Solo Leveling may have poured most of its attention (and power-ups) into Sung Jin-woo, often leaving other characters in the shadows. But when it comes to its magic beasts, the series doesn’t hold back. From towering monstrosities to cunning predators, these creatures come in all shapes, ranks, and terrifying abilities.
⚠️ SPOILER WARNING:
The following article discusses characters, events, and lore from the Solo Leveling manhwa that have not yet appeared in the anime adaptation. Read on only if you’re comfortable with major spoilers ahead.

Chapter 11 |
Episode 3 |
The Poisoned-Toothed Giant Desert Centipede is a menacing B-rank monster that dwells in arid regions, notorious for its sheer size, brown armored shell, and venom-dripping fangs. With six small white eyes and razor-sharp mandibles, its appearance alone strikes fear into hunters. Its venom is its deadliest weapon as it can paralyze enemies, corrode armor, and spread rapidly through the body. It is also skilled at ambushes, and it burrows underground and emerges suddenly to overwhelm prey. Its hardened exoskeleton makes it resistant to most physical attacks, requiring high-level skills or magic to defeat. While the novel and manhwa depict slight differences in their rank, neither falters in depicting their true might.

This group of hulking beasts was responsible for wiping out Kim Chul’s team in the Red Gate Incident, the horror of which, plus the hunger he’d endured with his team, ended up getting him enraged, especially after he saw Jin-woo’s team chilling and dining. These ape-looking beasts are presumed to be at least B-Rank, and while their combat abilities aren’t entirely known, the fact that they were able to breeze through all the B-Rank and C-Rank hunters they encountered without issue, sending Chul running away for dear life, tells a lot about how strong they are.

Episode 14 |
Ice bears are territorial magical beasts that tend to fight with remarkable cunning and are considerably more deadly in battle because of their synergic abilities. Much like wolves, they walk and attack as a pack, with an even scarier and more powerful alpha. They trap and overwhelm trespassers with a combination of brute strength, claws, and the cold, harsh environment. They were so strong that it took teams of never-ending Shadow soldiers to bring them down, one after the other.

Spawning in the Solo Leveling sequel series, Solo Leveling: Ragnarök, Shika was the boss of Mummies and Poison-Toothed Giant Desert Centipedes, while also being the warden of an arid dungeon. While Shika was revealed to be an A-Rank beast, it was strong and quick enough to slap away a dagger that Suho threw at it. Then, as an Elite Grade shadow soldier, it could contend with Lee Minsung, who wielded Tiel’s S-Rank abilities. His sand magic allows him to manipulate sand into various forms and shapes. It was so strong that it allowed him to push back and pressure Suho into asking Esil Radiru for help.

Solo Leveling has numerous turnaround stories. One of them includes the story of the cowardly Naga tribe, who’d always hidden inside the waters for fear of dragons, ending up becoming humanoid serpents. Just like the ice bears, Nagas also fight in packs of up to 30 dragon serpents, expertly wielding tridents, and boasting an almost impenetrable set of scales. Their super fluid motion in water makes them even stronger and harder to fight than the Blue Venom-Fanged Kasaka. Usually found in high-ranking dungeons, these beasts are mini-boss-level monsters whose individual strengths are enough to overwhelm even A-Rank hunters. But with collective strength? Even an S-Rank would break a sweat!

The Death Knights are a terrifying breed of undead monsters first encountered during the raid on the Busan Gate. While their full range of powers was never thoroughly explored, they were portrayed as strong enough to pose a serious challenge to A-rank hunters, placing them among the higher-tier threats.
True to their ominous name, these creatures look like towering skeletal warriors clad in heavy gray armor, their hollow red eyes glowing with malice. Armed with imposing gray swords and often adorned with horned features, Death Knights embody the grim image of death itself with both a fearsome presence and considerable combat ability.

