“I never intended to live a normal life. The world is full of people besides myself. So, once more, I think I’ll live for others”
- Megumi Fushiguro
Megumi Fushiguro—brooding, brilliant, and endlessly complex—is one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most intriguing sorcerers. With his iconic “Yameda!” phrase, which sparked numerous memes, Megumi has a way of captivating audiences without needing the spotlight.
Known for his intense, strategic mind and powerful Ten Shadows Technique, Megumi isn’t your regular high school Jujutsu sorcerer. While he’s a whole lot different from the Megumis in other anime like Fruits Basket, Urotsukidoji, and Rurouni Kenshin, Fushiguro stands out as a unique combination of intellect and mystery, blending unbreakable resolve with a darker edge that’s quite intriguing.
Who is Megumi Fushiguro?
Megumi Fushiguro is the deuteragonist in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is a Second Grade Jujutsu sorcerer and a Tokyo Jujutsu High School freshman, along with Nobara Kugisaki and Yuji Itadori. He is a descendant of the Zen’in Clan, as he is Toji Fushiguro’s son and Tsumiki Fushiguro’s step-brother.

Megumi | Background And Origins
Megumi Fushiguro was born to Toji Fushiguro and an unnamed mother on December 22nd, 2002. During elementary school, his father married Tsumiki’s mother. After he died and Tsumiki’s mother disappeared, Satoru Gojo made good on a promise he made to Toji and started taking care of Megumi and his stepsister.
Sometime in his childhood days, Megumi attended the Saitama Urami East Junior High School, where he grew notorious for getting into fights. After these incidents, Tsumiki would reprimand him for his impulsive behavior, most of which fell on deaf ears.
While he was born outside the Clan, Megumi is a descendant of the Zen’in Clan. As such, he is related to the following Zen’ins in the following ways:
- Junichi Zen’in – Uncle
- Maki Zen’in – Second Aunt
- Mai Zen’in – Second Aunt
- Naobito Zen’in – Grand Uncle
- Ogi Zen’in – Grand Uncle
- Naoya Zen’in – Second Uncle
Megumi | Personality
In contrast to his teammates' more lively and quirky personalities, Megumi Fushiguro is one of Jujutsu Kaisen's most complicated and soft-spoken characters. Megumi had a severe and brooding character from an early age, frequently coming across as distant and uncaring. He seldom shows emotion and keeps a neutral countenance, which conveys a seriousness that annoys everyone around him, particularly his classmates and Gojo. His annoyance is a result of his ingrained convictions and a resolute mindset that he acquired as a youngster.
Megumi has a strong moral compass that is motivated by a sense of fairness, despite his cold/harsh appearance. Even in middle school, when he established a reputation for disciplining bullies, he showed that he detests those with undeserved pride. Megumi's contempt goes beyond straightforward good-versus-evil divisions; he is equally scathing of those who are overly kind and those who are cruel.
His complex relationship with his sister Tsumiki, whose tragedy inspired him to pursue a career in sorcery, contributes to this internal tension. He battles to right the injustices in life, but not because he wants to be a hero. He frequently acts based on his convictions rather than social norms, as seen by his decision to save Yuji even though he knew it would have dire repercussions. Megumi develops into his position as a sorcerer over time, facing his own fears and inner anguish while attempting to protect the people he loves.
Megumi | Physical Appearance
As a teenager, Megumi is a 175cm tall young man with a slim build. He is distinguished by his pale skin and upward-slanting dark blue eyes, which are portrayed as green in the manga. His eyes reveal a keen and aloof nature. His jet-black hair is styled in unique long spikes that stick out in different directions, frequently likened to a sea urchin.
Megumi wears the standard Jujutsu High uniform, featuring a dark blue jacket layered over a white, long-sleeved dress shirt. His uniform pants coordinate perfectly with his jacket and rest just above his shins. He dons long black socks that envelop the remainder of his legs, complemented by low-cut brown shoes. For training sessions, Megumi chooses a more casual outfit, wearing a blue tracksuit.
Megumi | Relationships And Character Dynamics
With Yuji Itadori
Megumi and Yuji have a mutually respectful relationship, but one marked by regular tension. While Megumi first considered Yuji as an additional burden, sparing him from death against the rules demonstrated that Megumi's sense of justice extends beyond tradition. He fights with the concept of protecting individuals indiscriminately, but eventually resolves to defend Yuji since he believes Yuji is a nice guy.
Their friendship becomes stronger as they fight together, but Megumi's reasoning contrasts with Yuji's impulsive courage. Despite this, Megumi comes to rely on Yuji emotionally, notably in their shared guilt over Sukuna. Their relationship is based on implicit trust, which makes Megumi's rare moments of weakness, such as when he asks Yuji to help him save his sister, even greater.
