One Piece Arabasta Arc Summary & Recap
The Man with Many Faces: Mr. 2
As soon as we begin this arc we already start digging deep into the conspiracy behind the Arabasta revolts and the rebels. And how Crocodile, a Warlord of the Sea is seen as a hero in the country, even though he really is plotting to take over the kingdom.
As the Straw Hats try to catch some fish, they stumble upon an intriguing character known as Mr. 2, also known as Bon Kurei. His ability to transform into anyone he desires after only touching them once using the Mane Mane no Mi Devil Fruit power adds a new layer of excitement to the story. The Straw Hats form an unlikely bond with Mr. 2, despite realizing that he is an agent of the nefarious organization, Baroque Works.
This unexpected friendship with Bon Clay, also known Mr 2. Bon Kurei, and the humor that ensues make for some of the most entertaining moments in the Arabasta Arc. Not only this “villain” formed a bond with the crew, but he pretty much immediately became a Nakama, even though he’s still an enemy.
This encounter also allowed them to be prepared for a man of his abilities and they make some preparations just in case.
Nanohana: Gateway to Arabasta - A Journey into the Desert Kingdom
Upon reaching the desert kingdom of Arabasta, the Straw Hat Pirates find the Kingdom embroiled in a dangerous conflict between the kingdom's royal guards and a rebellion. Luckily, the legendary Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, stepped in and “saved the day”. Grateful townspeople hailed him as their hero, while news of his heroism reached King Cobra, who expressed his gratitude to Crocodile.
As our hungry captain, Luffy, ventured into town alone, he stumbled upon a bar brawl between Portgas D. Ace, a mysterious man, and Captain Smoker of the Marines. Oblivious to the chaos he caused, Luffy grabbed some meat before fleeing from Smoker's pursuit. Unfortunately, he led the Marines straight to his crewmates, who were innocently stocking up on supplies. Just when it seemed all was lost, Ace came to their rescue, creating a diversion and securing their escape.
After barely making it out alive and free and back in the Going Merry Go, Luffy tells his crew that the man who saved them was actually his brother. It was then that Ace jumped into the ship and met Luffy’s crew. But their meeting wasn’t too long, as Ace had to leave them there after delivering a message to Luffy and going off to burn some Baroque Works ships with the power of his Devil Fruit, the Mera Mera no Mi.
*Note that this Ace parts ways on this point in the manga, but in the anime Ace stays with them for a while longer. And they even added some episodes where e gets to travel with them across the desert of Arabasta, giving this character some well-deserved screen time which is great since Ace is a fan-favorite character.
Although their reunion was brief, Ace left Luffy with a cryptic message before departing in a blaze of glory, obliterating multiple Baroque Works ships. Meanwhile, Princess Vivi urgently dispatched a warning message to Alubarna to alert King Cobra of the impending danger.
Unveiling Arabasta's Secrets: The Straw Hats' Desert Adventures
Embarking on a treacherous journey through the scorching desert of Arabasta, the Straw Hat Pirates encounter a peculiar group of Kung-Fu Dugongs, who quickly become their unexpected allies. Overcoming the dugongs' challenge, the crew continues their exploration, reaching the desolate ruins of Erumalu, once a flourishing city now devastated by relentless sands.
As they traverse the arid landscape, the Straw Hats face a cunning threat from Warusagi Birds, cunning tricksters that pilfer their supplies. In a dramatic turn of events, Luffy chases down the thieves and returns with a camel named Matsuge, joining the crew with a penchant for perversion. Nami and Vivi, exclusively, enjoy the luxury of riding on Matsuge's back.
Meanwhile, deep within the shadows, the nefarious Baroque Works Officer Agents assemble at the Spiders Cafe, preparing for their final mission under the guidance of their enigmatic leader, Crocodile. Simultaneously, the Straw Hats arrive at the Yuba Oasis, where they reunite with Vivi's old friend Toto, uncovering the rebels' new hideout and a crucial piece of their shared past.
However, a pivotal moment unfolds as Luffy urges Vivi to reconsider their course of action, recognizing that their fight against the rebels alone won't put an end to the looming war. King Cobra receives Vivi's letter, exposing Crocodile's true intentions, and makes a decision that will shape the destiny of Arabasta.
Sand, Struggles, and Surprises: Rainbase and Crocodile’s plan
In the scorching desert kingdom of Arabasta, the Straw Hat Pirates arrive in Rainbase, seeking respite and supplies. However, their thirst for water leads to an unexpected encounter with the formidable Captain Smoker and Tashigi at a local bar. Startled, Luffy and Usopp accidentally set off a wild chase through the town. The Marines and the attention of the Baroque Works Billions are drawn into the fray, causing the crew to split into groups to navigate the ensuing chaos.
Meanwhile, Vivi, the princess of Arabasta, finds herself surrounded by Baroque Works agents known as the Billions. However, she is saved by Pell, a loyal guard of the king, who had flown to Rainbase after Karoo's arrival to gather intelligence. Unfortunately, Pell's valiant effort is thwarted when Miss All-Sunday defeats him, capturing Vivi and taking her to the basement of Rain Dinners. There, Crocodile, the sinister mastermind behind the plot to overthrow Arabasta, reveals his nefarious plan to Vivi.