In most myths, orcs have been known to be somewhat ugly creatures, but also possessing immense strength and speed. The High Orcs in Solo Leveling happen to be the crème de la crème of all orcs, as this species is the strongest. Despite their sheer size, they’re also intelligent and possess varying abilities.
Under Kargalgan’s leadership, they nearly wiped out the entire Hunter’s Guild team that ventured into the gate where they lived. Thankfully, Jin-woo’s sneaky intervention when he sliced their tendons and muscles allowed the hunters to finish them off.

Groctar was one of the magic beasts whose murderous intent against humans was influenced by the same System that gave Jin-woo his powers. With an innate ability to smell enemies from a mile away, he could also sense the extent of people’s magical abilities and was one of the most intelligent orcs ever encountered in the dungeons.
Since his creation, Groctar’s only mistake, which led to his death, was sending his Red Blade Tribe into Jinah’s school through a dungeon break. While he was strong enough to erase the shadow high orcs hiding in Jinah’s shadow repeatedly, his eyes lit up with fear when he sensed Jin-woo closing in.

While its direct combat use is debatable, its high mobility and speed make it important for transport and strategic maneuvers.
As Kaisel, its skills and combat efficiency rely on Jin-woo’s mana. They are still highly impressive, as it displays both great endurance and speed with supersonic reflexes to powerful attacks.

Cerberus is, by design, very much like the three-headed gatekeeper of the Underworld in Greek mythology. This one is the hound of the Demon Castle, one that’s set on hunting and killing anyone who tries to enter or leave.
Cerberus was the Demon Castle’s first boss, a magic beast that rehashed the horrors of the Cartenon Temple for Jin-woo when he went against it. While its usual strength was enough to drain Jin-woo’s power within minutes, its Rage ability grants it double or even triple the strength of its usual abilities. It was only after resting adequately and leveling up in the penalty zone that Jin-woo was able to defeat it.

Her venomous breath could cripple even armored S-Rank hunters with ease, while her ability in breeding specialized ants made her colony an unstoppable force. Even entire strike teams struggled against her, as the Hunter Association had tried and failed in their three previous raids, making her one of the strongest magic beasts in Solo Leveling.

Even Jin-woo recounted that his overpowering Igris was by sheer luck, as it was revealed that the Igris he fought was even weaker than the original version that served as a lieutenant in the former Shadow Monarch’s army. Igris’ swordsmanship and close-combat skills, paired with his great speed and top ability, Ruler’s Hand, make him untouchable and deadly.

Think Marvel’s Ant-Man, Dragon Ball Z’s Frieza, and Doctor Strange in one character, and you get Ammut, the S-Rank Monarch of Trials and King of Monstrous Humanoids. While two Egyptian gods inspired this character, the name from Ammit, and the design from Sobek, it only makes sense that he’d debut in the Pyramid Arc of the Solo Leveling: Ragnarök timeline, with slight differences in his story in the webtoon and novel.
Ammut is the kind of beast whose bloodlust alone could have even B and A-Rank hunters and beasts cowering in fear, and his Iron Body Technique allows him to combat his opponent’s spiritual bodies rather than their physical. He is so well-versed in close combat, that he gave Suho a run for his money when they clashed.

The Demonic Spectre Clan’s Grand Shaman, Harmakan, is one of the most driven, cunning, cold, and ominous beings in existence, one who fuels his powers by corrupting souls and feeding off their despair.
As his story runs through four major arcs of the Solo Leveling: Ragnarök storyline, he tortured many souls and was responsible for many deaths, including Hwang Dongsuk’s. In this time, and after he became one of Sung Suho’s shadow soldiers, he has demonstrated top-level necromantic skills, which include curses and peak manipulative skills.

Because of their overwhelming power, they are considered catastrophic threats, appearing only in the highest-level gates. While he was capable of using his cursed voice to summon the undead, he also possessed a greater mana pool than even the so-called High-Grand Demons. This is one of the few mystery monsters in Solo Leveling, whose abilities are only known from Jin-woo’s account. Though it never made an appearance, Sung Jinwoo claimed it surpassed both Metus and Vulcan in power, standing as the mightiest boss-like magic beast he had encountered at that point. But that’s only to be expected, as it was the boss of an A-Rank Gate that the Hunters Guild bought and raided.

