Just like Levi Ackermann in Attack on Titan or Killua Zoldyck in Hunter X Hunter, Satoru Gojo has become the undisputed face of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime series.

Satoru Gojo is undoubtedly one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most interesting and loved characters, whose abilities defy logic and make him highly respected and feared by friends and foes alike. But beyond his abilities, what kind of person is he? How do his feared techniques like Infinity and Limitless work? What makes Satoru Gojo who he is? Let’s take a full dive in and understand all there is to understand about his techniques, abilities, and all that fans want to know about Satoru Gojo.

Who is Satoru Gojo?

Satoru Gojo is the main character of the Jujutsu Kaisen movie and an overarching protagonist in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime series. He is the series’ strongest sorcerer and is also Sukuna’s archenemy. He is the leader of the Gojo Clan, which is one of the three big clans in the Jujutsu community, being the first descendant of his family to have the Six Eyes and Limitless, both of which are extremely rare and powerful abilities.

He teaches at the Jujutsu High School in Tokyo, and, like many other sorcerers, is dedicated to protecting the world from the activities of cursed spirits. He is also one of those who see the structure of the Jujutsu community as defective and is aimed at changing this through nurturing generations of skilled and like-minded Jujutsu Sorcerers.

Satoru Gojo | Physical Appearance

Satoru Gojo is a notably well-built, tall, and lean young man. He stands over 6 feet (around 190 cm or more), which lends him an imposing yet charismatic presence.  His most distinctive characteristic is his snow-white hair, usually styled in a slightly messy, spiky fashion, although it can hang down in a more casual manner when he isn't wearing his blindfold or sunglasses.  His white hair is a characteristic linked to his remarkable heritage and strength.

Satoru’s eyes stand out as a defining feature: they are a striking, intense sky-blue, frequently depicted as glowing or shimmering as a result of his immense cursed energy and the Six Eyes ability.  These eyes are often concealed by a black blindfold in later appearances or dark, round sunglasses in earlier ones, portraying his enigmatic and laid-back aura.  When revealed, his eyes are captivating and profound, giving him an ethereal presence.

He usually wears the standard Jujutsu High uniform, which is a high-collared black jacket and matching pants, yet he carries it with a casual flair.  He has fair skin, well-defined facial features, and a confident, nearly playful expression.

Satoru Gojo | Personality 

Satoru Gojo is one of the most interesting characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is charismatic yet cruel, goofy and lighthearted yet quite serious when necessary. He has a relaxed, even playful manner among his students and friends, frequently making jokes and teasing them. When he interacts with the sorcerer executives, whom he despises, his attitude completely changes. He doesn't hide his disdain for the higher-ups, like Principal Gakuganji, and has little tolerance for the inflexible, antiquated system that controls the Jujutusu community.  

However, Satoru firmly feels that he is unbeatable, his self-confidence verging on arrogance. His perception of other people is mostly based on their skills. He frequently shows little consideration for individuals he considers weak. Nevertheless, there are times when his humanity comes through in spite of this godlike superiority.

Satoru is unrelenting in combat and takes great pride in his superior strength. His forceful and showy combat technique is intended to subjugate his opponents. Whenever he’s combating opponents, he’d always rather not to injure innocent people directly, however, he will do it if he has no other choice. This pushed Mahito to say that "Satoru Gojo is capable of cold logic." Despite his bluster, Gojo is emotionally damaged, especially after losing his best buddy Suguru Geto. His ultimate ambition, to change the Jujutusu world by training a new generation of sorcerers who can eventually equal his might, is fueled by his emotional turmoil after Geto’s betrayal.

Satoru Gojo | Growth

Satoru Gojo is a character that’s easily distinguished by his immense power and profound emotional depth. In his younger years at Tokyo Jujutsu High under Masamichi Yaga’s tutelage, he displayed a remarkable level of arrogance, firmly believing that his abilities made him invincible. He profiled everyone based on their strength, feeling no obligation whatsoever towards weaker people, and his fight with Toji Fushiguro further solidified this thought. 

After mastering his reverse cursed technique and Limitless, he named himself the strongest, exuding great pride and a nearly reckless thrill for battle. This became evident in his fighting style, as he took to overpowering enemies with sheer dominance and showcasing his skills over directly eliminating threats.