In Alubarna, the capital city of Arabasta, the situation worsens as Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas kidnap King Nefertari Cobra. To cover up their tracks, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei disguises himself as the king, alongside a group of fake soldiers.
The impostor "king" confesses to using Dance Powder to manipulate the rain, ordering the destruction of Nanohana, the town that witnessed the powder's transportation. Amidst the chaos, Koza, a passionate rebel leader, confronts the imposter and pays a heavy price.
Back in Rainbase, the Straw Hats devise a daring plan to outwit Crocodile. Sanji, masquerading as "Mr. Prince," tricks Crocodile into leaving Rain Dinners, creating an opportunity for Chopper to act as a decoy. Utilizing their unique abilities, the crew manages to escape their Seastone cage and flee underwater, with Chopper guiding them using the Moving Crab named Hasami.
As they make their getaway, Luffy confronts Crocodile in a fierce battle. However, the power of Crocodile's Suna Suna no Mi allows him to turn into sand, rendering Luffy's attacks ineffective. Luffy's tenacity and resourcefulness are tested as Crocodile unleashes devastating sandstorms and inflicts grave injuries.
Left to die in quicksand, Luffy is miraculously rescued by Miss All-Sunday, who entrusts his safety to Pell, emphasizing the importance of Luffy's role in bringing Vivi back unharmed.
Alubarna Unleashed - The Battle for Arabasta's Destiny!
At Alubarna, after encountering a formidable obstacle: the treacherous Sandora River infested with vicious creatures. Determined to forge ahead, they face the daunting challenge head-on, only to be saved by the enigmatic Kung-Fu Dugongs and the lightning-fast Super Spot-Billed Ducks, the true heroes of Arabasta.
Meanwhile, the Rebel Army, led by the valiant Koza, launches a daring assault on Alubarna, forcing the city's evacuation. Chaka, the noble leader of the royal army, prepares to defend the capital against the rebel onslaught. Outside the city, the officer agents of Baroque Works lie in wait, hoping to capture the elusive Princess Vivi. However, their plans are thrown into disarray when a group of hooded strangers on Super Spot-Billed Ducks appear, triggering a chaotic pursuit to identify the true Vivi.
Amidst the chaos, Vivi takes a bold risk, concealing herself behind a rock, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Her resilience is tested when a Baroque Works agent creates a dust cloud, obscuring her presence from the Rebel Army. In a stroke of luck, Karoo, her loyal companion, shields her from harm.
As Vivi awakens, she is soon chased by Mr. 2, with Karoo's help, Vivi races towards the towering walls of Alubarna, pursued relentlessly by Mr. 2, while Sanji valiantly buys her precious time.
Prepare for an adrenaline-fueled spectacle as each member of the Straw Hat crew faces their own life-or-death battles. Chopper and Usopp confront the fearsome duo of Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas, employing their wits and teamwork to turn the tables on their adversaries. Sanji engages in a hilarious yet brutal martial arts clash with the shapeshifting Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, eventually deciphering his weakness to emerge victorious.
Nami showcases her newfound strength and resourcefulness as she engages in her first solo fight, utilizing the Clima-Tact and her meteorological prowess to triumph over the deadly Miss Doublefinger.
But the most awe-inspiring showdown unfolds as the indomitable swordsman Zoro faces off against the formidable Mr. 1. Pushing past his own limits, Zoro confronts his longstanding struggle of cutting steel, channeling his unwavering resolve to overcome his greatest obstacle and claim victory.
As the battles rage on, Vivi reaches the palace and makes a fateful decision, ordering the Royal Army to detonate the palace as a desperate attempt to draw everyone's attention. However, her plan is thwarted by the cunning Crocodile, the enigmatic mastermind behind the chaos.
With the fate of Arabasta hanging in the balance, the true depths of Crocodile's sinister intentions are revealed. His ruthless pursuit of the ancient weapon Pluton sends shockwaves through the land, as the Royal Army and the Rebel Army clash in a fierce battle on the palace plaza.
In the midst of the chaos, a startling betrayal takes place, plunging the city into further turmoil. Koza, once a beacon of hope for the rebels, finds himself caught in a web of deception and is tragically shot down, igniting a powder keg of emotions. With the battle escalating, Vivi watches in horror, her pleas for peace drowned out by the cacophony of war. But just when all seems lost, an unexpected savior arrives.
Luffy, the indomitable captain of the Straw Hat crew, confronts his nemesis Crocodile, despite being poisoned and weakened. In an awe-inspiring clash of wills, Luffy unleashes his true power, pushing himself to the limits to deliver a devastating blow that sends Crocodile soaring through the sky, defeated at last. The rains pour down, symbolizing the end of Crocodile's reign of terror, as Vivi's impassioned pleas finally reach the hearts of the warring factions.
As the dust settles and Alubarna emerges from the darkness, a newfound peace descends upon Arabasta. The Straw Hat crew, hailed as the saviors of the kingdom, stand alongside their courageous allies, celebrating their hard-fought victory. But as the sun rises on a new day, mysteries still linger. During their well-deserved rest, Luffy awakens with an insatiable hunger, reminding everyone that his appetite knows no bounds. In the midst of their celebration, an unexpected ally emerges: Bon Kurei, who valiantly protected their ship from the clutches of the Marines. As the crew sails away, their hearts heavy yet brimming with anticipation, an unexpected twist awaits them.
