Generation VII of Pokémon brought players to the tropical paradise of Alola. Based on Hawaii, it’s a group of islands with tons of new Pokémon and a completely new style of gym battles. Although things look peaceful on the surface, there was something coming for the region. Something extradimensional. Something ultra. Something you can now find in the latest card pack from the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket app.

Pokémon Ultra Beasts | Sun and Moon

Ultra Beasts first started appearing around Alola about ten years before the events of Sun and Moon. After several unsuccessful attempts from the International Police to capture them, the Aether Foundation began to research them. The Foundation also began to name the creatures, eschewing the code names that the International Police gave them.
Professor Mohn at the Aether Foundation was the first to actually discover the Ultra Wormholes. He also discovered Cosmog, a legendary Pokémon in the Alola region that can create these wormholes. While researching Ultra Space, the land on the other side of the wormholes, he finds a new Pokémon called Nihilego. Shortly after, he is sucked into Ultra Space, never to be seen again.
His wife and president of the Aether Foundation, Lusamine, continued to find ways to reach Ultra Space and catch the creatures on the other side. They created the legendary Pokémon Type: Null and Silvally to combat the Ultra Beasts if they ever made it to Alola. They also created Beast Balls which are the only balls that will work on Ultra Beasts. However, Lusamine’s work on Ultra Beasts would become her downfall.
During the events of the game, Lusamine fused with Nihilego and used Cosmog to open Ultra Wormholes all over Alola. Of course, she’s eventually defeated. After you become champion of the region, you are approached by the International Police’s UB Task Force to go on different missions around Alola to subdue these seven Ultra Beasts.
Before we go further, yes, Solgaleo and Lunala are technically Ultra Beasts, along with Necrozma. However, they will not be included on this list as they are considered legendary and not part of the Ultra Beast species. Now, let's look into these Pokémon-like creatures!
Nihilego | #793

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
First to be discovered, parasitic, fuses with Lusamine |
Ultra Deep Sea |
High special and speed stats, but glaring weaknesses |
Lore
Nihilego is a main antagonist of Sun and Moon. It’s acting out of instinct, trying to stay alive in this strange world. In its fear, it takes control of Lusamine, opening up Ultra Wormholes all over Alola. To do this, it latches onto Lusamine’s head and uses its neurotoxin to boost her powers and abilities.
Nihilego resembles Lusamine’s daughter, Lillie. They have a somewhat similar design and the Pokédex even states that it can be “observed behaving like a little girl.” This may be why Lusamine is so obsessed with Ultra Beasts and Nihilego in particular.
Nihilego is probably based on an invasive species of jellyfish called the Phyllorhis punctata which can be found around Hawaii. It has a similar bell-shaped head and long flowing tentacles. The International Police gave it the designation UB-01 Symbiont (UB01 Parasite in Japanese). This is due to its ability to latch on to other beings and take control of them.
Homeworld
Nihilego comes from the Ultra Deep Sea. This area is said to be thousands of light-years from Alola. Like the name suggests, it resembles the bottom of the ocean with many caves and colorful rocks.
Stats
Nihilego is a Rock/Poison type. This means it has a quad weakness to Ground and regular weaknesses to Steel, Water, and Psychic. All quad weaknesses are bad, but Ground types are abundant in Alola. Other than that, Nihilego has decent special stats (Special Attack at 127 and Special Defense at 131) and a 103 Speed stat. Those are pretty great.
If it wasn’t for the glaring weaknesses, I’d say this would be a good addition to the team.
Buzzwole | #794

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Mosquito that strikes poses | Linked to Celesteela |
Ultra Jungle |
High physical stats and great moveset |
Lore
Buzzwole did not skip the gym, that’s for sure. Its main ability is to absorb energy from other Pokémon using its proboscis. This makes its muscles grow to huge sizes. It can then convert that energy into stat boosts. Buzzwole strike poses in order to communicate with each other and that is the best piece of Pokémon lore out there.
This is clearly based on a mosquito, which is an invasive species worldwide. The International Police gave it the designation UB-02 Absorption (Expansion in Japanese). It's also the mascot for the Pokémon TCG Pocket card pack, Extradimensional Crisis.
Homeworld
Buzzwole calls the Ultra Jungle its home. The area of Ultra Space resembles a jungle with tall trees shaped like flexing torsos. There is also a volcano in the center of the island which Buzzwoles like to flock to.
Stats
Buzzwole is a Bug/Fighting type, which you probably could have guessed by looking at it. It is a physical Pokémon with high Attack and Defense stats (139 each). It has a quad weakness to Flying. Its moveset is really good, especially if you need a hard hitter on your team.
For a gimmicky design, it really does pack quite a punch! Well worth a spot on your team.
Pheromosa | #795