However, his mission to protect Riko Amanai marked a crucial turning point for him, forcing him to face his arrogance and he started cultivating a true sense of responsibility. Her death served as a wake-up call, disrupting his earlier indifference and compelling him to understand that strength alone wasn’t enough. While Suguru Geto responded to this tragedy by turning against humanity and the doctrines of the Jujutsu community, Gojo took a different route, realizing that his power meant he had a duty to protect those weaker than himself.

This change in ideals led him to become a teacher at Jujutsu High, hoping to reform the corrupt system by raising a new generation of sorcerers. Unlike before, he no longer sought power for his own sake but used it to challenge the status quo. While he remained playful and confident, his arrogance had toned down. He cared deeply for his students, always egging them on to reach their full potential.

Even with this growth, he maintained his contempt for the higher-ups at Jujutsu High, openly defying their authority and making it evident that he could dispose of them at will. Instead of doing that, he trusted that his students would bring about the change the Jujutsu community desperately needed. His faith in his students and allies shone through especially after he was sealed by Kenjaku. He chose not to fret over his capture, but trust in his students to rescue him. 

Satoru Gojo | Relationships

Suguru Geto | The Lost Best Friend

Satoru’s most significant relationship is with Suguru Geto, his former best friend and classmate at Jujutsu High. As students, they were nearly inseparable, sharing a strong bond and mutual respect despite their contrasting personalities. While Gojo was reckless and cocky, Geto was more composed and thoughtful.

However, their friendship shattered after the tragic events of the Hidden Inventory Arc, where the death of Riko Amanai and Gojo’s newfound abilities created a rift between them. Geto gradually lost faith in humanity and became engulfed in a sorcerer-supremacist ideology, believing the world should be purged of non-sorcerers. Gojo, on the other hand, chose to reform the system from the inside. 

Despite becoming enemies, Gojo never stopped considering Geto as his best friend. This was evident in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where he was forced to kill Geto after Geto’s defeat at the hands of Yuta and Rika. In Geto’s final moments, Gojo shares a rather intimate farewell, and a reluctance to finish him off. 

Megumi Fushiguro | Unlimited Potential

Gojo’s relationship with Megumi is quite unique compared to his other students. He took Megumi in as a child following the death of his father, Toji Fushiguro. Instead of letting the Zen’in Clan claim Megumi, Gojo ensured he would be raised outside of their toxic influence, per his father’s wishes.

Unlike his playful and teasing relationship with Yuji and Nobara, Gojo is more reserved with Megumi, treating him with subtle encouragement and tough love. He sees great potential in Megumi, much more than even Megumi sees in himself. However, he also respects Megumi’s independence and keeps their relationship as one that thrives on trust rather than outward affection.

Yuji Itadori | The Younger Brother

Gojo’s relationship with Yuji starts when he steps in to stop Yuji from being executed by the higher ups at Jujutsu High after he consumes Sukuna’s finger. He then assumes responsibility for him and chooses to teach him to be a sorcerer and help build on his potential. 

Unlike Megumi, Gojo is more openly affectionate towards Yuji, often joking around and acting like an eccentric older brother. Also, he is fiercely protective of Yuji, always defying the plots of the higher ups and trying to keep Yuji alive. 

Nobara Kugisaki | The Ideal Student

Gojo and Nobara do not share as much personal history as he does with Yuji and Megumi. However, he still treats her much like Yuji, often joking around and providing guidance in the line of duty and tutelage. While he does not express it directly, he sees potential in Nobara and values her strength. She, in turn, respects his might but never refrains from speaking her mind, often treating him with casual annoyance.

Shoko Ieiri | The Old Friend

Alongside Geto, Shoko was a classmate of Satoru in Jujutsu High when they were still students. While she isn’t exactly a close friend, she remained by Gojo’s side after Geto’s betrayal and became the medical specialist for Jujutsu High. Unlike others, she understands Gojo’s pain and the weight of his responsibilities. She also provides quiet support, never pushing him to do anything or express his emotions, making their relationship one of mutual understanding and trust.

The Jujutsu Higher-Ups (Esp. Principal Gakuganji) | The Old Guard

Satoru openly despises the conservative Jujutusu leadership, particularly Principal Gakuganji and the other unknown elders who control the society. He sees them as corrupted and outdated, clinging to old traditions that do not bode well for young sorcerers. He never fails to voice his discontent for them. 

However, while the higher-ups acknowledge his power, they also fear and seek to contain him. This leads to their decision to forbid all attempts at rescuing him after Kenjaku trapped him in the Prison Realm.

