The Straw Hats' encounter with Thriller Bark unfolds as a chilling adventure in a haunted realm. On this eerie island, Luffy's crew stumbles upon the bizarre ship where shadows come to life and nightmares take form.
Against the backdrop of darkness, the team challenges the macabre ambitions of one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and his zombie army to save their captured shadows. This battle pits the Straw Hats against the supernatural control of the Shadow-Shadow Fruit in a fight for their very souls. On the line - their freedom, the return of their shadows, and the fulfillment of a decades-old promise.

Into the Florian Triangle
The Straw Hats sailed into the mysterious Florian Triangle, a section of sea infamous for swallowing ships in its perpetual fog. Their journey took an unexpected turn when a massive ghost ship emerged from the mist, followed by an even more surprising visitor – a singing skeleton in formal attire who bounded aboard their ship.
The skeleton introduced himself as "Dead Bones" Brook, shocking the crew not just with his existence, but with his odd “manners” and bizarre personality. His appearance marked their first truly supernatural encounter since entering the Grand Line.
The Mystery of Brook
Brook revealed himself as a Devil Fruit user whose Revive-Revive powers granted him a second life, though his body had decayed to bones before he could return to it. Despite his ghastly appearance, he quickly charmed several crew members with his musicianship and gentlemanly ways.
Their meeting was cut short when Brook frantically departed upon spotting a shadowy island in the distance, warning them of grave danger ahead. His sudden shift from jovial to fearful hinted at darker threats lurking in the fog.
Welcome to Thriller Bark
The Straw Hats soon discovered the source of Brook's fear – Thriller Bark, the world's largest ship disguised as a floating island. Its gothic architecture and perpetual night created an atmosphere of dread, complemented by wandering zombies and nightmarish creatures.
Franky unveiled the Mini Merry, which they used to venture into the mysterious castle. Their exploration quickly turned dangerous when Nami, Usopp, and Chopper were attacked by an invisible creature, while Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji vanished without a trace. The crew found themselves separated and facing unknown horrors in this haunted kingdom.
The Mysterious Master
Behind Thriller Bark's horrors lurked Gecko Moria, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. This shadow-controlling pirate commanded an army of zombies animated by stolen shadows. He’s aided by the brilliant but deranged Dr. Hogback and the ghost princess Perona, whose negative hollows could drain anyone's will to live.
The crew soon learned the terrible truth – victims whose shadows were stolen would disintegrate in sunlight, trapping them forever in the foggy seas. More pressingly, they discovered Moria had stolen Luffy's shadow, implanting it in a giant zombie named Oars.
Oars, The Nightmare
Moria's masterpiece, Oars, possessed Luffy's strength and powers but none of his (minimal) restraint. The massive creature rampaged through Thriller Bark, destroying everything in its path while mimicking Luffy's attacks on a terrifying scale. The situation worsened when Moria himself entered Oars' body, combining their powers into a seemingly unstoppable force.
The Straw Hats coordinated their attacks with unprecedented teamwork. Franky and Usopp created traps while Robin and Sanji maneuvered the giant into position. Chopper analyzed its weaknesses as Nami summoned thunderbolts to strike it. Zoro delivered punishing sword strikes, yet their combined assault barely slowed the behemoth.
Brook's revelation that zombies could be purified with salt proved crucial as they fought to recover their shadows before sunrise. In a desperate gambit, they managed to force-feed salt to Oars while Luffy, powered by one hundred shadows himself, battled Moria. The fight reached its climax as dawn approached, with Luffy unleashing devastating attacks that finally defeated both Oars and Moria, releasing all stolen shadows just as the sun began to rise.
Kuma Arrives, and NOTHING Happens
Victory celebrations were cut short by the arrival of another Warlord—Bartholomew Kuma, whose mission was to eliminate all witnesses to Moria's defeat. Despite their exhaustion, the Straw Hats stood ready to fight again, but Zoro proposed a desperate solution – offering to take all of Luffy's accumulated pain and fatigue into his own body in exchange for Kuma sparing the crew.
