1. Guns or Treasure - Best Pirate Card Game
Our Rating: 5/5
- BGG Rating: 6.8/10
- Suggested Age: 8 years and up
Let’s start our list of the best battle card games with Guns or Treasure.
It's a fun and thrilling pirate-themed game involving a lot of strategic thinking, bold moves, and a dash of bluffing. It’s great for game nights with family and friends. In the game, players hide treasure, load their guns, and try to choose the perfect moment to attack or escape with their treasure.
The rules are straightforward, and the gameplay is fast-paced, making it an easy-to-learn game for newbies, with enough depth to keep seasoned players hooked.
Plot of the Game
In Guns or Treasure, players get to play as pirate captains trying to capture the most treasure before the game ends. But watch out! There are other captains (your opponents) out there ready to steal your loot if you’re not careful!
When building your ship, you have 2 options: Fill your ship with treasure or fill them with cannons to defeat your enemies in ship combat!
During the battle phase, you either have the option to flee with your treasure, or to decide which of your opponents ships to battle. But beware, there may be a bomb aboard which will blow up both ships!
It’s a quick game full of bluffing, trickery, and strategy. Will you become the top pirate on the seas, or go down in a blast of cannon fire? And most important, do you pick Guns or Treasure!?
How to Play It?

Each player starts with 6 cards. All cards are different ship parts: they are either treasure cards or gun cards. All the cards are designed to be placed down in the form of different ships in which you will use in combat (or to escape). Decide how you will plan your strategy, how many ships you will build, and what to put on them!
Phase 1: Ship Building
The first phase is ship building. Each player picks 3 cards from their hand and places them face down so no one can see them, except the bow of the ship (the front) is revealed face up. After placing them, players draw 3 new cards to refill their hand.
This continues until each player has played and drawn 12 cards. You can build several smaller ships or pour everything into one powerful ship, it’s up to you; how you play is all part of your strategy!
Phase 2: Marauding
Once all players have drawn their 12 cards, it’s time to battle one another.
Starting with the first player (the one who has the most treasure revealed at the bow of their ships), everyone takes their turns one at a time to decide which of their ships will attack another players’ ship. A note: on your first turn in the marauding phase, you must attack another player’s ship and cannot flee with your own treasure. After that, it’s up to you—keep attacking to try and sink more ships or play it safe and escape with the treasure you’ve already collected.
Phase 3: Scoring and Winning
Once all ships have either sunk or escaped, it’s time to count your treasure. Each player adds up the treasure cards’ value they managed to capture. The pirate with the biggest stash wins and sails away as the victor!
Why We Like It

We think that Guns or Treasure is one of the best battle card games because it mixes bluffing and battles. Players choose cards that represent guns or treasure and keeps opponents guessing which ship has powerful cannons or are hiding something valuable.
The pirate theme adds fun, but the real excitement comes from the mind games with each card. It is easy to learn but offers plenty of bluffing tension, making you think and rethink your moves until the end.
Whether you are trying to trick your opponents in attacking your ship with a bomb, or using the might of your gun cards to win combat, each turn is a fast-paced duel filled with surprises.