Toji Fushiguro | The Wall

Toji Fushiguro is the first person who ever kept Gojo on his toes and guard for days on end and came close to killing him. Gojo’s battle against him was one of his most defining, as Toji, despite having no cursed energy, almost succeeded in killing him, forcibly awakening his reverse cursed technique.

Sukuna | The Final Battle

When Gojo met Sukuna-possessed Yuji, he instantly recognized his power but remained confident he could defeat him. Sukuna, in turn, acknowledged Gojo as a true and interesting challenge. However, Gojo’s fight against Sukuna is his biggest and last. Their relationship is a tense dance of power and respect, peaking in their epic final battle in Shinjuku. 

This clash tested the limits of the abilities of both sorcerers, as they both were forced to use all their abilities and pushed each other to their limits. Even though Gojo was slashed in two, he died happy knowing he was capable of forcing Sukuna to go all out. Sukuna, on the other hand, acknowledged Gojo as a “magnificent” opponent he’ll never forget.

Satoru Gojo stands at the pinnacle of Jujutsu sorcery, widely recognized as the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer alive. His vast cursed energy and physical abilities made him invisible in battle and even special grade curses and sorcerers fear him, except Sukuna. His tremendous skills and development in his student years made even his best friend, Suguru Geto, acknowledge him as the strongest.

His strength has gotten to an absurd level and his very existence instills fears not only in the hearts of cursed spirits but also in Jujutsu society. This, along with his position as the leader of the Gojo Clan enables him to challenge the system and the higher-ups. 

Physical Abilities

Immense Physical Strength

Satoru possesses extraordinary physical strength, which distinguishes him as a formidable force in Jujutsu society. His sheer physical might allows him to effortlessly overpower strong opponents, as seen in some of his fights, especially against curses. He was able to hit Jogo with really devastating punches and launch him away with a single kick. He incapacitated Uraume with a single punch, one whose impact Uraume could not completely heal afterwards. Also, he was able to knock Sukuna himself unconscious using a Black Flash technique.

Close Combat 

Satoru is one of the strongest close-quarters fighters in Jujutsu Kaisen, as every fight he was involved in was always one-sided, except for Toji Fushiguro and Sukuna. Even at that, his second fight with Toji was another one-sided fight and it didn’t take him long to finish his opponent. Also, he almost killed Miguel Oduol with his bare hands during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, save for his getting disturbed by another huge cursed spirit. In that fight, he showed remarkable combat skills and barely gave Miguel breathing space or time to recover from the wave of punches and kicks he was hit with.

Peak Endurance

Satoru has incredible endurance, often displaying little to no pain even when he’s injured. When Toji Fushiguro stabbed him in the chest and then slashed his throat and body, Gojo not only survived but also used the experience to master reverse cursed technique. Years later, in his fight against Sukuna, he endured numerous slashes from Malevolent Shrine, healing himself continuously while maintaining his form. Even with serious injuries and significant blood loss, he fought effectively showcasing his remarkable strength and capacity to bounce back during the fight.

Lightning Speed and Reflexes

Satoru has incredible speed and reflexes, making him one of the fastest Jujutsu sorcerers. He moves quicker than the eye can see, easily outpacing rivals like Jogo and swiftly responding to Toji Fushiguro’s strikes. His accuracy enables him to remove a thousand transformed humans in the train station at Shibuya in less than five minutes. In his fight against Sukuna, he continually outmaneuvered his opponent, forcing him to take on a defensive stance. His incredible speed enabled him to match Sukuna, Mahoraga, and Merged Beast Agito’s movements all at once.

Intelligence

Satoru Gojo has a remarkable ability to think strategically, quickly understanding his opponents' tactics even with little information and adjusting his approach in combat. He effectively counters enemy techniques, demonstrated in his battles against curses like Hanami, Jogo, Mahito, and Choso.

During these fights, he skillfully strategized, safeguarded civilians, and reduced property damage, all while dodging attacks with remarkable speed. In the face of Sukuna, Gojo crafted a plan to survive the unyielding attack of Malevolent Shrine, employing reverse cursed technique and Simple Domain to restore his powers. His creative strategy in battle, which involves changing the conditions of the domain in unexpected ways, makes him a very brilliant fighter.

Jujutsu Techniques

Vast Cursed Energy Stores

Satoru’s remarkable superiority as a Jujutusu sorcerer arises primarily from his unparalleled capacity of cursed energy, as well as his adeptness in its manipulation, output, and reinforcement. His extensive reserves enable him to use his domain techniques up to five times daily, an achievement unattainable for the majority of sorcerers. In prolonged battles, like his clash with Sukuna, Gojo consistently strengthened himself and used really powerful techniques, all while displaying no indications of fatigue.

