Whether you plan on using Orbeez for sensory play, decoration, or just for fun, knowing the growth time will help you plan in advance. In this article, we’re covering how long it typically takes for gel balls to fully expand.
How Long Do Orbeez Take to Grow?
The answer depends on how you plan to use the Orbeez. If you plan on using them as bullets for Gel Blasters, it takes 4-6 hours to reach the standard size of 7-8mm. However, if you’re using them for fun activities, like filling a bathtub or for a party, then you should soak them overnight to get a larger size.
Keep in mind that the quality of the balls will factor into how long it takes them to grow. Some gel balls swell quickly compared to others. This is because of their manufacturing material and quality. Your best bet is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions labeled on the packet. Environmental factors, like the temperature of the water and adding solutions to it can also determine how long it takes the Orbeez to grow.
What is the Correct Ratio for Orbeez and Water?
Each standard-sized packet of water beads takes 1.5 cups of clean water. There are some packets that have different quantities, like 3 cups of water for 1 teaspoon of gel beads. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your gel beads just to make sure.
How Big Do Orbeez Grow?
Some gel balls can grow up to 100-150 times their original size after soaking them in water. If they’re kept in a large container of distilled hot water for long enough, the gel balls can grow to 14-16mm in diameter. They can’t grow past their maximum capacity. If left in water for too long, the oversaturated gel becomes fragile and it can even burst.
How Do You Make Orbeez Grow Faster?
It takes at least 3 hours for water balls to grow to their average size. The longer they soak, the bigger they get. Usually, this means waiting patiently, however, you can speed up the process by soaking them in lukewarm distilled water. Make sure they are in a large container with enough space or the gel balls with overflow as they grow.
Here are some ways to grow water beads faster.
Use Warm Water
Most things, when kept in warm water, tend to swell faster. The same goes for gel balls. The soft gel starts to expand quickly. Just make sure not to use boiling water since this may react with the material and reduce its lifespan.
Use Distilled Water
Tap water contains chemicals like chlorine which slows down the absorption process. Distilled water is free of impurities and minerals which enhances the absorption process.
Stirring the Water
Stirring helps to evenly distribute the water around the container which will help with the gel balls’ growth. It also prevents clumping.
Use a Water-Absorbing Mat
You can also grow Orbeez faster by using a water-absorbing mat or towel. Place the balls on a mat and pour water on the mat until it becomes supersaturated. The gel balls will grow evenly within a few hours.
Using a Light Source
Placing the water balls near a light source, like a lamp, or placing the container in sunlight will warm up the water and speed up the absorption process.
Use a Large Container
Last but not least, soak the Orbeez in a large container. If you use warm distilled water but don’t put them in a big enough container then the gel balls may grow faster but they won’t get that big. The more water they have, the bigger they’ll grow.
Can Salt or Sugar Make Orbeez Grow Faster?
Putting Orbeez in salt or sugar water does not make them grow faster. This can increase their size over time, but not how fast they grow. If you’re looking to grow your Orbeez fast, then avoid water containing salt or sugar.
Why Are My Orbeez Not Growing?
If your Orbeez are not growing to the average size, it possibly means that you haven’t soaked them long enough or they need better water. If you’ve noticed they’ve stopped growing, it means they have reached their full size and the water should be drained.
There are also other factors to consider, like the quality of the gel balls. If they aren’t high quality, then they might not work as well.
What Happens if You Leave Orbeez in Water?
If you leave Orbeez in water for too long then they will start to lose their color, texture, and shape, and begin deteriorating. This can lead to mold or bacteria building up around the balls. Prolonged exposure to water will eventually disintegrate the gel balls and break their structure.
Final Thoughts On Orbeez Growth Time
Orbeez are a surefire way to enhance parties and activities for both kids and adults. If you or your kids can’t wait for the gel balls to grow, then the methods above should help speed up the process. Just make sure if you’re using the balls for Gel Blasters to soak the beads for the prescribed amount of time. If they’re too big, the blaster can get jammed. You can save your Orbeez for later use by storing them properly.
