When it comes to anime, “weird” is less of a red flag and more of a glowing neon invitation. While it’s disliked by elitists in the anime community, those who really know their onions know the hidden gems here. Undoubtedly, the medium thrives on embracing the bizarre, the absurd, and the downright unexplainable.
If you’re looking for anime that’d leave you asking “What on Earth did I just watch – and why do I love it?” then this list is for you. Here are the top 15 weirdest anime series that would challenge everything you thought you knew about storytelling.

Often regarded as an anime that’s unfit for sane people, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is a weird show centered on a group of warriors taking a stand against a totalitarian army that seeks to wipe out hair from the earth. The characters have a variety of abilities, including the ability to use nose hair, jelly, and gas as weapons. Honestly, there is very little sense in the plot. Alongside the odd abilities, nearly all of the primary characters behave in comically strange ways.
However, it’s a creative and humorous show that’s entertaining, despite lacking compelling moments. Most of it is a villain of the week who has no clear objective. The majority of the characters are just plain entertaining thanks to all their weird powers.
2. FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

There is a lot of controversy about whether or not the FLCL anime series has a particular lesson or point to note. At least the character designs are good! For the most part, Fooly Cooly is a vast expanse of abstract presentation. It’s a slice of life, full of innuendo and slapstick comedy, plus meaningless, hyperactive, and fast-paced storytelling. However, the essence is lost somewhere within it.
While reviews and ratings on different platforms might suggest otherwise, true experience never lies. Some say that watching all 24 episodes of this anime series might be a waste of time, it’d help to understand why it is considered weird and abstract.
3. Mousou Dairinin – Paranoia Agent

Satoshi Kon is one of the most acclaimed mangaka and his works like Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure have been nothing short of phenomenal. Paranoia Agent has been referred to as a cut above the others. It has a good storyline, great themes, and a very interesting premise. But how is it weird?
This is due to its unsettling mix of different psychological elements. The disturbingly murky character known as "Lil' Slugger," a fluid art style that mirrors various characters' viewpoints, and its examination of societal fears and paranoia also add to the weirdness of it all. With all of those oddities being set against the backdrop of a supposedly ordinary Tokyo, Paranoia Agent prompts viewers to question the reality of what they're seeing.

This is one of the few weird R+ rated, non-children-friendly, 12-episode anime out there. While it’s understandably ecchi, it feels more like an excuse to just show and see women juggle bosoms of various sizes amidst a rather bland storyline and some action.
The story is set in the Japanese Edo period where all that matters are… big bosoms. Breast is the order of the day, as it serves to show how much influence and affluence a person and family have. Women with big breasts are always rich and highly respected and the misery of the small-breasted or flat-chested ones knows no bounds. Amidst all of this, Chifusa, a Manyuu clan outcast, and her sympathetic partner, Kaede, set out and seek to correct the wrongs that her clan has caused the land.
5. Senki Zesshou Symphogear – Symphogear

It’s a common phenomenon to see main characters fighting and eliminating the villains in an anime, but Symphogear’s attempt at a different approach to villainy is more like a botched project. Hibiki’s unending attempts at making friends with all her enemies with a single incoherent and dull speech are almost laughable, if not unenjoyable. It almost always leaves one feeling rather cringe. One would understand that she’s no Erwin Smith, but even the anime’s inconsistencies, lack of seriousness, average fights, and combination of almost contradictory elements easily make it one of the worst/weirdest anime that’s graced screens.
6. Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt

Panty and Stocking is easily another weird anime series full of wild nonsense and cheeky humor. It mixes edgy humor, over-the-top action, and super sexualized characters with a fun, cartoonish vibe that resembles American animations like Powerpuff Girls. It’s a parody-filled story that pokes fun at pop culture but also goes for the lowbrow laughs through lots of swearing and sexual jokes.
It tries to poke fun at modern Moe trends while giving a nod to Western culture. However, its chaotic setting, zero-dimensional characters, and strange plotlines tend to polarize viewers. The anime thrives on being unpredictable and provocative, giving it a wild and sometimes controversial vibe. Its child-like appearance is quite misleading, as it contains quite a bit of violence and profanity. It definitely isn’t suitable for children under the age of 18.