With Nobara Kugisaki
Megumi's relationship with Nobara is more subtle. They frequently argue, amplified by how Nobara's confident and outspoken nature contrasts with Megumi's introverted style. Though they appear to disagree, they have a better grasp of each other's resolve as sorcerers. Following Yuji's apparent death during the Detention Center event, Megumi and Nobara become closer, joined by their sadness and resolve to become stronger. Despite Megumi's private character, Nobara's bluntness penetrates his defenses, resulting in a relationship that is built on mutual respect and mild friendship.
With Gojo Satoru
Megumi's relationship with his teacher, Gojo, combines respect, irritation, and profound trust. Gojo believes Megumi has immense potential and frequently attempts to push him past his boundaries. Conversely, Megumi finds Gojo's laid-back, silly attitude to be annoying, especially given the weight of his place as the strongest in the Jujutsu community, and responsibilities. Despite this, Megumi respects Gojo's advice, seeing him as a mentor whose power and wisdom are critical to his growth as a sorcerer.
With Other Characters
Tsumiki Fushiguro
His relationship with Tsumiki Fushiguro, his stepsister, is characterized by profound affection and a sense of duty. Tsumiki’s curse serves as Megumi’s main driving force to pursue a path as a sorcerer, while her kindness starkly contrasts his more cynical perspective on life. Despite his love for her, Megumi conceals his worries beneath a calm facade, motivated by an unwavering determination to protect her at any price.
Maki Zen’in
Megumi and Maki Zen’in share a mutual respect as fellow sorcerers. While they both reject the corrupt values of the Zen’in clan, Maki encourages Megumi to assume leadership of the family following Naobito’s death. Although he is hesitant, Megumi ultimately embraces the responsibility, understanding its importance to Maki. Their interactions reveal a mutual indifference towards family politics and social standing, highlighting their shared values rather than individual aspirations.
Panda and Toge Inumaki
Panda and Toge Inumaki work together closely with Megumi, focusing more on their teamwork than on emotional connections. Megumi holds a deep respect for their skills as sorcerers, yet his engagements with them tend to be primarily professional and centered around their missions, sprinkled with brief instances of camaraderie during collective battles.
Aoi Todo
Lastly, Megumi's encounter with Aoi Todo at the Kyoto Goodwill Event served as a test to his careful demeanor. Todo, a passionate and competitive fighter, critiques Megumi for not fully realizing and utilizing his full potential (just like Sukuna did). This tension compels Megumi to face his limitations leading to some moments of personal growth.
Megumi | Skills, Abilities, and Fighting Style
Physical Techniques
Tactical Intellect
Megumi Fushiguro's remarkable strategic mind is his most valuable strength as a sorcerer. He engages in combat with a strategic mindset, carefully assessing his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses to outsmart them, rather than depending only on brute force.
His advanced reasoning allows him to understand the mechanics of cursed techniques, as shown in his encounters with different skilled opponents. Despite his limited battle experience, Megumi's extensive understanding of jujutsu and keen deductive abilities enable him to cope effectively in high-pressure scenarios. His skill in crafting strategies spontaneously and adapting to his environment renders him a formidable opponent, even when facing experienced sorcerers and powerful curses.
Hand-To-Hand Combat
Megumi is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. From a young age, he has demonstrated impressive strength and agility. His fast and graceful fighting style allows him to engage enemies up close, as seen when he easily overpowered bullies and destroyed curses with his bare hands.
Although initially weaker in close combat by sorcerer standards, Megumi improved greatly after training with Maki. He prefers using weapons and shikigami for support but excels in hand-to-hand combat within his domain. His cursed energy reinforcement heightens his abilities, allowing him to overwhelm strong opponents with a combination of punches and kicks.
Weapon Mastery
Megumi is a highly skilled weapons specialist, having trained under Maki Zen’in, the top cursed tool user at Jujutsu High. He has mastered various weapons, starting with a polearm and later using tonfa during the Goodwill Event. He’s also used Playful Cloud and sometimes a light-weight sword. He can store cursed tools in his shadow, allowing him to swiftly switch between weapons.
In life-or-death situations, he favors lightweight, one-handed swords, like his signature black blade, for their speed and efficiency. His advanced weapon dexterity enables him to fluidly swap weapons mid-fight and combine swordplay with close combat techniques, as seen in his battles against formidable opponents like Hanami and Reggie.
Endurance
Megumi possesses remarkable endurance, showcasing exceptional pain tolerance, stamina, and durability throughout his battles. He has repeatedly survived brutal confrontations with special grade curses and powerful sorcerers. Despite being overpowered by Sukuna and Todo, Megumi never passed out or backed down.
Even after sustaining severe injuries, such as a cursed bud attack from Hanami or head trauma from a Finger Bearer, he continued to fight and push through his exhaustion. Megumi's resilience allowed him to summon Mahoraga after being grievously injured by Shigemo, and he defeated Reggie despite being heavily wounded and fatigued from earlier attacks.