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
The most beautiful Ultra Beast | Linked to Buzzwole |
Ultra Desert |
Attacker with very high speed |
Lore
Pheromosa is considered the most beautiful of all the Ultra Beasts. Heck, even the International Police named it UB-02 Beauty. This may be because of its… striking appearance(?), but it is most likely due to the pheromones that it spews from its body. It will also confuse an opponent due to its beauty (or pheromones). It’s also haughty, refusing to touch anything for fear of getting dirty. Pheromosa is incredibly fast, reaching speeds of up to 120 miles per hour.
Pheromosa is most likely based on the American cockroach. After the cockroach molts, it becomes completely white. Its name is a combination of pheromone and hermosa, which is Spanish for beautiful.
Homeworld
Pheromosa is from the Ultra Desert. It’s full of crystals and sands that flow like water. There are tall cliffs and boulders that can be moved using Machamp Shove.
Stats
Pheromosa, like her Pokédex entry suggests, is incredibly fast. It has a Speed stat of 151 which is nuts. Pheromosa is the definition of a glass cannon, high attack and very low defense. Its Attack and Special Attack stats are 137 and Defense and Special Defense are 37. On top of that, it’s another Fighting/Bug type so it has a quad weakness to Flying. Overall, might be a good idea to skip this one.
Xurkitree | #796

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Essentially an electric tree in Ultra Space |
Ultra Plant |
High Special Attacker with great typing |
Lore
Xurkitree is, in essence, a tree that conducts electricity. When in its homeworld, it stands still for long periods of time and gathers energy in its body. Most Pokémon of the same species are roughly the same size, but Xurkitree can range from human sized to the size of a mountain. It can discharge a million volts of power due to its cable-like body.
Xurkitree isn’t based on an invasive species, but it resembles power lines. It even has three-pronged plugs for hands and feet. In a way, it’s representative of the most invasive species of all: the human.
Homeworld
Xurkitree is found in Ultra Plant. It’s a dark, lightning scarred world deep in Ultra Space.
Stats
Xurkitree is a pure Electric type, so it has a really great type effectiveness chart. It has the highest Special Attack (173) of all Electric type Pokémon. However, it comes at the cost of all the other stats. The rest of them are between 71-89. Ultimately, I think it’s a good teammate if only for that incredible Special Attack.
Celesteela | #797

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
After growing, it flies off into space | Linked to Kartana |
Ultra Crater |
Solid stats all around, but slow |
Lore
Celesteela grows like a plant on its homeworld. After growing, it rockets out of the ground and into space. Why? No one knows! It can store tons of energy in its body which bursts from its arms like rocket jets.
Celesteela is based on Princess Kaguya. Kaguya was found in a bamboo stalk as a baby and is originally from the moon. As Celesteela looks like a bamboo and rocket combination, it makes sense. Not only that, it even looks like it is wearing a kimono.
Homeworld
Celesteela is from Ultra Crater. This area is full of, well, craters. There are tons of large metal pipes and geysers strewn about.
Stats
Celesteela is a very unique Steel/Flying type, giving it two immunities to Poison and Ground. It has tons of resistances as well. Its base stats are pretty solid as well. They range from 97-107 with Speed being the lowest at 61. Despite the slow Speed, this is a really solid Pokémon with a cool design. Definitely recommended.
Kartana | #798

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Very quick and sharp, looks like origami | Linked to Celesteela |
Ultra Forest |
Very high Attack, Defense, and Speed |
Lore
Kartana are incredibly thin, sharp Ultra Beasts. It’s light and quick, allowing it to avoid attacks with ease. It can cut steel towers with a single strike. It also opens Ultra Wormholes as well as speak to humans. Well, in reverse.
Homeworld
Kartana lives in Ultra Forest, a world that resembles a giant Japanese rock garden.
Stats
Kartana has one of the highest Attack stats in the game at 181. Its Defense is 131 and Speed is 109. The Pokédex wasn’t lying, this thing is a beast. Unless you have a Fire type. Kartana is a Steel/Grass type meaning it is quad weak to Fire moves. Otherwise, it has a high amount of resistances and an immunity to Poison. Despite the special and HP stats being low, it is well worth adding to your team.
Guzzlord | #799

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Eats everything, but doesn’t poop |
Ultra Ruin |
Extremely high HP |
Lore
Guzzlord is the definition of a beast. It can (and will) eat everything in its path. We’re talking buildings, Pokémon, rivers, mountains, everything. It eats and eats and never stops. Most importantly, no matter how much it eats, no droppings have ever been found. This means that it most likely has a perfect digestion system, fully converting everything it eats into energy. The International Police hit the nail on the head with their name: UB-05 Glutton.
Guzzlord is based on the creatures found in Lovecraftian stories. It’s a beast that won’t stop devouring the world it is in until there is nothing left but wastelands.
Homeworld
Guzzlord can be found in Ultra Ruin. However, it is said that Guzzlord was from somewhere else through an Ultra Wormhole. Once it was there, it ate everything around it, leaving it as a destroyed wasteland. Originally, Ultra Ruin was a futuristic version of Hau’oli City in Alola, but in a different dimension.
Stats
Guzzlord is a Dark/Dragon type. This gives it a quad weakness to Fairy, but an immunity to Psychic. As for stats, Guzzlord has an insanely high HP stat at 223. Attack and Special Attack are the next highest at 101 and 97 respectively. Low defensive and Speed stats make it a hard one to fit on a team. However, if you need a tank, you can’t get much better than Guzzlord.
Pokémon Ultra Beasts | Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

