We're a small business in Wisconsin!
Robin Hood has been captured by the Sheriff! It’s up to you and your band of merry men to rally your forces and storm Nottingham Castle, defeat the Sheriff’s guards, and try to rescue the legendary outlaw before it’s too late.
In this Rescuing Robin Hood review, we're exploring how this clever, cooperative game blends strategy, storytelling, and action as well as what we liked and thought could be better. It’s a perfect pick for game nights with family and friends who love medieval themes, creative games, and the story of Robin Hood.
Rescuing Robin Hood is a cooperative game for 1 to 5 players where you save villagers, recruit them, and rescue Robin Hood from the Sheriff of Nottingham. It’s mathy in a fun way, full of charm, and perfect for families, friends, and co-op-loving game groups.

Rescuing Robin Hood is a cooperative adventure board game for 1 to 5 players. The Sheriff of Nottingham has captured Robin Hood, and it’s up to you and your fellow players to save him. Over the course of five days—or rounds—you’ll work together to defeat the sheriff’s guards, rescue captured villagers, and build up your own merry band of heroes. On the final day, you'll launch a daring mission to storm Nottingham Castle and rescue Robin Hood himself. Teamwork, strategy, and a bit of luck are key to pulling off this heroic rescue.

We have a more in-depth guide on how to play Rescuing Robin Hood for those who want a more deep-dive into it.
Players begin each day by setting up the battlefield using a scenario card, which are labeled for each round. Once the battlefield is set, players reveal the top guard card in each row, draw four villagers from their own deck, and calculate their attributes–Wit, Stealth, Brawn, and Jolliness–alongside their band leader’s stats. Jolliness can be applied to boost the other three attributes.

Next, the player gains Skill Tokens (Scouting, Cookery, and Prayer) based on their villager cards. These tokens can be used to reveal guard cards, adjust stats, or manipulate the guard layout. The Cookery token is flipped to Meade for the next round, which provides extra Jolliness.
Once players have calculated their attributes and utilized their Skill Tokens, they move on to the attack phase. Each player makes two back-to-back attacks using one of the three attributes. Wit allows sequential attacks against guards in a row until failure (think Blackjack); Stealth targets as many guards on one row and defeats them if their Stealth is greater or equal to the guards; Brawn challenges all guards in the entire row at once.
Successfully clearing an entire row of guards rescues the villager being held by that respective row's guards. Unrescued villagers are sent to Nottingham Castle. At the end of the day, all tokens are discarded (except Mead), attributes are reset, guards are reshuffled, and the first player token rotates. The next day begins with a new scenario setup.

Each game of Rescuing Robin Hood offers a new experience. Different scenario cards make for unique combinations of guards, villagers, and band leaders, meaning no two games play out the same. This keeps the things challenging and engaging, encouraging replayability.
The classic Robin Hood setting provides an instant hook. Players will enjoy stepping into the roles of villagers rising up against tyranny in a well-loved medieval tale, filled with outlaws, castles, and daring rescues.
This is a true cooperative game where success depends on collaboration. Players must plan together, share resources, and make decisions as a group to overcome increasingly difficult guard lines and ultimately save Robin Hood.
The game balances tactical choices and long-term planning, making victories feel earned. It’s a refreshing take on cooperative board gaming that blends math with storytelling in a meaningful way.

The game has a lot of moving parts—attributes, Skill Tokens, guards, villagers, band leaders, scenario cards, and more—that can feel overwhelming to new players. But once you get the gameplay down and repeat it a few times, it becomes a lot easier.
While the setup changes from game to game, the core gameplay loop doesn’t evolve much over time. After several plays, some players might find the turn structure a bit predictable.
Combat and skill challenges rely on adding up numbers and managing attributes, which may feel a bit too calculation-focused for those who prefer more narrative-driven or casual, laid-back games.

While Rescuing Robin Hood supports 1-5 players, it plays best with 3-4. This count offers the best balance of teamwork and strategy with a reasonable playtime.

Rescuing Robin Hood has a clear, readable layout with a storybook art style that fits the theme. Each character in the game has a unique illustration and stats, giving the game variety and replay value.
The component quality is amazing—sturdy cards, tokens, and a well-organized box. The rulebook is approachable and full of examples to help new players get up to speed quickly. Setup also takes just a few minutes, and everything resets easily between rounds.

If you're looking for a cooperative adventure with heart, humor, and challenge, Rescuing Robin Hood is a fantastic pick. The game invites players to build a team of quirky, skillful villagers—each with their own personalities and strengths—as they work together to overcome obstacles and save Robin Hood.
What makes the experience truly memorable is the blend of light storytelling, tactical teamwork, and the satisfaction of slowly assembling your perfect rescue squad. Whether you triumph in the final showdown or fall just short of freeing Robin Hood, the journey is full of laughs, surprises, and meaningful choices. It’s a great way to connect with your family and friends and share in a story where everyone has a part to play.
