1. Rescuing Robin Hood - Best Family Game
Our Rating: 5/5
Let’s start our list of the best cooperative board games with one of the most enjoyable and fun games out there, Rescuing Robin Hood.
We’ve all grown up reading books and watching cartoons where Robin Hood steals from the rich and gives to the poor. However, this board game comes with a little twist: Robin Hood needs your help!
That’s right! This time, the tables have turned, and it’s up to you and your friends to rescue the heroic outlaw from the clutches of the villainous sheriff of Nottingham. With its blend of strategy, teamwork, and a touch of medieval charm, this game is perfect for families and seasoned gamers alike. Whether you're a fan of Robin Hood or just looking for a cooperative game with a twist, Rescuing Robin Hood is sure to provide hours of enjoyable gameplay.
Plot of the Game
What’s the game about? Well, the sheriff has arrested Robin Hood, and it's up to you and your fellow Merry Band members to rescue him. The sheriff of Nottingham has arrested many villagers because of high taxes. The villagers are desperate for help from Robin Hood. However, there is a problem: the sheriff has also captured Robin Hood!
However, we have a plan! The leaders of Robin Hood's Merry Band, Little John, Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, and others, gather together a band of villagers to get Robin Hood out.
Players represent these bold leaders, each with unique abilities and attributes. Over the course of five days, players must work together to rescue captured villagers and build their band of rescuers. Each rescued villager joins your quest, making your band stronger. Finally, on the fifth day, players choose their Elite Band to storm Nottingham Castle and attempt to rescue Robin Hood.
Characters in the Game
One charming aspect of Rescuing Robin Hood is its cast of characters. Each character has unique skills and personal traits. First, we have Little John, the strong fighter who uses Brawn to easily fight off the sheriff’s guards. Then there’s Maid Marian, a clever fighter who uses her Wit to easily take down enemies. Friar Tuck is a jolly man with 2 prayer skills to move or remove guards. Lady Christabel a stealthy warrior who also gives bonuses to your Cookery.
But those are just the members of the Merry Band. Besides these main characters, we also have some villagers with interesting punny names:
- Waldew Respect, a pun for “With Due Respect,” is one of the villagers that you can save from the sheriff and recruit in your band.
- Warren Peace (War and Peace) is another villager in the sheriff’s custody.
- Then we have Anne Dittover, which is a very clever pun for “Hand it Over.”
- And frankly my dear, the pun name Frank Le Mydear was just too easy!
- Sir Render (Surrender) is another villager with quite a straightforward pun name.
- Also, there is Hugh Jeego... it's your turn to try to figure out what it means!
So, while playing the game itself is quite adventurous, figuring out how to pronounce each character’s pun name and what it means adds an extra layer of fun to the whole experience! There are 89 unique characters in all, and about half of them have quite punny names!
How to Play It
Rescuing Robin Hood is played over 5 rounds, each representing one day. Players use their cards to battle the guards, rescuing villagers and adding them to their team. The game involves strategic planning, resource management, and a bit of luck. Players must decide when to push their luck with the Wit card, use the Stealth card to target specific guards or go all-in with the Brawn card.
Why We Like It
We think Rescuing Robin Hood is one of the best cooperative board games for many reasons. For starters, this game encourages teamwork, making it great for families or friends who like to play together. Instead of competing against each other, players collaborate, which creates a sense of unity. Secondly, the game’s theme is inspired by the classic Robin Hood story, giving it an exciting twist.
Coming to the rules; they are simple, making the game easy to play for younger players. However, it also offers enough depth to keep adults engaged. Another great feature is its replayability. Different characters, strategies, and random elements ensure that each game feels unique. Finally, the beautiful artwork and high-quality components bring Sherwood Forest to life, offering an enjoyable experience for everyone!
