If you’re dozens of hours deep into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom like I am, you know some things can fall by the wayside. There are essentially three maps to uncover and explore, and each one has countless collectibles and hidden items for you to find.
And don’t even get me started about Korok hunting...
When you combine all of that with the main quests and finding out just what the hell is going on with Princess Zelda, you’re probably going to forget about some things. Sometimes, those are important things. Like eating. Remember that cooking mechanic from Breath of the Wild? It also got a complete overhaul and upgrade for the sequel.
But rather than make you sift through the over 200 recipes in the game, I’m going to break down six of the best meals you can make and keep stocked so you don’t have to worry about stopping in the middle of your adventure to sit in front of a boiling pot. We have a meal for every occasion, so don your chef’s hat, and let’s get started!
Hearty Steamed Mushrooms
The term “best meals” can mean different things to different people, but this particular dish is for those who want to completely recover all of the hearts they have AND add a ton of bonus hearts to their meter.
It’s called Hearty Steamed Mushrooms, and as long as you aren’t averse to the humble fungi, it’ll be in your best interest to have at least a few of them in your inventory when you set out to raid Zonai encampments or take on Gleeoks.
Here’s what you need to make Hearty Steamed Mushrooms:
-
4x Big Hearty Truffles
-
1x Big Hearty Radish
Toss all of those into a pot, and you’ll have a dish that can put you back into fighting shape after taking a 90% damage hit!
Spicy Pepper Steak
When you’re rolling through the Hebra region or exploring sky islands, sometimes you’re going to get a little chilly. There are places on the map that can get way past freezing temperatures, so you need to be prepared for that, and scrounging up the rupees for the right armor set can feel like a full-time job. Thankfully, you can cook something to fight the cold!
Before you make the leap off of the Great Sky Island, you’ll have learned that throwing a bunch of Spicy Peppers into a pot can make you resistant to cold for a period of time. That’s a great recipe to have in your back pocket, but this recipe will give you a bunch of hearts AND make you resistant to heat.
It’s called Spicy Pepper Steak, and here’s what you’ll need to make it:
-
1x Raw Meat
-
1x Spicy Pepper
Changing the quantities of both items can adjust how many hearts you recover as well as how long the cold resistance effects last, so feel free to experiment!
Chilly Mushroom Skewer
When you’re on the other side of the map exploring the Goron village and Death Mountain, the heat is going to come at you pretty quickly. There is, of course, an appropriate armor set that will make strolling around the volcanic area a breeze, but this is about cooking, dammit!
To get the highest level of heat resistance for a period of time, you can whip up a Chilly Mushroom Skewer to nosh on.
Here’s what you need to make it:
- 5x Chillshrooms
Seriously, that’s it! Toss five of those cold bois into a cooking pot and you have yourself a temporary solution for your heat-based issues. You’ll also heal five hearts by eating it!
Sunny Veggie Porridge
Sure, it’s a spooky place filled with all kinds of dangers and nightmares (ever tried fighting a Lynel in total darkness? I wouldn’t recommend it), but we all have to venture into the Depths at some point.
While you’re down there collecting Lightroots, you’ll find that the enemies down there do Gloom damage, which makes your heart containers unrecoverable, making you more fragile with every hit you take. Thankfully, there’s a way to get a good chunk of those hearts back with the right meal.
There are quite a few recipes that will heal your Gloom-infected heart containers, but Sunny Veggie Porridge might be the best one.
Here’s what you need to make it:
-
1x Herb (any)
-
1x Hylian Rice
-
1x Fresh Milk
-
1x Sundelion
Yes, it’s a pretty complex recipe with some ingredients that aren’t necessarily easy to come by, but it’ll make clearing the depths much more efficient. Who has the time to sit under a Lightroot while your Gloom hearts heal? Not this guy.
Hylian Tomato Pizza
This next recipe is on our list because of its superior versatility, but also, who doesn’t like pizza?!?
You’ll have to clear the Letter to Koyin quest in Hateno VIllage before you can gain access to one of the ingredients, but that doesn’t take very long.
Here’s what you’ll need for the best ‘Za in all of Hyrule:
-
1x Hateno Cheese
-
1x Hylian Tomato
-
1x Rock Salt
-
1x Tabantha Wheat
With that last ingredient slot, you can add in a variety of ingredients to add flavor to the pizza as well as helpful buffs. Throw an Endura Carrot on there for an extra stamina wheel, a Sundelion to recover some Gloom hearts, or maybe even a Big Hearty Truffles for some extra hearts!
How does Link manage to make a pizza in a cooking pot? First of all, shhhhh, don’t think about it. And secondly, it’s very, very soggy.
Mighty Steamed Mushrooms
Are those SIlver Bokoblins getting you down? Does it seem like they take forever to kill no matter what weapon you’re using? Well say goodbye to that particular struggle when you cook up some Mighty Steamed Mushrooms.
This recipe gives you the maximum attack boost you can achieve for over nine minutes, which is more than long enough to annihilate a couple of Bokoblin hideouts.
Here’s what you need to make this dish:
-
4x Razorshrooms
-
1x Mighty Thistle
These ingredients are pretty easy to come by, so cooking up this dish in bulk might be a good idea. You never know when you’re going to stumble across a mini-boss, and that extra attack comes in very handy when you’re facing down a temple boss.
