California
California is often referred to as a “No Gun” state when it comes to imitation firearms. Under Penal Code 20170, it is illegal to display or expose any imitation gun in public places. This law includes Gel Blasters and Orbeez Guns, which are classified as imitation firearms.
To prevent confusion or panic, 14 locations have been designated as public spaces where displaying such items is prohibited. For more detailed information, refer to the official California Penal Code or local guidelines.
New Jersey
In New Jersey, owning a Gel Blaster is not a crime, but using one to cause fear or alarm in public is illegal. You are allowed to keep and use a Gel Blaster if it complies with Bill A4260, which outlines the following requirements:
- The gun must not be colored blue, black, silver, or aluminum.
- A non-removable orange stripe (at least one inch wide) must run along each side of the barrel.
- The barrel must be at least one inch in diameter.
- The barrel and body must be made from the same material.

Texas
Texas, known for its open-carry laws, does not have specific restrictions on Gel Blasters. However, using any imitation gun—including Gel Blasters—to threaten or scare others may lead to criminal charges. The key is using them responsibly and avoiding public disturbance.
The Carolinas & Georgia
Law enforcement in the Carolinas and Georgia has raised concerns about Gel Blasters due to their realistic appearance. Despite being sold in many retail stores, some models resemble real firearms closely. Because of this, authorities urge caution and awareness when handling these items in public.
New York
As of August 2022, New York passed legislation banning imitation guns that closely resemble real firearms. Key requirements for legal imitation guns include:
- The imitation gun must not have a laser pointer.
- The manufacturer’s name must be clearly visible.
- The barrel must be made of the same material as the gun body.
- The gun must be brightly colored in one of the following:
- Bright purple, blue, green, red, pink, yellow, orange
- Transparent or translucent material

Hawaii
Hawaii law (see section 134) restricts the public display of imitation firearms. The main rules include:
- Fake guns must be securely wrapped when transported in public.

The Role of the Orange Tip
The orange tip found on most Orbeez Guns or Gel Blasters serves a critical safety function: it helps identify the item as a fake gun. Nearly all state laws emphasize not removing this tip.
While removing the orange tip may not always be explicitly illegal, doing so increases the risk of the item being mistaken for a real weapon—potentially leading to dangerous situations or voiding the product’s warranty.
