For many who don’t know, Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction that delves into the harsh convergence of advanced technology and societal decay – where high-tech meets low life. Just imagine towering neon cities, cybernetic bodily enhancements, rogue AI, and underground anti-technology resistance movements. At its core, Cyberpunk questions the reality of humanity in a world dominated by machines and huge, shadow corporations.
For those who do know about the genre, especially anime fans, the appeal lies in its rich philosophical themes, striking visuals, and emotionally complex narratives. Classics such as Ghost in The Shell explore themes of identity and consciousness, whereas Akira unravels power, chaos, and control, and recent shows like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners zero in on the price of survival in hyper-digital dystopias.
Unlike polished sci-fi, cyberpunk hits home because it shows the real world’s growing dependence on technology and the anxiety of losing touch with our true selves. And this makes it not just thrilling, but also intellectually stimulating, implacable, and hauntingly helpful.
This mix of futuristic wonder and existential toughness is what keeps the fanbase going, and if you’re seeking out the best options this genre has to offer, here is a carefully compiled list of the best cyberpunk anime ever made. And just like Steve Jobs once said about the iPod, “You will love this!”

While its story may be confusing and its ending unclear, Genocyber is still a powerful, emotional, and thought-provoking entry in the cyberpunk genre. This is an anime that makes a strong impression, whether it's positive or negative. Some viewers see it as average or even awful, while others believe it is a misunderstood masterpiece. The story is about a young girl who is harshly manipulated by science and transformed into Genocyber, a nearly unstoppable humanoid weapon. As she struggles with her broken memories and the harshness of the world, her powers begin to spiral out of control. Where humanity's pride and fixation on technological power eventually led to widespread devastation, she has to keep fighting, but with unforeseen and undetermined costs.

Id: Invaded is an interesting enigma, an extraordinary mystery, and a gripping psycho-thriller. It expertly places you on the edge of your seat, only to plunge you into the profound depths of your own thoughts. Once you’ve processed its strikingly graphic imagery, from unimaginable gore to disturbingly creative torture, you find yourself weighed down by its deeply resonant character trauma, if not swept away by the exhilarating energy of its dynamic insert songs and visually stunning action. The plot is brilliantly crafted, intricate, and mesmerizing, while the characters that populate its uniquely structured world provide it with an indelibly memorable sense of identity, rich with layers of unusual dialogue and characterization that overflow with implicit meaning that only few artists could conceive.

Megazone 23 offers an intriguing, albeit inconsistent, ride through the realm of 80s sci-fi anime. Divided into three parts, each helmed by a different director, it starts with a compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and an unforgettable 80s J-pop soundtrack. The first part sets high expectations, yet the second part undergoes a significant change in tone and style, resulting in disappointment for some fans. In part three, the narrative takes a distinct turn, introducing a fresh cast and a new setting.

In the shadowy sprawl of a metropolis walks a man with a gun for a head – one brimming with righteousness but without conviction. A man who takes immense pride in his craft. Set in a cyberpunk world inhabited by cyborgs, NGL tells the story of a man who serves as a private investigator who is determined to eliminate corruption from his world. A man who is called Juzo Inui, the one who gifts hope to the hopeless.
Tasku Karasuma may not be widely recognized by many, yet some of his original works as a mangaka feature the integration of futuristic settings and elements of science fiction. No Guns Life follows suit as it immerses us in a cyberpunk setting where humans have evolved into cyborgs, now referred to as “Extended.”

This series might not have the same production scale as some of its peers, but there are a few things that make it tower above others. It is a very special piece. Armitage III didn’t just shoot and explode its way through the plot. It took time to build a relationship between the android, Naomi and Ross Sylibus, her partner, and chose not to follow the trend of overly sexualizing or sidelining its female characters.
It also sells the idea of robots wanting families, emotions, and equality, while facing systemic oppression, setting it ahead of its time not only in plot, and aligning it with other philosophical works like Blade Runner. And though it may not be as flashy as some other series that premiered in the same season, it had a grungy, noir-like tone with vivid urban decay and emotional tension.

The six brief episodes that make up BLAME! are a harsh and mysterious adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei's manga. It centers on Killy, a lone human surviving in a nightmarish world full of androids and clones. Although their existence is unknown, his goal seems to be collecting "net-genes" while looking for any remaining humans. While the story relies more on mood than a distinct plot and is more abstract than coherent, it’ll definitely be an incomplete experience if you jump to the anime without experiencing the joys hidden in the manga.