His command of cursed energy manipulation is elevated by the Six Eyes, providing him with remarkable efficiency.  He can use his domain for just split seconds, activate the reverse cursed technique, and simultaneously control multiple Blues and Reds (This will all make sense later). His precision is so refined that he experiences almost no unnecessary cursed energy loss, maintaining Limitless active at all times while continuously healing himself with reverse cursed technique to avoid fatigue and being hindered by injuries.

Gojo also demonstrates remarkable skill in cursed energy amplification, utilizing it to enhance his physical capabilities. As a student, he managed to avert fatal harm from Toji’s sword by strengthening his body. As an adult, his strength enables him to overpower special grade curses through sheer physical might, launching or piercing foes with devastating blows.

Kokusen – Black Flash

This is a rare and powerful phenomenon/technique that occurs when a sorcerer delivers a physical attack followed by cursed energy within an exact timeframe of a millionth of a second after the physical punch hits. This enhances the attack’s power by 2.5 times its usual effectiveness, resulting in a unique black spark or distortion in space. Based on Satoru Gojo’s abilities, it enhances his focus and connection to cursed energy, often pushing him to an elevated state of awareness known as “the zone.” 

Mugen – Infinity

Mugen is the neutral form of the Limitless, often misunderstood as a technique that stops attacks. In reality, it slows them down infinitely, preventing anything from reaching him. When an object or person attempts to strike Gojo, they hit the space between them and him instead. This concept is based on Achilles and the tortoise paradox, where infinite divisions prevent true contact. Initially, Gojo always had to activate Infinity manually, but by his third year, he had become so adept at it that he set it to be constantly active, automatically discerning threats.

Mukagen – Limitless

This is one of the techniques passed down in the Gojo Clan, aside from the Six Eyes. Limitless grants Gojo virtually absolute control over space (his immediate surroundings) by manipulating cursed energy at a minuscule level, leading to various aftereffects and techniques that grant a broader ability. The manipulation of space serves as the foundational aspect of the technique, with Limitless encompassing a non-standard form and three other standard forms.

Jutsushiki Junten: Ao – Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue

This is the enhanced variation of the neutral Mugen (Limitless). Blue is a technique that emerges as a result of Gojo intensifying Limitless together with negative cursed energy, resulting in a vacuum. In this process, Gojo orchestrates a situation where the world (mainly his direct surroundings) is compelled to rectify itself and occupy the negative space, leading to the convergence of all matter within the designated area. This manifests as a blue orb that distorts the surrounding area, capable of crushing or displacing anything caught in its range with immense destructive power.

Jutsushiki Junten: Aka – Cursed Technique Lapse: Red

Red produces the opposite impact since it is the opposite of blue. To use this technique, Satoru inverts Blue's components and ignites the diversion of Infinity by channeling the positive energy from his reverse cursed technique into the Limitless technique. Appearing as a small red orb, this creates an incredibly strong repelling force that blasts enemies away. Also, Red produces at least double the amount of energy as Blue does.

Jutsushiki Junten Shutsuryoku Saidai: Ao – Cursed Technique Lapse Maximum Cursed Energy Output: Blue

This is the advanced application of Satoru Gojo's Limitless technique, pushing the attractive force of Blue to its absolute peak. By creating a center of gravity in a specific space, Satoru generates a powerful vacuum-like pull, dragging in all matter and crushing it effortlessly, much like a black hole. He can manipulate this gravitational point at will, vastly augmenting its destructive power, allowing him to destroy large areas and overpower even the strongest opponents with ease.

Kyoshiki: Murasaki – Hollow Technique: Purple 

This technique combines his Cursed Techniques Lapse: Blue and Reversal: Red within the Limitless framework. By merging the attractive and repulsive forces, it creates a devastating imaginary mass that obliterates everything in its path. Manifesting as a big purple blast, Purple erases matter on contact, making it one of Gojo's most destructive and unstoppable techniques.

Hanten Jutsushiki – Reverse Cursed Technique 

This technique allows Satoru Gojo to transform cursed energy into positive energy, allowing him to heal himself or others. This unique skill stands apart from conventional cursed techniques that cause harm; instead, it transforms the harmful essence of cursed energy, rapidly healing wounds and mitigating damage. He learned it the moment Toji Fushiguro almost killed him.