In one of the arc's most powerful moments, Zoro endured unimaginable agony as Kuma transferred all of Luffy's damage into him. Sanji had attempted to take Zoro's place but was knocked unconscious. The stoic swordsman remained standing throughout the ordeal, his loyalty manifesting as a test of endurance that nearly claimed his life.
Victory Feast and Forward With A DON
Brook finally revealed his deepest pain – a promise made to his former crew's whale companion, Laboon, that they would return to him. That promise, and his lonely decades guarding his crew's final song recording for Laboon, moved the Straw Hats deeply. Luffy reveals they’ve met the lovely island whale before, and promises he’ll help Brook reach his old pal. Luffy renewed his invitation for Brook to join, bringing the skeleton's musical talents and swordsmanship to the crew while moving one step closer to reuniting with Laboon.
The arc concluded with a massive celebration, the crew's trademark response to surviving deadly battles. They gained not just a new crew member in Brook, but deeper bonds forged through facing supernatural horrors together. Zoro's sacrifice, though unknown to most of the crew, demonstrated the profound loyalty binding these pirates together. As they sailed away from the nightmarish island-ship, their journey continued with new songs, stronger bonds, and ever-greater adventures on the horizon.
Thriller Bark | Story Impact
Thriller Bark plants crucial seeds that grow into major plot developments. Beyond defeating Moria, the fifth Warlord of the Sea, the arc introduces key elements that reshape the story's landscape.
Moria's backstory exposes the harsh reality of the New World. His devastating defeat by Kaido and the loss of his entire crew drove him to create a zombie army, showing how failure can warp even powerful pirates. This revelation adds weight to the challenges awaiting in the New World seas.
The arc scatters several vital elements across its story. Luffy gains Captain John's treasure bracelet, adding another adventure thread to follow. Zoro claims the legendary sword Shusui from Ryuma, connecting him to the distant land of Wano. These acquisitions prove more significant than mere souvenirs.
Lola's alliance yields crucial knowledge about Vivre Cards - the mysterious papers that point to their owner. This explains the paper Ace gave Luffy in Alabasta. Worryingly, Ace's Vivre Card has begun to burn, though Luffy maintains faith in his brother's strength rather than rushing to his aid.
The battles against Oars and Kuma force the Straw Hats to confront their limitations and reinforce the loyalty and strength of the crew working together. Moria's warning about losing crew members in future seas lands heavily after their near-defeat. The crew emerges victorious but aware they must grow stronger for the challenges ahead. New tools, allies, and warnings combine to drive the story toward its next phase.
Thriller Bark | Review
Animation and Visuals | 10/10
Thriller Bark brings an entirely unique visual style to One Piece with its horror-themed elements. The perpetual night, gothic architecture, and eerie fog create an atmosphere unlike anything we've seen before in the series. The character designs for this arc are particularly impressive - from the nightmarish zombies to Perona's gothic lolita aesthetic that perfectly matches her character.
The fight scenes maintain their usual dynamic energy while incorporating supernatural elements. There’s also a lot of great use of cinematography to add an amazing mix of visual comedy and horror. The Straw Hats versus Oars battle showcases excellent choreography, especially when displaying the crew's coordinated attacks. The "Nothing Happened" scene with Zoro stands as one of the most visually striking moments in the series, with the stark silhouette of our stoic swordsman perfectly capturing the weight of his sacrifice.
Character Development | 10/10
The character development in this arc is simply incredible. This is one of the arcs that always makes me cry. Brook's tragic backstory with Laboon absolutely destroyed me. The revelation of his decades-long loyalty to a promise made to a whale friend brings tears to my eyes every time. The way his gentlemanly demeanor masks such deep pain adds layers to his character that make him instantly memorable.
It’s amazing to see how Oda-sensei connected the dots, it’s pretty much as if he’s always leaving small breadcrumbs in the way for us to find the way. It’s also something to look forward to in keeping up promises, which is usually a central piece of the One Piece story.
