1. Guns or Treasure - Best Pirate-Themed Card Game
Our Rating: 5/5
Let’s start our list of the best card games for kids with a fun yet strategic pick: Guns or Treasure.
Guns or Treasure is a thrilling pirate card game full of strategy, daring moves, and clever bluffing. Designed for kids and families, this game puts players to the test as they hide treasure, load their cannons, and choose the perfect moment to strike. With easy-to-follow rules and action-packed gameplay, this game is quick to learn and keeps everyone engaged. Whether you're a sharp-witted captain or a crafty first mate, Guns or Treasure promises endless fun, surprises, and plenty of laughs along the way.
Plot of the Game
In Guns or Treasure, you and your friends are pirate captains on a mission to collect as much treasure as possible. But there’s a catch; you’re not the only ones hunting for riches, and some pirates will stop at nothing to steal your loot! Every turn, you have to decide: do you collect treasure or load up on cannons to defend your ship?
Play it safe, and you might end up rich, or get attacked by a rival. Go for guns and bombs, and you could sink enemy ships but miss out on treasure.
It’s a fun, fast-paced game of strategy, luck, and just the right amount of pirate trickery. Will you be the richest pirate on the high seas, or will your ship go down in a fiery battle The choice is yours, matey!!
How to Play
Each player starts with 6 cards in their hand. These cards can represent ship parts whether they are guns, bombs, or treasure. The goal of the game is to strategically build ships using the cards, load them with treasure and guns, and either battle other players or escape with your loot.
Phase 1: Ship Building
In the first phase, players choose 3 cards from their hand to play and place them face-down in front of them. These cards will be part of their ships.
After playing 3 cards, they draw 3 new ones.
You repeat this process until each player has played a total of 12 cards.
You can choose to build multiple ships, focus on one, or a few strong ships: it’s up to your strategy!
Phase 2: Marauding
Once all players have placed their 12 cards, it’s time to flip over your cards and reveal your ships when going into battle.
Starting with the first player and going clockwise, everyone takes a turn. On your first turn of the battle phase, you must attack another player's ship. You reveal your ship's cards and the ship with the most amount of guns wins the battle and gains all the treasure from both ships.
After your first attack, you can either attack another ship or simply escape with your ship's treasure!
Phase 3: Scoring and Winning
After all ships have either been destroyed or have escaped, each player totals up the treasure they've managed to secure. The player with the most treasure wins the game!