The Ultra Beasts of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon play a similar role to their counterparts in Sun and Moon. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are upgraded versions of the original game with a slightly different storyline. The main difference between the versions is who opens the Ultra Wormholes. In these games, Necrozma, after fusing with Solgaleo or Lunala, begins to open the Ultra Wormholes around Alola instead of Lusamine.
After becoming champion, the player leave the Pokémon world and go interdimensional. They can ride the Ultra Warp Ride and visit various Homeworlds in Ultra Space. While there, players can find all sorts of different Pokémon not normally found in the region, along with Ultra Beasts in their natural habitats.
Poipole | #803

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Popular starter Pokémon in its own world |
Ultra Megalopolis |
Pretty basic stats |
Lore
Poipole is essentially the Pikachu of Ultra Space. It’s an incredibly popular Ultra Beast in its homeworld and is often chosen as a starter Pokémon. Its head is full of poison that can stick to anything. It cackles maniacally as it sprays poison on its enemies.
Poipole is based on a bee larva which makes sense since its evolved form, Naganadel, resembles a wasp or hornet. It also behaves like a bee as it tends to group together with other Poipoles in a nest.
Homeworld
Poipole can be found in Ultra Megalopolis. This is a huge city full of giant black buildings with no real sun. Megalo Tower is in the center of the city which is an artificial sun. The city is dark due to Necrozma stealing all the light.
Stats
Poipole is a pure Poison type. It’s also a basic Pokémon, so the stats aren’t great yet. HP, Defense, and Special Defense are 67. Attack, Special Attack, and Speed are 73. Not great, but not too shabby either! Let’s see what Naganadel shapes up to be.
Naganadel | #804

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Evolves from Poipole |
Ultra Megalopolis |
High Special Attack and Speed |
Lore
Naganadel evolves from Poipole. It’s the only Ultra Beast that evolves. It has a stinger that can shoot poison up to six miles away. Its brain is in the lower half of its body. It is based on the tarantula hawk wasp in design.
Homeworld
Naganadel can’t be found organically in any homeworld as it evolves from Poipole. It can evolve if it levels up while knowing the move Dragon Pulse.
Stats
Naganadel is a Poison/Dragon type. I’ll be honest, this may be good for Ash, but not for me. Apart from Special Attack (127) and Speed (121), the rest of its stats are 73 each. It’s got a weird typing, not a lot of great moves, and mid stats which make this a hard sell for me. Cool design, though.
Stakataka | #805

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Comprised of many organisms |
Unknown |
Crazy high Defense and crazy low Speed |
Lore
Stakataka isn’t just one Ultra Beast. Oh no. It’s actually about 150 brick-like creatures stacked together. Due to this, it’s believed that Stakataka is based on a type of zooid, which is a creature made up of smaller organisms. Its inside is hollow so it can capture prey or enemies inside.
Homeworld
Stakataka doesn’t have a canonical homeworld. However, it can be found in Ultra Moon at Poni Grove after you become champion.
Stats
Stakataka is a Rock/Steel type so it’s got some great resistances. Not only that, it is highly defensive with a Defense stat at a whopping 211. It has high Attack and Special Defense as well. Where’s the drawback?! Well, it has a Speed of 13. As in 3 more than 10. It is so incredibly slow. Other than that, it’s a really solid addition to the team!
Blacephalon | #806

Lore |
Homeworld |
Stats |
Just a wacky dude |
Unknown |
High Special Attack and Attack |
Lore
Blacephalon is essentially a clown. It looks like a clown, it acts like a clown, it blows its head up to steal the lifeforce of its enemies like a clown. Wait, that last one might just be Blacephalon. Yes, this clown will trick an opponent by walking silly then explode its head which allows it to steal lifeforce from them. Absolutely bananas. It’s the only Ultra Beast that has a signature move. It is called, I kid you not, Mind Blown.
Homeworld
Blacephalon, like Stakataka, does not have a canon homeworld. It can be found in Ultra Sun at Poni Grove after becoming champion.
Stats
Blacephalon is a Fire/Ghost type. This gives it a pretty great resistance chart and makes it immune to Normal and Fighting types. Its stats are incredible as well. High Special Attack (151), Attack (127), and Speed (107) make up for its lackluster HP and Defense stats (53). This wacky clown monster is a perfect addition to any team.