Gojo uses it to sustain his nearly invincible state, having only mastered it following his initial battle with Toji Fushiguro. In that moment, he needed to access the core of cursed energy to amplify his Limitless with Hollow Purple and Red while teetering on the brink of death. Unlike others who can perform the same technique, Satoru Gojo has the superior ability to utilize it to replenish his cursed energy just when he is on the verge of exhaustion. 

Muryokusho – Unlimited Void 

Upon activation, Satoru’s Domain Expansion establishes a metaphysical environment that inundates the victims with a continuous flow of imagery and information, constraining their mode of thought and actions. Comparing raw strength, Unlimited Void matches Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine internally, only falling short because the latter's open domain enabled Sukuna to breach the Unlimited Void's.

Satoru possesses exceptional mastery over his Domain Expansion, enabling him to activate it with precision for however long or short he wants, even if it’s just 0.2 seconds. This remarkable control minimizes the duration of its impact on those caught within, while also allowing him to effortlessly modify the conditions of his domain's barrier. This makes him and those he touches unharmed by its influence.

Shin Kageryu: Kan’i Ryoki – New Shadow Style: Simple Domain 

This is an anti-domain technique that creates a small barrier around him, neutralizing the sure-hit effect of an enemy’s Domain Expansion. Used during his fight against Sukuna, it temporarily shielded him from Malevolent Shrine’s slashes, buying time to recover his cursed energy, though it couldn’t fully withstand Sukuna’s power.

Rakka no Jo – Falling Blossom Emotion 

This is a secret anti-domain technique that’s only passed down to the members of the Three Big Families of the Jujutsu community. Upon application, it envelops the user with cursed energy that instantly neutralizes the guaranteed-hit effect of whatever domain they’re trapped in by targeting all cursed energy-based attacks. However, its effectiveness is also subservient to the strength of the domain wherein it is used, as it might not be able to completely neutralize attacks in an incredibly strong domain like Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine, but only reduce the damage they’d cause. 

Tobari – Curtain 

Satoru has the ability to create barriers that enclose specific areas.  The barrier has the capability to isolate the area from others or from a particular individual attempting to enter. Also, the effects that are often overlayed on the barriers prevent anyone outside it from seeing whatever is going on inside.

Rikugan – Six Eyes

Just like the Limitless, this is also another inherited technique sometimes found among members of the Gojo Clan. However, Satoru Gojo is the only member of the family to have this ability in over 400 years. The Six Eyes are a rare and extraordinary trait, endowing him with exceptional abilities that elevate his prowess as a sorcerer. This ocular gift provides razor-sharp perception and meticulous control over cursed energy, functioning like advanced infrared vision even when concealed by his blindfold. Through the Six Eyes, Gojo can sense his surroundings via cursed energy currents and discern the mechanics of any sorcerer’s technique, giving him a strategic edge in combat.

The precision offered by Six Eyes allows Gojo to use his cursed techniques with unmatched efficiency, minimizing energy waste to near-zero levels. This optimization means he expends far less cursed energy than others while executing identical techniques, which is a crucial advantage in prolonged battles. The Six Eyes are indispensable for mastering the Limitless technique, enabling him to seamlessly integrate its complex applications—Blue, Red, and Hollow Purple—into his arsenal. 

Warping (Teleportation)

Satoru Gojo warps using his Limitless technique, specifically its application of Blue, which functions as a form of advance spatial manipulation. He effectively compresses the distance between himself and his destination, creating a sort of “wormhole” effect. While he’s shown clasping or clapping his hands in some instances, it doesn’t mean to be a strict requirement for all teleportation. Also, he can choose a partner to teleport with him, or even use the technique on others, and teleport them to another place instead of himself.

Satoru Gojo is undoubtedly one of the most captivating sorcerers from Jujutsu Kaisen and has won the admiration of fans globally with his unparalleled strength, playful personality, and attractive character design. His reception is highly favorable, as he is frequently recognized as the series’ standout character due to his perfect combination of arrogance, loyalty, and humor.  Fans appreciate his role as a mentor to Yuji Itadori and his flawless power in battles, exemplified by his legendary confrontation with Sukuna, solidifying his reputation as the "Strongest." In popularity polls, Gojo’s rankings showcase the attention he receives.  He secured 3rd place in the initial Weekly Shonen Jump poll with 16,923 votes, advanced to 2nd in the second poll with 14,359 votes, fell back to 3rd in the third poll with 11,591 votes, and won 1st place in the fourth poll with an impressive 113,392 votes, which was a remarkable accomplishment for any Shonen Jump character.
