
Isobu | The Three-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Rin, Karatachi Yagura
- Type of animal: Turtle
Isobu is yet another Tailed Beast that belonged to the Leaf Village before being sold. This time, it was the Hidden Mist Village who reinforced their ranks with a tailed beast and sealed it in Rin, Kakashi and Obito’s dear friend. After the shinobi sacrificed herself to stop a war between villages, Isobu was transferred to the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura.
Isobu is a turtle-like creature that specializes in Water Release techniques and can create powerful waves for both offensive and defensive purposes. Additionally, it can use Space-Time ninjutsu, adding an element of unpredictability to its combat abilities. Nevertheless, despite these strengths, the Akatsuki were prepared for Isobu’s tricks and successfully sealed them after Deidara and Tobi captured the beast.
Son Goku | The Four-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Roshi
- Type of animal: Monkey
Not to be confused with one of the most iconic anime characters, the Son Goku in Naruto is the Fourth-Tailed Beast, which has the amazing-looking appearance of a badass monkey inspired by the mythological Sun Wukong.
Son Goku was an honorable beast who shared a strong bond with Roshi, his jinchuriki with whom he won many battles. Later in the series, after Naruto merged all of the beasts, it helped him as well, landing the Uzumaki boy chakra to perform a very powerful version of the Rasengan – the Sage Art: Lava Release Rasenshuriken.
The Four-Tails is undoubtedly the most skilled Taijutsu user among all nine Tailed Beasts, showing amazing agility and strength in hand-to-hand combat. Additionally, it was well-versed in using Fire and Earth techniques, which allowed it to summon Lava Release attacks such as the Flower-Fruit Mountain and the Monkey Flame.
Kokuo | The Five-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Han
- Type of animal: Horse-Dolphin mix
Coming from Village Hidden in the Stone, Kokuo stands out for both its horse-dolphin appearance and unique kekkei genkai. With its vast chakra reserves and powerful physique, Kokuo could use the Horn Breaking combat technique to ram enemies with great force, even challenging the Eight-Tails. Additionally, Kokuo nearly defeated Obito, managing to escape his control briefly and making a surprising attempt to strike him.
Furthermore, Kokuo could manipulate both Water and Fire nature transformations to use Boil Release, a steam-based technique. This power allowed the beast to heat its own chakra or that of its jinchuriki to a boiling point, significantly boosting their strength. However, not much is known about this Tailed Beast as it played a minor role in the series and was not fond of humans, which is why it chose to escape into the forests after the Fourth Great Ninja War ended.
Saiken | The Six-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Utakata
- Type of animal: Slug
With its slug-like appearance and slimy body, the Six-Tails was arguably the most unusual-looking of the Tailed Beasts. However, its remarkable resilience makes it incredibly valuable in battle, as it can endure various types of attacks, even from powerful creatures like Kurama.
In terms of attacking capabilities, Saiken could use Water Release techniques, including the Water Release: Starch Syrup Capturing Field, which effectively traps enemies. Moreover, Saiken and its jinchuriki’s Soap Bubble Ninjutsu proved as a versatile technique that could trap enemies, explode on impact, or serve as a way of transportation.
Chomei | The Seven-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Fū
- Type of animal: Kabutomushi
Apart from its appearance, which strongly resembles that of a rhinoceros beetle, what makes Chomei unique is that it was part of the Hidden Waterfall village – a place that despite not being important to Naruto’s story, was once considered important by Hashirama, who sold Chomei to its people.
Unlike the other Tailed Beasts, Chomei could fly and use its wings to release Scale Powder, which served as a useful distraction for enemies. To defend against shinobi with chakra-stealing techniques, the beast often created a Cocoon that only a chakra blade can penetrate. And, true to its rhinoceros beetle-like nature, Chomei also utilized its horn effectively for attacking.
Gyuki | The Eight-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Blue B, Killer Bee, Obito Uchiha
- Type of animal: Ushi-oni
To attack this beast and its jinchuriki you need to be a fool, ya fool! Introduced in the later part of Naruto Shippuden, Guyki and Killer Bee quickly became fan-favorite characters, not only for their strength but for their vibrant personalities, too.