Tokusa no Kage Bojutsu - Ten Shadows Technique
Megumi has a significant reserve of cursed energy, enabling him to summon various shikigami and enhance his physical abilities in battle. Even in prolonged battles, he seldom exhausts his energy reserves completely. His ability to create a domain and call forth strong shikigami illustrates his remarkable proficiency in controlling cursed energy.
However, Megumi Fushiguro has only 1 innate technique called Tokusa no Kage Bojutsu (Ten Shadows Technique). He inherited this technique from the Zen'in Clan, enabling him to use his shadows as a conduit to call out up to 10 potential shikigami. Additionally, it gives him complete control over shadows, enabling Megumi to conceal himself in shadows or conceal items in his own shadow.
The shikigami he summons are mostly animals, and they include:
Nue – Nue: This is an owl-looking shikigami that has electro-shock wings and can carry people over short distances. Nue is mainly used to support other shikigami or for scouting purposes.
Gama – Toad: This is a big toad shikigami that’s often used for catching people and throwing them through the air with its lengthy, strong tongue. If necessary, Toad can carry a whole individual in its mouth or drag Megumi or others to safety.
Gyokuken – Divine Dogs: These twin canine shikigami possess exceptional tracking abilities thanks to their powerful noses and lethal fangs and claws designed for killing curses. The white dog was put down in action, but its abilities were passed on to its black twin.
Gyokuken: Kon – Divine Dogs: Totality: This is an advanced form of the original Divine Dogs shikigami. When the white dog was destroyed by a Finger Bearer, its essence and abilities merged with the remaining black dog, creating a more powerful version with heightened speed, agility, and strength. It also appears larger, more intimidating, and highly capable of dealing substantial damage, even to special grade curses.
Bansho – Max Elephant: This is a powerful shikigami capable of releasing torrents of water from its trunk, flooding areas or overwhelming enemies. Its massive size and weight also make it a potent weapon for direct physical attacks.
Orochi – Great Serpent: This is a large, snake-like shikigami used for swift and aggressive strikes in battle. Its powerful body enables it to constrict or quickly overwhelm enemies, making it a versatile asset for ambushing or restraining opponents in close combat.
Datto – Rabbit Escape: Datto summons numerous small rabbit shikigami, primarily for distraction or evasion. These quick, nimble creatures can overwhelm opponents’ attention or create openings for strategic retreats.
Seiteishirazu – The Well’s Unknown Abyss: A combination of Toad and Nue, this extension technique allows Megumi to summon a large number of winged toads to aid him in combat. Megumi may lose any amount of these flying toads without losing the power to still summon either Toad or Nue.
Yatsuka-no-Tsurugi Ikaishinsho Makora – Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga: This is the strongest yet most uncontrollable and unpredictable shikigami in the Ten Shadows Technique. No one, not even Megumi, has ever succeeded in taming Mahoraga. It is only usually used as a last resort, as Mahoraga always attacks and kills both its summoner and the opponent.
Domain Expansion - Kango An’eitei – Chimera Shadow Garden
Megumi's domain surrounds the area with flowing shadows, allowing him to quickly summon any shikigami he desires. Even though his domain is incomplete and does not possess the guaranteed-hit function, his Ten Shadows Technique functions at 120% of its usual power. This enhancement enables Megumi to create not only shikigami but also shadow clones of himself. Nevertheless, he is unable to create a barrier around the domain and must instead overlap it with an indoor area to trap his opponents within the space.
How Does it Work?
Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique is a distinctive ability passed down to him through the Zen’in bloodline. It enables him to summon and control up to ten shikigami, each symbolized by a shadow-based creature.
Before Megumi can summon a shikigami in battle, he must first dominate it in a ritual, proving his strength and control over the entity. In battle, the shikigami are summoned through the use of various symbolic hand signs and the shadows they cast. Megumi can merge his own shadow with theirs, allowing for inventive strategies, including surprising his opponents with unexpected assaults.
When a shikigami is defeated in battle, its strength is passed on to the surviving shikigami, enhancing their abilities. This technique demands a high level of skill, as each summon draws upon cursed energy. Mastery enables Megumi to command multiple shikigami at once or even combine them into new forms, such as Divine Dog: Totality.
The technique, though powerful, has its limitations—elimination of a shikigami results in permanent loss of that shikigami, and realizing its full potential necessitates mastery over all ten shadows, which is quite challenging.
Megumi | Fan Reception
Megumi Fushiguro enjoys widespread popularity among Jujutsu Kaisen fans, often ranking high in popularity polls. His calm demeanor, intelligence, and loyalty appeal strongly to audiences who appreciate his contrast to more impulsive characters like Yuji. Fans admire his Ten Shadows Technique, particularly the versatility and mystery it adds to his combat style.
However, some critics suggest that Megumi’s reserved personality can sometimes limit emotional engagement, leaving his character somewhat enigmatic. His vast potential, hinted at by his mentor Gojo, adds intrigue, with fans speculating on his growth and future strength. As the series progresses, audiences eagerly await the depths Megumi’s character and abilities will reach, drawn to his blend of mystery, skill, and untapped power.