I absolutely love how they handled Perona's character. Her ghost powers and gothic princess attitude make her both threatening and entertaining, proving to be one of the most unique antagonists we've seen. Not to mention giving Usopp a chance to shine in an extremely Usopp-like fashion.
The crew balances out really well with the newest member, Franky. His childish sense of humor is a perfect fit for some of the more immature crewmates. It’s one of those arcs where Luffy does not take center stage, and that’s an amazing feat of balancing the storytelling and development of different characters. The crew's interactions while facing supernatural threats showcase their growing trust and coordination, especially during the Oars fight.
We can’t leave out the introduction of Kuma as a character. Even though he’s appeared before, it’s the first time he really interacts with anyone and it’s really intriguing. One Piece has a way of making the characters deep and interesting, no matter how they look. Gecko Moria is one of the most overlooked ones in this sense. With a tragic backstory and quite an ugly personality, he’s still deep and somewhat understandable. It’s the representation of being stuck in fear and crushed dreams.
And there are just no words to express how I feel about Zoro’s interaction with Kuma. That’s just perfect.
Sound and Music | 10/10
The atmospheric sound design in Thriller Bark deserves special praise. From the eerie ambient noises to Brook's violin playing "Binks' Sake," the audio elements enhance the horror-comedy balance perfectly. The sound effects during the zombie encounters and battles add that extra layer of both spookiness and humor that makes this arc special.
The impact sounds during the Kuma confrontation, particularly during the "Nothing Happened" scene, demonstrate masterful restraint - letting the visual weight of the moment speak for itself. This arc knows exactly when to use sound and when silence serves the story better.
Thriller Bark makes for an amazing use of the soundtrack to create atmosphere, but the overarching melody of Binks’ Sake is what takes the cake. This hits especially hard with the final montage of the Binks’ Sake recording. Brook was a member of the Rumbar Pirates, and as such he is a lifelong musician, music is an essential part of his life… or death YOHOHOHOO.
Reception and Impact | 8/10
This arc marks a brilliant departure from One Piece's usual tone while staying true to its core themes of friendship and sacrifice. The balance between horror elements, classic One Piece humor, and serious character moments works surprisingly well. Zoro's sacrifice scene has become one of the most iconic moments in the entire series, showing just how far these pirates will go for each other.
Thriller Bark has some crazy impactful scenes, with some of the saddest and most heartwarming moments too. Even though the reception is sometimes mixed due to the strange change of style, I think it delivered a masterclass in storytelling. This arc also has some of the biggest threats faced by the Straw Hats.
Kuma's introduction as an overwhelmingly powerful figure raises the stakes dramatically. It shows us that, even after defeating a Warlord like Moria, there are still monsters out there far beyond our crew's current capabilities. This arc perfectly sets up future challenges while telling a compelling story of its own.
Wrap Up | 9.5/10
Thriller Bark holds a special place in my heart for how it manages to be both terrifying and heartwarming. The way it weaves together horror elements with One Piece's signature humor creates something truly unique in the series. Brook's story with Laboon still makes me emotional, and I can't help but smile at how perfectly Perona, Moria, and Lola were handled.
The "Nothing Happened" moment with Zoro stands as one of the most powerful scenes in all of One Piece, showcasing the depths of loyalty within the crew without needing any flashy effects or lengthy explanations. This arc proves that One Piece can successfully venture into different genres while maintaining its core identity.
From the crew dynamics to the perfect balance of horror, comedy, and action, Thriller Bark delivers a compelling adventure that expands what we thought possible in the One Piece world. While it might not reach the emotional heights of Enies Lobby, it creates its own unique space in the series that no other arc can replicate.
I have to admit that at some points during the arc, I did find it to be a bit strange (Absalom, in particular) and weirdly paced. However, any fault the arc/saga might have is completely excused by such a strong closing. No matter how many times you watch these scenes, they’ll get to your heart. The value of a promise, the true meaning of loyalty, friendship, and hope in the future. It all shines straight through the darkness of the Florian Triangle.