Even before its release in Fall 2020, anticipation and praises for Akudama Drive had gotten to a near high point, as it even went on to become the most anticipated anime series of the period. Akudama Drive stands out as one of the best shows you'll ever see. It’s irrational, it’s somewhat foolish, it’s provocative — yet it remains completely indifferent to these aspects, and that clarity is there for all to see. There are no bothersome, whiny Japanese students, no tedious fan service, and no lackluster plot twists — just incredible action and stunning visual style.
Also, the animation in this work is impressively exceptional: a blend of 2D and CGI, aesthetically pleasing backgrounds, and skillfully executed fight scenes that are reminiscent of Ufotable's high standards — and in contrast to the Fate franchise, the characters engage in less dialogue during battles. Ditch the expectations on well-written story, character development, and all of that. In fact, God bless Kazutaka Kodaka!

The series was originally intended to consist of 13 episodes; however, production was halted due to legal disputes among the participating studios, and when it continued later, it got shortened to 8 OVA episodes. Set in an apocalyptic 2032, Bubblegum Crisis follows the Knight Sabers, a team of armored women fighting rogue cyborgs and corporate corruption in Mega Tokyo. The sequel, Bubblegum Crash (with 3 OVA episodes), continues the story following Genom's defeat, investigating the consequences with a more intense perspective while delving further into the characters' individual challenges and the persistent dangers confronting their divided city.

Appleseed is a show that tends to resurface every so often, often after many had forgotten it, typically as a remake or reboot, with the initial 1988 anime remaining its finest among the anime adaptations to date, though it does have its shortcomings.
The anime series is undeniably captivating as it reimagines the sci-fi genre freshly and innovatively. The Bioroids (genetically engineered humans) have valid concerns regarding their role as servants to humans, while humans also have legitimate grievances due to their lack of political power. This creates a compelling scenario where there are no clear heroes or villains. Unfortunately, the show’s potential seems somewhat squandered due to the hurried pace; however, the robust characters, especially Deunan, along with the intriguing scenarios and moral dilemmas, significantly contribute to making Appleseed an enjoyable piece.

Over the years, Battle Angel Alita has not only spurred a live-action movie sequel, but also has been known by many names, some of which include Hyper Future Vision, Ganmu, and Tsutsu Yume. It tells the story of a cybernetic girl named Gally, who was discovered in a scrapyard by a doctor named Ido. Rebuilt and given a second chance at life, she navigates a brutal postapocalyptic world while struggling with amnesia, incredible combat skills, and a past shrouded in mystery.
While each step forward brings both danger and self-discovery, what truly makes it a great cyberpunk anime is its raw emotion, striking atmosphere, and the way it explores humanity through a mechanical lens. It’s a powerful, almost-forgotten, underrated gem that continues to resonate with fans of classic sci-fi and cyberpunk.

Wit Studios, the same one behind Great Pretender, The Ancient Magnus’ Bride, and Attack on Titan, created Vivy: Fluorite’s Eye Song as an original anime series. It is a thrilling mix of heart-pounding action, stunning animation, and surprisingly emotional storytelling. But what’s so great about it? It has a rapid pace and eerie soundtrack, with short binge-able episodes that keep you glued to your screen. The fight scenes are also some of the best in recent memory, for they are fluid, intense, and gorgeous to look at.
The series tackles familiar sci-fi tropes like time travel and artificial intelligence with renewed vigor and a solid narrative base, all while probing into enquiries about emotion, purpose, and the essence of humanity. Even with a few hit-or-miss characters, the gripping plot and animation make it a sci-fi spectacle that punches hard and sings even harder.

The mention of this masterpiece anime movie is never complete without the name, Satoshi Kon. If you’ve seen Christopher Nolan’s Inception, then you’d understand that he borrowed from Satoshi’s talent for blurring the lines between realism and surrealism, a notion that’d become the norm with the majority of his projects.
Based on the 1993 Paprika novel by Yasutaka Tsuitsui, the 1 hour and 30 minutes of the movie explores the use of advanced technology to dive into people’s dreams, all for a good cause. But as these stories often go, the technology fell into the wrong hands—and when people’s dreams, thoughts, desires, aspirations, and very subconscious are manipulated, chaos ensures.
Paprika has not only inspired many other anime series and movies (including Hollywood), but has also won a good number of awards, and has, till this day, remained a true timeless gem whose impact can never be understated.