This massive beast, with an ox-like head, a muscular body, and eight tails resembling octopus tentacles, resided in the Hidden Cloud Village. Known for its difficult nature and low compatibility with previous shinobi, Guyiki’s relationship with Killer Bee changed everything. Once it was sealed into this ninja, they quickly formed a strong bond and became close friends.
As the second strongest Tailed Beast in Naruto, Gyuki showcased a range of powerful abilities in battle. Its Ink Creation technique allowed this Tailed Beast and jinchuriki duo to create and use ink to distract enemies or form ink clones to trap them. Gyuki’s massive tails were also highly versatile, serving as a defensive shield and transforming into a strong tornado attack known as the Tailed Beast Eight Twists. With enormous chakra reserves and impressive regenerative capabilities, Gyuki proved to be nearly unbeatable.
Kurama | The Nine-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Mito Uzumaki, Kushina Uzumaki, Minato Namikaze (Yin half), Naruto Uzumaki, Black Zetsu (Yin half), Obito Uchiha (Yin half), Himawari Uzumaki
- Type of animal: Kitsune
Kurama was introduced in the Naruto series as one of the Hidden Leaf’s greatest enemies, which was why the people of this village hated and feared Naruto. However, the fear of Kurama was justified, as the beast had attacked the village under Tobi’s influence before being sealed within Naruto. Despite this, Naruto ultimately became the village’s savior, transforming their perception of both him and the Nine-Tails.
The beast was not friendly with Naruto either, often threatening him and showing little interest in cooperation. However, Naruto’s optimism and personality eventually won Kurama over. Through their growing bond, Naruto learned to fully utilize Kurama's powers, defeating everyone who opposed them and saving the Shinobi world from threats like the Akatsuki and the Otsutsuki.
Kurama could unleash a devastating beam attack known as the Tailed Beast Cannon, cause massive destruction with its Great Roar ability, and engage in close combat using its claws and tails. Additionally, Kurama had the ability to sense negative emotions, which contributed to its initial hostility toward the people of Konoha.
Kurama’s true strength was most evident through its bond with Naruto. The boy learned to channel Kurama’s chakra, enhancing his own abilities and developing various powerful forms as he grew up. From the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode to the extraordinarily powerful Baryon Mode, Naruto and Kurama’s combined powers ensured victory in all of their battles.
The Ten-Tailed Beast
- Jinchuriki: Hagoromo Otsutsuki, Obito Uchiha, Madara Uchiha
- Type of animal: N/A
While this is not technically one of the original Tailed-Beasts created by the Sage of the Six Paths, the Ten-Tails surely played a big role in the series, taking the central stage as one of Naruto’s biggest villains.
Created by the Otsutsuki and later controlled by Obito, Madara, and Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Ten-Tails emerged as the most powerful creature in the series. It unleashed immense destruction upon the Allied Shinobi Forces, nearly defeating them and threatening to conquer the shinobi world.
The Ten-Tails was huge, with physical strength and abilities capable of leveling cities and mountains. It could generate incredibly powerful Tailed Beast Balls and endure multiple similar attacks. Furthermore, the Ten-Tails was surprisingly fast, could rapidly regenerate damaged parts, and even create new ones, making it a highly challenging enemy for anyone who confronted it.
Final Thoughts on the Tailed Beasts in Naruto
The Tailed Beasts in Naruto play a crucial role in the series, shaping both the story and the characters within it. From the One-Tailed Shukaku to the Nine-Tailed Kurama, each beast has its own personality and backstory which tells much about the shinobi world. Their immense power often makes them targets for those such as the Akatsuki who seek to control or harness their abilities, leading to conflicts the plot revolves around.
Naruto Uzumaki’s bond with Kurama highlights the importance of understanding and cooperation, proving that they are more than just simple creatures and have their own desires and emotions. By discovering their origins and relationships, fans learn how compassion and respect can transform hostility into friendship, offering a hopeful message about breaking cycles of fear and mistrust.