Dororon is a mostly nonsensical, perverted, and whimsical adventure featuring the impulsive demon prince Enma. Enma and the Youkai Patrol navigate through a series of silly and occasional vulgar antics involving random demons and their interactions with humanity. This is a humorous anime inspired by 70’s manga, featuring an abundance of ecchi elements. The Youkai patrol characters and their opponents have the weirdest get-ups and abilities you may not be able to wrap your head around.
8. Gurren Lagann

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, or TTGL really shines with its wild, action-packed battles that just keep getting bigger and crazier, reaching epic heights. The sudden tonal change between its two arcs – going from a wild apocalyptic comedy to a serious political drama and a bit of over-the-top romance can really catch you off-guard.
Also, Yoko’s over-the-top sexual vibe really stands against her skills and makes everything about her weirder. The visuals are great, and the super-macho vibe is exciting and kind of ridiculous. The emotional disconnect and pretty divisive ending raise questions about whether it is worth watching or not.
9. Keijo!!!!!!!

This is a prime example of an excellent anime with a really weird concept. Keijo!!!!! does great justice in that respect. Being a Shounen sports anime, it parodies the genre, with its peak fan service and humor which it uses to tell its story… The story is where it gets a bit weird.
Most sports anime series are usually centered around high school students going to competitions, and Keijo!!!!! also is the same here. This sports anime centers around a sport of queens, something that is revered as the most important sport of all time. That’s right. Butt Wrestling! The typical underdog story told here sees the characters undergoing ridiculous training and mock games, discovering special moves and whatnot. It’s perfect for a mature audience, expecially if you’re looking to see lots of big boobs and butts in a comedic and interesting fashion.

The Baki anime series has managed to slowly creep its way into the sights of many, especially after it got on Netflix. An intense martial arts-based anime, Baki tells the story of young Baki Hanma who sets out to take the title of the world’s strongest man from his father. The setting presents a world filled with men with hyper-muscular physiques, ripped bodies, and some even towering over others in an intimidating manner.

A few of these weird anime might seem like “children’s only anime”, but Neko Ramen appeals to all audiences. The anime is all about a cat who runs a ramen shop and his customers. At first, it looked cool, but the story ended up getting rather repetitive. However, the humor is more than basic and it has a few intriguing episodes. It was one of the few famous anime back in 2007 after it was adapted from the Neko Ramen Yonkoma manga created by Kenji Sonishi.

Nazo no Kanojo X is an anime that combines odd and deeply authentic themes perfectly. Although the premise – a relationship formed through shared saliva - might appear strange, the show’s real strength lies in its depiction of first relationships. The series stands apart from many school romance anime by featuring realistic, relatable characters rather than relying on stereotypical figures and idealized tropes.
Tsubaki, a complex yet ordinary “regular guy”, captures the specifics of young love, ranging from possessiveness to vulnerability. Urabe, in contrast, embodies independence and complexity, going beyond the typical tropes of the aloof girl and feeble, complaining guy. The anime provides a profound and candid examination of love, placing it more on the side of great than weird, all for a mature audience.

“This boring world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn’t exist will end someday. Let’s keep fighting until then.”
– Ayame Kajou.
Prison School and Shimoneta are probably the dirtiest and most vulgar shows released for mature audiences in 2015, with the latter falling behind just a little bit. What makes Shimoneta utterly ridiculous is the storyline. Simply put, the anime is set in Japan where the use of dirty or lewd jokes is prohibited. Everyone has to wear a device on their necks which serves as a deterrent to flouting this particular rule.
Then comes a group of high schoolers who decide to take on the authorities by creating and spreading pornographic materials, making lewd jokes, and just openly throwing around sex-related words and taunts. Another ridiculous concept is that instead of wearing masks, the heroes and villains wear pants on their faces, light clothing, and undies to go about their machinations.

Sabikui Bisco isn’t your average anime. It is very weird and that’s just one of its most endearing qualities. It is set in a wasteland that was once Tokyo, where the Earth and its inhabitants are slowly rusting due to a mysterious and toxic wind. While the story isn’t the strongest and the characters don’t stray out of the conventional designs, some elements in the general setting just completely defy normal reasoning and expectations.
On the one hand, the performances feel completely odd and over-the-top. On the other hand, it is well coordinated that you’d have to see it for yourself to fully understand how fantastic and strange it is.
15. Hoozuki no Reitetsu – Hozuki’s Coolheadedness

Almost ten years after its release, Cool-Headed Hoozuki is still regarded as one of the most overlooked comedic anime series outside of Japan. The core idea is that a Buddhist Hell is an ineffective bureaucracy that is kept running by one ogre named Hoozuki. The series' reception in the United States was, to put it mildly, uneven, as not many people get any of the jokes.
Hozuki is one of those anime that totally lifts your spirits, with a great layout as it is packed with a bunch of mini stories. It’s super easy to get lost in the world, a perfect watch whenever you’re in the mood for a good laugh. You come to love the main character’s wicked sense of humor, his tough and twisted demeanor, and the unique vibe that the series also gives.