Kandiaru was the creator of the System that turned Sung Jin-woo from being the weakest hunter to the strongest S-Rank hunter in the world. While he created and moderates the System to help his master, Ashborn, find a suitable vessel who could inherit his powers, Kandiaru was later betrayed by the Shadow Monarch. His strength was way beyond that of the average S-Rank, and he even stood his ground in a confrontation against Jin-woo when the hunter became the new Shadow Monarch.
He did run away from this dimension after that fight, but he was never a small fry, as even his soldiers were able to give Cha Hae-In, Choi Jon-In, and Woo Jinchul a hard time when they found him with Jin-woo in the Double Dungeon when he was supposed to meet Ashborn. Also, his Ruler’s Authority seemed to be even stronger than Jin-woo’s, and that says a lot.

He was solely responsible for the tragic deaths of eight S-Rank hunters involved in the Jeju Island Raid, one of whom was Japan’s strongest hunter, Goto Ryuji.
One debated reason for the relative ease Jinwoo had in killing him was his battle inexperience. He really did stand toe-to-toe with the new Shadow Monarch, who, in all his might, still traded blows against the ant. His arsenal of abilities, which includes paralysis poison, healing magic that he got from eating Byung-Gyu’s head, Ice Magic, and Gluttony, all make him a very powerful magic beast.

Eons after his capture by the Rulers, Kamish emerged from the first S-Rank Gate that spawned in America, killed hundreds of S-Rank hunters who confronted it, and laid waste to the entire West Coast. Even though it later fell at the hands of Thomas Andre and four other powerful S-Rank hunters from across the world, Kamish would forever be remembered as the greatest calamity that befell humanity.
Originally, Kamish was the servant of the King of Dragons, Antares, before his capture in the war against the Rulers. As if shooting potent blasts of fire wasn’t enough, Kamish also possessed Dragon’s Fear, an ability that runs chills down the spine of anyone weaker than it, making them lose thought and coordination.

Even with all the monstrous power we’ve covered, this is still only scratching the surface of what Solo Leveling has in store. Many of these creatures haven’t even appeared in the anime yet, and when they do, they’ll push the stakes higher than ever. So if you thought the giants, dragons, and titans were terrifying on the page, just wait until they come to life on screen, because the real storm of magic beasts is only just beginning.
After Sung Jinwoo became the new Shadow Monarch after Ashborn, he became the strongest character in Solo Leveling. He is superior to all other powerful entities, including Monarchs and Rulers.
Rakan, the Monarch of Fangs, is the king of beasts in Solo Leveling. He is an aggressive and powerful Monarch known for his savagery and his ability to transform into a big white wolf.
The strongest monarch is Antares, the Monarch of Destruction. He is also often referred to as the Berserk Dragon and King of Dragons.
In Solo Leveling, the hostile creatures found in dungeons are called magical beasts. They are often diverse, however, as there are humanoids, demons, ogres, orcs, giants, dragons, and undead, among others.
The strongest monster/antagonist in Solo Leveling is the Monarch of Destruction, Antares, who was also dubbed the strongest among the Monarchs. He was a supreme threat to even the Shadow Monarch, as he had powers that made him capable of destroying entire worlds.
Sung Jin-woo is the strongest mage in the Solo Leveling universe, followed by other mage-class hunters like Yuri Orloff, Christopher Reed, and Choi Jon-In.
The god in Solo Leveling is referred to as the Absolute Being. He created the world, splitting it into light and dark and creating the Rulers and Monarchs also. But he was a cruel and indifferent creator who only sought entertainment through the endless wars that followed.
The Monarchs are ancient, godlike beings born from the Absolute Being’s shadow side, destined to wage an eternal war against the Rulers,...