Far from being your typical cyberpunk thrill ride, Texhnolyze is a disturbing dive into a decaying world where silence speaks louder than action. It is grim, philosophical, and slow, as it demands patience and introspection. Each of its 22 episodes is like a cryptic riddle, filled with existential questions, haunting atmosphere, and chilling beauty.
While many viewers found the grim reality portrayed difficult, others found a weird optimism amid the debris, a clear monument to every human’s drive to live. The series does more than just tell a story; it questions your understanding of life, technology, and purpose. At the end of it all, you’d see that it is not for everyone, but for the few for whom it leaves a lasting, enlightened impression.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has wrapped up its first season, providing a conclusive ending to the central narrative. A new standalone series titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has been announced, although there are currently no plans for a direct second season. So, that sort of makes it inconclusive, right?
As one of the most highly rated cyberpunk anime of the season, Edgerunners not only follows the subgenre’s script to the letter, but takes the neon-dystopian-futuristic setting to new heights. It brings out the beauty of the irony in seeing punks in slums in a futuristic world, as it tells the story of a street kid who tries to survive in a city obsessed with cybernetic enhancements by becoming a mercenary outlaw, or edgerunner.

Similar to George Orwell’s book, 1984, and running from 2012 to 2019 across three seasons plus movies, Psycho-Pass is set in dystopian Japan where the Sibyl System monitors citizens’ criminal intent via brain scans, and enforcers like Akane Tsunemori uphold justice, as the System dictates.
The series nails the cyberpunk vibe with its sleek visuals paired with Akane’s growth from rookie to principled badass. It also features intense gunfights, psychological cat-and-mouse games, with deep philosophical questions about control and justice, similar to Ghost in the Shell.

The gore, obscene language, and scenes in Serial Experiments Lain are not the only reasons it’s not recommended for children, or at least anyone under the age of 17. Lain's story is highly cryptic, which means that the audience is given the parts and subtle clues that together form the plot instead of being told directly. There is no conversation or character inner monologue in the anime, which prevents the viewers from knowing more than they ought to, leaving them feeling disoriented and compelled to look for answers. This is a show that mostly focuses on its visual elements because it lacks conversation, and it uses a great deal of subtle symbolism and visual clues to communicate its message. For the right audience, it subtly plays with their minds, so imagine the impact it could have on younger viewers.

Oh Akira! What would the anime world and cyberpunk genre be without your influence? While its only cyberpunk element might be Shotaro Kaneda’s red bike, Akira delivers so much more. Set in a chaotic neo-Tokyo, it weaves a gripping story of biker gangs, government conspiracies, secret human experiments, and children with destructive psychic powers. It’s a dystopian epic where rebellion clashes with existential terror, and raw power spirals out of control. Visually groundbreaking and thematically intense, Akira didn’t just redefine anime; it influenced everything from Ghost in the Shell to The Matrix, leaving a legacy that still pulses through pop culture today.

Mamoru Oshii’s Koukaku Kidoutai was the first cinematic adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s most famous manga of the same name. The adaptation significantly compresses the original story, minimizing the sexual elements and comic relief to adopt a more serious tone, while also shifting the backdrop from Japan to a Hong Kong-inspired city.
The film is renowned globally as one of the most iconic Japanese animated works, notable for being the first to attain the top position on Billboard magazine's film best-seller list. Additionally, it played a significant role in inspiring the Wachowskis during the development of the Matrix films. A special edition called Ghost in the Shell: 2.0 came out in 2008, showcasing scenes that were reanimated with enhanced CGI to align with the aesthetic of Ghost in The Shell: Innocence, which is the sequel that was released in 2004.
But in all, every single piece of it (series, OVA, and movie) tells the story of Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg and elite operative in a futuristic cyberpunk world where human consciousness can be digitized and bodies can be fully cybernetic.

It’s a bit funny to find out that the majority of the best futuristic manga and anime series ever made were made in the late 90s and early 20s, even before the advent of actual AI. That has, in some way, proven that, however impractical human imaginations might seem, all they need is time and effort to materialize.
Some of the series mentioned above hit you with pure adrenaline, and others make you pause and think. Either way, there’s something here for every kind of anime fan, from the philosophically curious to the action junkies.
Some of the best cyberpunk anime on Crunchyroll include Psycho-Pass, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, and Akudama Drive.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a universe setting in the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This anime series is critically acclaimed for its visuals, emotional depth, and story. Also, Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing game released in 2020.
There are many cyberpunk anime, with some well-known ones being Cyber City Oedo 808, Ergo Proxy, Akira, Psycho-Pass, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Some of the best cyberpunk books are Snow Crash, Neuromancer, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Ready Player One, and Altered Carbon.
If you’re new to the genre, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are great starting points. They balance action, themes, and visuals while introducing core cyberpunk ideas.
Cyberpunk anime often deal with themes like the dangers of unchecked technology, the loss of humanity, corporate control, identity crises, and rebellion against oppressive systems.
While many cyberpunk anime lean into gritty, dystopian storytelling, not all are purely violent. Some, like Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song or Expelled From Paradise, mix emotional depth, music, or romance with futuristic settings.
